Competition Idea-Introducing New Players to Comp

One of the things turning people off of competitive tf2 is a lack of knowledge concerning the competitive formats. To many pub players, watching a cast may be confusing unless the caster takes time, not commenting on the game, to explain it.

But one of the tf2 community's strongest parts is the video making community. There are tons of fantastic frag videos, compilations, and other types of videos out there.

So why don't we use on thing to fix the other? There could be a competition to make two short (4-5 mins) videos (one for Highlander and one for 6's) that would be used as a introduction to competitive tf2. This could be put in the info of streams, on popular YouTube channels, and generally broadcast as widely as possible.

Of course, this is just an idea. Thoughts?

Aren't there already several videos that do this? Shlaner makes 6's ones, I don't know about HL

I think the hardest thing about comp is actually finding a team and other people who are interested in playing with a new person.

I don't think regular pubbers watch shlaner, just the people who understand the formats but think they are too shitty to play comp tf2.

STAR_ made a couple videos on competitive gameplay but didn't go into detail, he mostly treated it as just another pub commentary; maybe if/when he makes it far in plat playoffs on GG he'll make one about competitive tf2, last time that happened he did.

Not_MatlockI think the hardest thing about comp is actually finding a team and other people who are interested in playing with a new person.

About 2 months after discovering competitive and 6s format I found team on esea.
It has more to do with the goal of the team you're joining and the level.
There are always people looking every seasons for players without much experience but a basic 6v6 knowledge.

Remember the shit-fest that went down with FT vs Chess Club? A lot of redditors were talking about issues, and one thing that I saw was that the new ones would say "this the first cast I watched..."

Well how about getting the tf.tv casters, or even the eXtv casters to low end games, and even small community tournaments, and while waiting, they could talk about the game mode's and what's involved. Have those casters post something on reddit, and we just up vote the bloody hell out of it. It'll involve more communities & even help grow a bit.

Just a suggestion though.

Could also bring this back using the tf.tv youtube, and even post articles about it. Having a main class players, b4nny for example, talk about demo. While having one main over all player talk about mids/chokes/pushes, as a team. Again, another suggestion .-.

Huh, I never actually knew these videos existed. Just added them to the playlist that all the videos I uploaded to my channel are in.

The thing about the reddit community is that a lot of the are at least remotely aware of competitive TF2 and just aren't interested. Just posting up awesome content there is the best strategy, it's just long term and not very fast. This time last year when I started posting a lot even mentioning comp tf2 would have evoked a "lol nerd" **downvote** fest. The fact total newbies are even discussing it there is a huge step.

This would be a lot better than the music and camera panning round a map that they have now.

What I had in mind would be more like a trailer (fast-paced, exciting), and would be just one video. The idea would be to give the watcher enough knowledge to watch a cast and not be confused, as well as to make it interesting enough that they want to watch more.

also guys, MGE might have gone down in a blaze of "unglory" but don't scoff at searching "my gaming edge" in youtube and seeing what's there. There was a lot of good player insight and resources on the site and CB made it all available for free once the site went down. Could be very helpful for beginners and even people looking to up there game. I rememeber the yz50 and clockwork vids really helped me see how other scouts think, and let me expand my playstyle and try new things.

I see it's not what your're looking for, babble, but a good resource to keep in mind :D

Around about i46 I was looking into doing a "6v6 in 60 seconds" thing. Got the basic concept down and even had djc do some audio work for it, but it never happened really.

My competitive POVs don't get nearly as many views compared to if I were to make more pub videos. I try to mix both of them together though. I also feel that if you're introducing competitive to new players then Reddit is a good place to go. Unfortunately I can't just go posting every single POV video to Reddit since there are all sorts of community rules and they frown upon people who post just for views.

POV videos are also really long sometimes so people just lose interest or don't have the time to watch.

Yeah, definitely. Any exposure is good, especially the type of things that people who aren't super interested in comp can be watch and learn from.

If you're actually an active member of the reddit community they really don't mind. Like I never post anything there as a mod, and I could sit and spam the sub with links constantly and people probably wouldn't mind because if you look at my history i'm still making like 3-4 posts a day in various subs.

i think a small tourney for items will bring in a lot of fresh blood. i saw on TF2OP's stream how many viewers they got just because there were raffles. if we did a similar idea with a small tournament to win like keys or hats, we could get a lot of people involved.

One of the things turning people off of competitive tf2 is a lack of knowledge concerning the competitive formats

This may be true but until there was evidence for it I wouldn't jump the gun. You need to survey pub players.

If you're serious about bringing players into comp, I wrote a script that datamined tf2lobby profiles for good players with no league experience. You could invite them to attend some kind of academy in batches of 100 a year. That is, if you were serious about it.

Here's what a TF2 "puber" has to say.
Besides the fact that I'm having issues with Mumble.
My biggest issues is How the hell do I get started? Where do I play, how do I find people to play with, considering I'm a TF2 Comp Noob (don't even know what class I'd want to play competitively)
I signed up was hoping to get into a "newbie mix" but haven't seen one since I did.

I got into comp tf2 after watching extvs top 10 plays videos. I feel like regular matches are just too long and boring for someone who doesn't know whats going on (at least they were for me), so watching "highlight reels" showed me what kind of plays were considered good and helped me understand casts much better. I feel like it would be good for someone to put together a video every week showing off the highlights of that weeks top matches, then advertise it here and on reddit and other sites. It could be like the espn of tf2.

here's an idea, what if we post a reddit thread recruiting people who have never played 6v6 for a tournament. the people have to go through a short interview to make sure they aren't total shitlords. we'd get the usual cookie cutter setup and make sure they are about equal in terms of skill. then you get 2 coaches who are relatively good and each coach gets 6 players. together they practice and scrim for a week and then at the end of the week we pit the 2 teams together, mano y mano, in a casted best of 3. maybe you can even stream some of the team's mentoring sessions. if you're feeling fancy you could throw in a prize. it would be like a real life tf2 reality show. if the the teams are fair in terms of skill and exposure to 6v6, the coaches are equally determined to win and spadez doesn't alias on one of the teams then i can see this being a really fun event. it will bring in 12 new people to comp tf2 and hopefully the exposure on reddit will be big enough to bring in a lot more people.
