Literally like why ban porn though? In what way shape or form does it benefit anyone to get rid of porn? This is dumber than the war on drugs, but at least there is a logical reason to want to take down drugs, porn literally hurts nobody.

People are distorting reality a bit here. The bill mentioned by the OP is not related to porn. There is another bill called the Digital Economy bill which wants to restrict online porn (including age verification and banning certain types), but that bill still has some way to go (it hasn't reached the House of Lords yet).

There's two main reasons the government can get away with this kind of stuff
1) The second largest party (Labour) are also quite authoritarian and a very weak opposition, generally supporting this kind of bill.
2) The general public in the UK are too trusting of the government and security services compared to other countries. In fact there is evidence that the public support the Investigatory Powers bill.

this. the investigatory powers act requires all ISPs to keep a browsing history of users which can be accessed by a shit load of alphabet agencies (like the Food Standards Agency???). but don't worry, if you're not doing anything wrong then you've got nothing to hide :)

a year or two ago the government mandated all major ISPs to implement an opt-in porn filter, and also banned certain types of porn from being produced in the UK (mainly stuff like BDSM). now that's being ramped up to ban more types and force sites to use strict age-verification (btw, this bill also includes pro-consumer stuff like making a minimum internet speed a legal right)

in general what we're seeing is the government trying to turn the uk into a surveillance state bit by bit. it's easy to pass small amounts of surveillance or blocking (save the children/fight the cyber etc) bit by bit, but once the infrastructure to do this is in place they can fairly easily extend it to cover more material and more data. and i guarantee that's what we'll continue seeing over the next few years unless the opposition actually step up.
