Hello I am looking for some really comfortable headphones + mod mic or a headset that I can game with for hours with crisp sound. I have a decently big head, so not to small of a fit. My old headset was a SteelSeries Siberia v2 Black/Gold, which is in leather, and that one I did not enjoy to much. It got way to hot from the leather and sweaty after long gaming sessions, so I would prefer cloth insides I think. And I would like to invest in the headset so I can use it for at least 3-5 years or so. So crisp 7.1 sound would be preferable with a budget on around max 230€.

Personally, I don't know a specific headset with that sound and audio, but it sounds to me like you should consider getting a separate headset and microphone combination if you possess that sort of budget.

You could look at senheiser's game line maybe or their other headphones with a mod mic. kingston is also pretty clean sound and decent mic. That is just my 2 cents. My best suggestion is for you to just do some research.

They aren't 7.1, but the HD 598 is great. I also think you can get a soundcard that supports virtual surround sound but I don't know much about that or how it works.

Beyerdynamic DT 990
Get the32 ohm ones if you can not afford a amp.
Surround sound and "gaming" headphones are a meme. Don't bother with them.
Sennheiser makes cheap plastic garbage. They are slowly becoming the new Bose. Avoid.

7.1 headphones don't exist. It's just bullshit software. You can't physically fit a subwoofer, a driver in front of you and a driver behind you inside an earcup that is to your left or right.

I'm fairly sure that the HD 598 didn't suddenly become worse, unless you know something I don't.

Ya setsul has a good point but if you want 7.1 then go for it. I mean I use stereo mode on my kingston cloud II and I can hear lot's of details in-game fine. Also ScrewB you do realize that A LOT of headphones and headsets are made out of plastic any way right?

Major structural components should not be made of plastic. Sennheiser headphones are known to have issues with cracking plastic.. My own Sennheiser headphones were probably my shortest lived 100+ $ headphones due to this issue.

Its a known issue. Don't try to pretend it isn't.
This isn't to say they are bad headphones. Just less rugged than other options.

DT 990s, 880s, 770s are built like a tank. In this price range i suggest them over anything else. Also comfy AF.

Alright so at the moment I have these 4 headphones in mind:

  • Audio Technica ATH-M50x + ModMic
  • Beyerdynamic DT 990 + ModMic
  • Astro Gaming A40 + MixAmp Pro
  • Sennheiser PC 373D

Which of these headphones do you think will be the best buy for me?

990s are the best headphones out of all those you listed, just be sure to get the 32 ohm version like people mentioned before

on this note, what external cards/boxes/whatever are good for virtualising this kind of thing?

The Beyerdynamics are by far the best ones there. If you want higher than 32ohm you are going to need a amp.

Also note that when it comes to Beyerdynamic higher model # does not = better headphones.

DT 770 = closed back = better sound isolation and warmer bass
DT 990 = open back = less isolation and more accurate sound stage
DT 880 = semi open = a little of both worlds

I got a pair of DT 770 pro 250 ohms and i am HIGHLY satisfied with them.

They are called computers. They compute things.

Any soundcard will offer you some shitty virtual 7.1 mode.
It's highly irrelevant because 99% of the time your source will be stereo, not 7.1.
The only thing you can do is crossfeed, which is so easy that most music players offer it as a plugin.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sennheiser-HD-380-Pro-Collapsible/dp/B001UE6I0G

Will recommend these incessantly. I've heavily heavily used a pair for 4 years and they still work fantastic. No "plastic cracks" as people are complaining here. Excellent flat frequency response. No gaming or big bass gimmicks, these are just designed for ACCURATE presentation of sound, intended for monitoring purposes.

Through my continuous recommendation, two friends have bought them for their own upgrades over the years and they still thank me, as they've been very very pleased! Skim through the amazon reviews too if you're unsure. Good for literally everything that plays audio (games, music, etc etc), because they're remarkably precise! No wonky scoops and boosts across the frequency spectrum as so many (even expensive "good" headphones) have.

Major downside for you is no cloth insides, they're a more matte leather material.
