Where to start playing 6v6 TF2 in EU?

Hello,

I am interested in competitive TF2 for some time now, I watch matches, streams and lurk on TFTV, but I've yet to play competitive 6v6 myself (besides Valve matchmaking, but I think that doesn't really count). I played HL match once as Heavy, but didn't like it because of spam, chaos and slow paced gameplay.

Where to start playing 6v6 in EU, should I try lobbies, pugs, look for open team or maybe FaceIT?

If you're looking to just purely pug then I would recommend https://eu.pug.champ.gg/

Then on top of that if you want to find and play on a team you can play at https://etf2l.org

I'd recommend doing a few pugchamps to get yourself comfortable, find a 6s specific class that interests and to then start learning to fundamentals of the gamemode. Don't be afraid to ask people for advice.

Read up about the gamemode first, watch vods of prem matches to get an idea whats going on. Then start practicing on dm, lobbies, pugs etc. The more you play, the more you learn.

Honestly, you'll want to start in a lower skilled environment than pugchamp. You should try tf2center. It has a bad rep because of some idiotic things the admins do from time to time but it's still a fully functional 6s lobby site with an active and fairly large community.

You'll want to play mumble required lobbies (because 6s is aids without comms)

Also, if you're new, lobby hosts will sometimes kick you and not give you a chance. That's why the best way to go about it is to host a mumble required lobby yourself. You can do this by renting a free server on www.serveme.tf

If you need any help getting started on tf2 center, or getting a server/hosting a lobby feel free to add me on steam

Its a shame we don't have newbie mixes anymore. It gave brand new players some structure and you played with people who were in the same boat as you. I used to run a lot of theses some years ago and we used to have teams formed from the mixes which was really good for the scene.

If you want my advice i would say this:

EDIT: If i was to start playing TF2 fresh in the scene i would try to actively find a team in open as quickly as possible. When you get some league experience under your belt it gives you an idea of what is needed from you to be a good player. Watch demos or stv's of the best players. Consume as much 6v6 TF2 as you can. Unlike when i started there is a huge amount of resources for you to help you improve. Its all been linked on this thread.

Tf2 center is basically pure trash tf2 and I would avoid it at all costs. It has a really awful player base of some of the most toxic players I've ever met in TF2.(and that's impressive in this community) and new players will just get slammed by stacks or shitalked by their own team.

Face it is slightly better but still not ideal for new players. Every time I play face it I am put on a team with Russians who cant communicate in English or don't say anything at all. People give up after a round loss throw or just troll the entire game. Sure you might get a good game with communication every now and again but it is rare. It was potential to be amazing. But ironically because of the low player count in matchmaking the worse off it is. Which is why if you are going to play some semi organised TF2 you should jump in the queue. Unlike TF2 center I wouldn't avoid it like the plague.

Honestly I would play Mixchamp (if its still active) if you aren't picked on pugchamp or play Pugchamp at off peak times. They are at least organised and for the most part not toxic bad experiences.

EDIT: You should play MGE and jump maps if you plan on playing in 6v6 in my opinion. It gives you control of the game and you get used to certain mechanics which may not be apparent in pubs. All classes benefit when you grind those out.

I've been thinking about starting newbie mixes again. So if anything happens on that i'll make a post about it.

You talk shit about tf2c and yet you use it on a daily basis. I mean, you're all shitting on tf2center and not offering and viable alternatives.

Mixchamp is dead. Brand new players won't get picked on pugchamp. Faceit has no class limits, no mumble and it has stacks. Stadium is dead. Newbie mixes don't exist.

Like it or not, tf2center is the place to go if you want to play a quick game of 6s, especially if you're new. Sure, it's far from perfect, it has some toxic retards but not everyone is an absolute twat. And guess what, games don't take hours to start because it actually has a playerbase

Faceit is the better option. If you can hop on the discord and use comms its not nearly as bad as TF2 center lobbies.

My issue with pugchamp was the captain drafting system.

As there is often lots of players added but very few willing/able to be captain games do not start quickly outside of peak times. Besides captains tend to pick good/famous/people they are friends with, so when you do not know anyone and have no experience you have little chances to get picked.

tf2center and faceit are ok for starting
personal opinions aside, they are your only options if you're fresh outta pubville, unless if you manage to find newbie mixes

play tf2center/faceit (and don't get discouraged if you do shit which you and everyone else was at some point) and watch a few videos to try understand the basics of 6s flow

pugchamp is a bad idea unless you're experienced, mixchamp is dead

when you can try to sub/merc for a team to get an idea of more serious play, make some friends, join dmixes, play a season when you can with people your skill level

gemmmake some friends

Best advice that you can get tbh. Socializing is just as important here as it is IRL. Be talkative, most people you'll meet are friendly. Form a circle of friends that you can draw on when you want to play doublemixes or when you're looking for a team (or building one, as a matter of fact).

The best way to play tf2 is while being in mumble with a bunch of retards that you like hanging out with

I have a friend who got permbanned by an admin for medic trolling in this game: http://logs.tf/1624316#76561198028444359

of course the fact that the admin was on the losing would totally not influence his ability to judge objectively.

I hate people scaring away new people in lobbies and the tf2c admins permbanning all my decent friends. no wonder the size of users is dropping so dramatically if it becomes a place neither for the really bad or good, only room for the ugly.

I hate playing devil's advocate for tf2center but blatantly lying, slandering and greatly over exaggerating how bad it is isn't the right way to go about it.

So he didn't get permabanned for trolling on med. He got a 12h ban for that

He got permabanned for harassing the admin afterwards. Not even a permaban, just an indefinite ban until he apologizes.

I do, however, agree that their rules can be bs sometimes - you cant rep a demo for playing demoknight because "you cant rep a player if you dont like their gameplay" they dont see that as trolling, but unorthodox heals as a med counts as trolling and not as "not liking the player's gameplay"

Still, your friend could have just sat out the half a day ban instead of antagonizing the admin
