try to get your hands on a demo from the perspective of your opponent(i.e. stv) and watch yourself through their eyes. You may be able to pick up on things you do (movement in particular) that you didn't fully realize when you see your play from the other team's perspective.

When trying to protect your Medic from a bomb/suicide/any form of aggression, always try to physically stay between the attacker and your Medic; even with shotguns, you can block a lot of the damage just by not allowing a line of sight.

Prefer walls over the ground when rocket-jumping, unless you want to go straight up. It will give you more speed (and consequently reach). Be aware of the extra damage.

Don't hug walls, your shadow may be seen if opponents have non blobby shadows turned on (corollary: enable non blobby shadows yourself by setting r_shadowrendertotexture to 1).

Turn off the music: every sound in TF2 is useful information.

Useful to me, YMMV: You can stop the main menu song with "sv_cheats 1; stopsound; sv_cheats 0".

scout things to remember

don't chase kills
especially towards healthpacks
they will be running away so probably reloading instead of returning fire
if they don't die and reach health
you are out of ammo / they've reloaded
probably away from your team / near theirs
you have sacrificed positioning to get likely an unimportant frag

don't run towards enemy while reloading! do it in your own team's territory

don't chase sequential frags when you are hurt and need to reload
get back to your medic and safe positioning to solidify the man advantage, then push as a team

call medic as early as possible. anticipate receipt of damage (ie when faced with a forced 1v1) rather than responding to it.

practice accurate 180s & 360s more! don't run around simply looking straight forward, continually check your surroundings.

avoid running directly to the medic when weak as the combo is likely to be receiving spam that can easily finish you off.

What separates Open teams from IM teams are the number and type of small advantages that you move on, how quickly you move on them (reaction time as a team), and focus fire in team fights. IM teams play like teams, and Open teams get away with a lot of individual plays.

the only numbers that matter are the rounds.

do not play for your own personal stats. if you arent getting that many frags, but your team is winning, everything is fine. if you go for kills to try and pad stats to impress your team or save face or whatever, you will most likely get killed more and give the other team advantages. fuck your personal score as long as your team is winning the game.

- don't let banny die.
- when you're being chased as a medic, attempt to lead your needles when laying down fire.
Trying to predict how your opponent will move will allow more needles to hit as the player moves towards you. The needles travel time is slower then the smg etc etc.

The best advice I ever got from a mentor was to go outside, get some sleep, eat right, find a hobby, and get a better setup. I've been playing better ever since.

Also, lower your sens.

Check for traps. It's not gonna cost you anything to look behind you for half a second before continuing into a room (except maybe your life if there was a trap there.) See a trap, call it no matter where it is, it will never do more harm then good to call a trap. If there's a way for you to get rid of the trap without dying to it, get rid of it.

A rule of thumb I've always told new demos is to try and make it so that if there's a trap, it should take at least two rockets to neutralize the trap.

i.e. on Badlands last: perhaps try to spread the stickies on the wall and along the edges of the point, so that they have to knock them down, then try and knock them away, wasting two rockets or something like that on a crucial last push, or have to sacrifice a player to get the point clear.

Don't die.

More specifically, before you do anything, think "what are the chances of me dying from doing this?", then double the chance, and then reconsider. If you're probably going to die, most of the time you probably shouldn't do that thing.

if you're already stuck might as well go balls deep and do as much damage as you can instead of dying while trying to get out. don't use this as an excuse to put yourself in a position to get stuck.

Stay positive - with any type of sport (or esport lolz), the mental game is fully involved. I've been on many teams, and nothing is more of a downer than when people start raging or calling out teammates. Hands down, the worst thing you can do during a match and will almost always make things go to the toilet. It's fine to adjust to issues and recognize problems, but don't shit on your teammates - if there is a weak link, wait until after the match to discuss it with the player in question...and better yet, discuss as a team.

don't focus too much on technical mistakes, practicing more will make those happen less anyway

I still need to work on that basic principle

If you're a medic and angry at your team, think carefully because the next few words coming out of your mouth is gonna affect your team's morale. Good or bad.

Your brain is telling you, "Huh... that place seems dangerous and could be sticky-trapped or have flanker(s)." It's probably true.

Believing completely in your teammates will enable your positive thinking in heal management and not lose motivation when you die. Although that is hard to grasp if you don't know your teammates that well. (SO ASK/TALK TO YOUR TEAMMATES YEAA!)

Oh and tell your teammates to spam the medic button if you don't know where they are plus it'll tell you if their health is bad or not. =D

Just because you're ubered doesn't mean the scout that just jumped over your head isn't a threat to your team. Especially when you have a demo following up the uber.

A lot of players try to watch their own demos and then correct their mistakes, but for most people the best way to improve is actually to watch the pros and then try to emulate them. Watching invite demos is one of the best ways to improve if you cannot scrim with your team. If you can, get a teammate or buddy to watch with you and have a discussion about what you are watching.

In other words, instead of trying to figure out what you are doing wrong, try to figure out how to do it right.

HereThereBeTygersCrouching or not crouching does not affect strafing, and neither does having your equalizer out.

This isn't true (equalizer part). Air acceleration (basically how fast you can turn without losing speed) is also effected by your player speed. Having your equalizer out at low HP (thus having speed increase) affects your air strafing, speed-wise. This makes it easier to be unpredictable.

This is annoying in BBall. Just to put it out there.
