Thoughts?
I love the comment that said that Light is going be too emo and his motivation is to avenge the world instead of anime's pride and his own views on the world order and L looks too rebelious for an antisocial mastermind aka has his own views on the world order so roles are swapped?

Meanwhile Del Toro can't get funding for a tv drama of Naoki Urasawa's Monster. There are a bunch of other manga that would make far better tv series but they went with Death Note because "muh popularity"

Why not? Homer's Odyssey has been played and shot for centuries, why not this?
The question in art is not "what", but "how".
New writers if good can probably say something new through the lens of this decade's flow. Also Del Toro's funding might as well coexist with this.

Because i feel that there are literally other manga that would translate to live action better. Stories that can be just as gripping but with more emphasis on the development of its characters, which is what live action does better than animation, amd less emphasis on supernatural elements, which is what animation does better imo.
The aforementioned Monster is the perfect example. It is a crime drama with an incredibly high quality of writing, with a similar killer/detective dynamic. But it was written to appeal to an older, more mature audience than death note was.
I'm not saying that death note can't be good as a series, just that I think there are better options.

Light is not supposed to look like a "troublemaker". He is suppose to look like a smart perfect kid that is first in his class so no one would expect him to be a kira...

You mean the animated series? Because i don't read manga. And i am kind of a retrofag nowadays and can't take most of millenium's art style like this Mad House studio.

and they have Japanese names because the show was made with a Japanese audience in mind for instance L (Eru Rōraito) and watari have Japanese names despite being from europe

if you talk to people in japan, they don't see those characters as being white a majority of the time fyi, that's just western perception
western population is drawn totally different in a lot of series compared to major characters like samurai champloo, yakitate!! japan, eyeshield 21, steins;gate, etc..
there are europeans in death note most notably the protagonists from the second arc
i don't have really high hopes for this series, but probably will watch it anyways when it's released just for willem dafoe ryuk
tbh i'm surprised they didn't try really hard to try to get zac efron, his high school musical look was pretty much a spot on light lmao

I kind of wish they explored other possibilities instead of taking the existing characters and placing it in the US. Like, a completely new character was presented with the Notebook and how their reaction to it would be, and how it would play out compared to the narrative in the original series.
Other than that I am excited to see Willem Dafoe as Ryuk.

for the most part, characters in anime generally don't look like people you would naturally find irl (for the most part) in the first place
a lot of shows have characters with naturally dark blue/white/crimson red/green hair or incredibly unnatural physical traits
like you could argue that the physical characteristics of characters in shows aren't inherently japanese, but you could also say they don't necessarily resemble anyone irl as well, there's so many shows that have blonde hair/blue eyes characters that aren't actually white
even in that interview you linked to had them saying that the characters just looked like anime characters until they got to the end of the interview where they were directly asking them about japan's perception on whitewashing from a western standpoint
you could also debate about the characters not looking japanese because of the entire harajuku fashion area lol
if you've ever actually walked around harajuku, you really wouldn't be surprised by any of the characters in anime looking the way they do
