Devs launch sequel of a game and its really different from the original: "it doesnt really feel like the original" (doom for example)

devs launch sequel and its gameplay is the same as the original: "woow they are running out of ideas is the same shit" (like halo or CoD)

(Think Counter-Strike franchise) It's easy to learn but hard to master and the skill ceiling is "infinite" due to the complexity involved with strategies/grenade usage alone, not including player's raw mechanical aim.

Then you have developers that do this for so long without making hardly any changes at all that it just feels stale. There really is a Goldilocks-Zone for how much you can/should change about a game from title to title without messing it up.

uhm I guess same things can happen to movies, like the terminator 2, it was so much better than the original, but the 3rd one was nowhere as near as good as the 2nd

The difference here is that if what you did was really successful, then you should generally give people more of what they want without trying to change too much and keep the game very relevant to its predecessors.
