The fact that the first thing that happens in the movie is Poe speaking to the commander and doing a 'uh im on hold here for general whatshisface' and then does a 'your mum' joke just annoyed me immediately.
There were way too many in-your-face slapstick and downright idiotic jokes. When Rey is 'reaching out' into the force for the first time and she literally reaches her hand out and Luke touches her with the leaf, holy shit. Chewie and the fuckin' penguin things, the caretakers on the island that were only around for comedic effect, Luke's projection brushing his shoulder after getting blasted at by the entire First Order army.
Leia using the force for the first time ever annoyed me, fucking superman bullshit, I would have been perfectly fine with that being the last scene of hers, and I think a few people expected it to be. Rose annoyed me, I felt like she was unneeded and she completely ruined Finn's heroic sacrifice scene.
Who even cares about that chrome stormtrooper? I honestly completely forgot she was even a thing until she appeared again.
The dogfights were nice, with Poe on the Dreadnaught, the Millennium Falcon and the TIE Fighters, and the scene where the ship lightspeeds through the first order ships looked amazing.
The film in general did look very good, I always like the old jedi stuff, so the temple and the old jedi books I thought were cool as shit, and the scene just before Luke dies with the two moons was so reminiscent of the Tatooine scene, I thought it was a good nod.
Can't wait to see Episode 9

pros:
- stunning visuals
- luke having actual lines
- the rey and kylo fight between snoke’s guards (or the knights of ren???)
- getting to see snoke
- all the allusions to the original trilogy
- yoda burning down a tree
- the way snoke died
- the breaking of anakin’s lightsaber to signal “letting the past die”
cons:
- snoke died WAY too quick
- general hux was a whiny baby all through the movie
- the underlying plot sucked (if the last of the resistance was aboard that cruiser then why didn’t the first order just pull ships from nearby systems and end the chase quicker???)
- kylo not seeing something was wrong after luke took fire from several first order walkers without a scratch on him
- killing leia almost then bringing her back with the force (rip carrie fisher but come on, disney already said they won’t use any special effects or double to do scenes for her in episode IX so how are they gonna kill her off???)
- absolutely criminal underuse of captain phasma’s character
- the fact the holdo didn’t just tell poe she had a backup plan

If they could get rid of all those star destroyers by just ramming a ship into it why didn't they do the same thing before but with cheaper ships and droids?

She probably had to use her access code. However they probably didn’t realize the shields were down until it was too late to look into, as they had bigger problems to deal with. And then all proof went boom.

pros:
-the performances were great, especially from Mark Hamill and Adam Driver.
- Luke Skywalker as this old jedi who just dosen't give a fuck was a nice touch (that scene where he throws the lightsaber off the cliff was gold).
-the dynamic between rey and kylo ren, looking forward to what they do with them in the next movie.
-that yoda cameo was excellent
okay parts:
-i like how snokes death was very unexpected, it sort of gives room for kylo ren to be the main villain of this saga. However it felt really disappointing, considering he didn't do anything and his backstory was never explained.
- i felt like lukes death was done really well, but i wanted more from him. was really hoping he'd have an epic duel or display some of his power rather than just create an illusion of himself.
- i liked poe dameron's arc, but why didnt laura dern's character tell him about the plan. seemed like a dumb plothole to me.
cons:
- the rose/finn side story was terrible, their relationship also seemed forced.
- captain phasma might as well not be in the movie, im prettey sure she was just there to look cool (and sell toys).
-porgs (sell even more toys)
- Rey bieng born from a bunch of random people is stupid. I know anyone can be force sensitive, but how is she so naturally powerful? Anakin was literally a child of the force, Luke was the son of the chosen one, so whats Rey's excuse?
-Leia is apparently superman.
-some of the jokes didn't work, i feel like after seeing thor ragnarok no other disney movie will be able to make me laugh.

How did the bombs in the opening sequence fall? There is no gravity in space and there was nothing that showed the bombs being forced downward by an external force. The hatches opened and they just kind of fell. I have other complaints but honestly this minor thing is what I'm hung up on. Someone who was more observant than me please explain if I missed something or if its a plot hole.

Why exactly does rey need to have special parents in order to be strong in the force? How many times have you heard of obi wans parents, yodas parents, or pretty much anyone on the council's parents? The only time parents are really mentioned as being a direct cause of strength in the force is either a). palpatine (im not actually sure if theyre the reason hes strong in the force or just the fact that plaguis specifically had palpatines parents meet for the purpose of having palpatine) or b). all of anakins kids and grandkids (cause he was pretty much created through the force)

Holy fuck the "Lightspeed collision scene" was so damn amazing. The entire cinema was just in silence. It almost felt like there was no one in the room @_@
Also that mothership scene was amazing aswell. (Dreadnought opening thing)
The death of Snoke was a bit questionable (Like already? Backstory anyone?) But still a cool death scene.
I definitely think Captain Phasma should have had a bit more screen time.
The Leia super hero part was also questionable
This was a great movie 10/10

Well, I thought it was pretty meh tbh. I'm not a huge Star Wars fan and haven't even seen all episodes, I know the base storyline though. Maybe my resume would be different if I had been biased but I really expected more from like the most awaited movie of the year.

I thought the whole movie looked incredible well. The visuals were amazing, the shots great and the special effects pretty stunning at most points. Didn't really like how Yoda or those CGI penguin birds looked like but apart from that there isn't really something visual which was bad or bothered me (except the salt planet which had a huge mountain range right next to a geometrical perfect flat ground as if it was made out of something like Minecraft bioms, that just felt odd).
I also liked the connection between Rey and Kylo even though their Facetime moments were somewhat weird and casually explained by Snoke in only one sentence. I really think they could've made far more out of this. Luke's internal conflict is good as well. Him not really sure what to do when Rey shows up was interesting.
All in all I think the storyline was pretty weak though. There wasn't really happening that much. The whole movie was basically one big long fight with some characters leaving just to come back afterwards. Some of the characters were pretty useless and unnecessary. Hackerman was literally just a random tool which suddenly appeared and then suddenly disappeared without any depth at all. Rose felt extremely forced (her sister beeing the hero at the start was cool though) and so did her "love story" with Finn whose only use in the whole movie was knowledge about tech stuff of the dark side. Chewbacca was also there I guess. Who is Phasma again? And I hate those penguin birds. They literally had no use or role besides supposedly being cute and sell as toys.
Snoke was a joke as well. I somewhat liked that there wasn't known that much about him in ep.VII to keep it somewhat mysterious who he might be. But literally nothing was added in VIII. I mean, this is supposed to be like the most powerful and evil being who's on his way to enslave the whole universe and destroy any hope and rebels (which looks quite promising at that point. But who is he? What is his past? What did he do? How did he get into that situation? You don't just randomly show up one day, get a huge army and number of evil subordinates and start to conquer the universe. Same with his death. No fight, no story, nothing. Get killed by a cheap trick and that's it. Noone even seems to care that much (except Hux maybe) He really just was a stand-in for an evil overlord without much effort and deepth put into him. Maybe you could make an extra movie about his backstory though (greetings from disney).
I think the humor was pretty annoying. It just felt like there was a forced joke every two minutes to gain chuckles from the audience. Sure, some sort of comical input might be good for some moments of relief but for me all those constant jokes made it more difficult to take the movie serious. But I mean, after Leia doing the Princess Peach floating it was hard anyway. Like seriously, what the fuck was that? Again many situations where a character is at the absolute edge of a certain death and then get's saved last second and incredibly close. It's very common in Hollywood nowadays but imo it's just annoying. It just makes it hard for me to feel the tension and importance of a dangerous scene with a main character when I know that in 95% they somehow will survive anyway no matter how hopeless the situation is.
I also think that there were so many situations which were just plain stupid and didn't make any sense. For example the first order not calling reinforcements when literally 100% of the resistance was helpless trapped in a single spaceship to really make sure they'll win the fight. Nah, just follow them for like 8 hours while firing useless shots, what could possibly go wrong? Or Holdo not telling her plan to the crew. Like seriously, why wouldn't you tell your completely desperate mates that there's still hope instead of letting them go insane, becoming distrustful and trying to desert? What's the point in keeping that strategy secret? Also, why would she need to stay on the ship? Doesn't that thing have an auto-pilot or what. It really bothered me that right after it was said that "someone needs to operate the ship" she just stands there watching out of the window doing nothing. The lightspeed kamikaze was pretty dope but how it came to the situation was just stupid. Or when they landed on this salt planet and were completely helpless and almost unarmed in that cave, why would the first order under someone with Kylo's temperament land their absolute slowest equipment not right there but like 20 miles away so that it'd take another 30 minutes to reach the cave and actually attack? Especially after playing the clock worked so well the last time when they were chasing the space ship. That's just stupid. There were more situations like that, these were the ones standing out for me though.
What bummed me the most was the lack of character development though. Except for Luke noone important really changed during the film. Sure, they had fights, they achieved something, grew stronger, learned things, struggled, had issues with themselves, almost switched sides and so on, but all in all the intentions, positions in the universe and mindsets of all main characters are basically exactly the same at the start and at the end of the film. Many unimportant people died though. They lost a lot of support, a big useless overlord was replaced and Jedis are still a thing, apart from that they're pretty much in the same situation like at the start. Kylo betraying his master was probably the most interesting part but considering the importance of that character it isn't much either. There were a lot of opportunities to really change the situation but none of those were used. Rey could have switched to the dark sides. Kylo could've switched sides as well rising against a mighty Snoke and creating mistrust in the resistance. Rose could've saved Finn which results in the mini death star gun destroying the whole rest of the resistance with only them, Luke, Chewie and Rey left. Or let Finn have his heroic death. Or at least let Leia die after being blasted into space. Or something completely different, just let something happen to get new conflicts or at least some sort of a new position. It feels like they're really afraid of letting go of old characters while at the same time introducing lots of new ones resulting in many half assed appearances of some of them. Luke returning and Rey picking up stones was pretty neat but apart from that the end is really weak imo.
This might sound really harsh, I still somewhat enjoyed it though. I just think it could've been far far better since it had all the potential and possibilities required for that.

i always thought jedi like obiwan and yoda were powerful because they trained a lot, whereas anakin was naturally gifted. i have no problem with rey bieng a naturally strong force user, but how is she able to be on par (arguably stronger) than kylo ren when she isn't a skywalker or hasn't received any training whatsoever. even anakin and luke had to train to get where they were, rey just needed three lessons about the force and then she was all good.

Alot of things that I didn't have already been mentioned, but there was something that just kind of felt off about it.
It didn't feel like a Star Wars movie but instead a more simple and dumbed down Disney movie. I definitely loved the JJ Abrams directed movies than this one with Rogue one being my favorite, but at least rumor has it Abrams is returning for 9

Enjoyed it more than The Force Awakens because this actually tried to be its own thing, but as was the same with the previous film, it lacked the charm of the originals and I have no desire to ever watch it again. As pointed out by other folks in this thread, there was a LOT of dumb shit in this film, and the end amazingly managed to be both bloated as fuck and underdeveloped.

I've heard that in the comic they released about her it shows that she only works in her own interest and only sides with the first order since they're the winning party.

was a decent film imo but would have literally been 10x better without all the forced unnecessary 'comedy' moments

Saw it last night, I thought it was much better overall than the TFA, here are my quick thoughts
Luke throwing his lightsaber over his back and walking away from Rey was not expected, I would have liked the initial meeting of Rey and Luke to have had a much more emotional feeling and a deep conversation about the state of the galaxy or somethign along those lines, instead it was turned into a joke (it was p funny thought when he threw the lightsaber) and then it went into Rey trying to convince him to help for half the movie
Rey and Ben have a force connection and are able to speak with each other through the force- they must be related, Ben lied when he said Reys parents were nobody- i think they are twins or Rey is Luke's daughter
Snokes death: Might be an unpopular opinion but I really liked the way he died and how soon it was. Snoke is arrogant, and Ben, as a skywalker, is more gifted in the force than he is (as far as i can tell with the little back story we get from Snoke) and was able to cloud Snoke's mind and trick him when he ignited Luke's lightsaber. I thought this part portrayed Ben as a much more powerful figure than we had expected if he was able to cloud his Master's judgement and not have him notice his attempts to do so. Also Snoke getting cut clean in half and his body falling to the ground was great, as well as seeing his dead body as Hok enters his chambers. I really expected Snoke to have a lightsaber fight in this movie but I'm not even disappointed, he must not have been a sith, he was most likely just an enthusiast in the dark side of the force, able to cast lightning is impressive- he must have had a trainer or master himself to be able do that- or he is just a rich and powerful guy and was able to buy ancient texts and learn it himself from books or holograms.
Luke's death: I thought this part was the best when Luke used a force illusion to fight Ben and give the rebels time to escape. Ben should have known better that it was not the real Luke when he had his old lightsaber in his hand but it had been destroyed back on Snoke's ship. I'm not sure why Luke died though, especially after he fell off the rock on the First Jedi planet and he climbed back on the rock and disappeared, it was very odd. My thoughts is he may have already been dead the whole time and Rey and chewwy were seeing and talking to Luke's ghost when they encountered him on the planet, or, after seeing Ben strike him down in anger and being so disappointed in himself and in Ben, he chose to give himself into the force and commit sudoku.
Yoda- this was great because it wasn't a CGI yoda and gave off a very nostalgic feeling
Finn and Rose and the plan to evade Snoke's ship- not a good story line, felt very useless when Rose and Finn were caught on Snoke's ship and at the end when Poe is shot by Leia (that was funny/cool) and finding out the plan was that the escape ships had cloaking devices was dumb, i would have liked to have seen Finn and Rose complete the mission and Poe's plan to light speed away without being tracked fulfilled.
Mark Hammil- best main actor, all his lines were delivered with feeling, grace and nuance
Benicio Del Toro- best side actor in the movie playing the thief, he managed to be funny without any actual jokes in his script, also great facial expressions as a junkie-thief ( i thought it was johnny knoxville the whole time until i looked after the movie)
R2D2- I would have liked to see him more, he pretty much just showed up to convince Luke to help the rebellion and then he was gone- the New Hope message was a great addition and way to convince Luke to help
Adam Driver- much better acting than in TFA, a few moments that felt awkward (when he talks to Luke during their fight, when he is talking to Rey in the elevator)- BEEF CAKE SHIRTLESS SCENE was funny
Daisy Ridley- i think she is a very good actress but suffers from the same awkward moments as Adam Driver- I think this is mostly due to poor scripting with dialogue between the two characters

I feel I missed something in the movie, because I was really dissapointed. It had amazing visuals, especially shit like the light speed collision shit. The whole story didn't really make much sense and went completely 180 on the direction TFA was going. Like 90% of the movie seemed to be dedicated to filler for random ass characters like the asian chick and half of them failed after like 45-60 minutes of dedicated screen time. What was the point, and what in the fuck are they going to do in episode 9? The main villain died in the first scene he was in, and the rest are pussies. Oh, and theres jokes everywhere. It seemed like they added all the ideas they had and didnt look at the final product to see if it was actually worth it to have any of them in there.
I liked they took a different direction instead of just copying the original trilogy again but for me they just missed the mark on so many things.

Luke milking and drinking the weird walrus anteater milk was great, gave some real life to his situation of survival on the planet. The planet "nuns" were also pretty humorous.
Unpopular opinion but Leia doing the superman punch to get back into the bridge was an ok scene. It showed that she is more than just Luke's sister, she is powerful with the force and she knows how to use it. I think they could have done a better pose than the superman though. I hope we will see more of her force powers in the next movie.
Phasma is probably dead, no one cares about her, i hope she doesnt come back in the next movie,I really wished they made her more 3 dimensional and more of a main antagonist to Finn. Just replace her with an evil villain sidekick who is actually badass.
bb8 had a lot of great and funny scenes, i didnt think he stood out enough in TFA but he was a great droid in this one
Poe's character and acting was great, i still dont see where he fits into the story line though, hes just some resisitance ace pilot- i think he needs more of a role in the main story like Han was
Things I expected or would have liked to see:
Luke use force lightning. With Luke straying away from the Jedi Order I was hoping he would have learned about the dark side of the force. Also he has green lightning in EU and it's p badass
Snoke fighting Luke, Rey, or Ben
Christian Haydensen's force ghost
My dad tricked me and said Liam Neeson was in the movie so I was expecting a Qui Gon force ghost or some sort of cameo
Alec Guiness force ghost
Luke doing some real dark shit- him turning into an anti hero
I thought Han was going to be on screen or he would be in some sort of flashback
Parting thoughts:
Star Wars has never been a serious movie series and I think people get disappointing when they add humor into scenes that are serious or when characters go on silly adventures, the original trilogy definitely doesnt have as much of the humor, but still suffers from many plot holes and years go by between the movies where you have no clue what has happened in that time. Disney is also doing a lot of things for merchandising reasons- C3PO red arm in TFA (no red arm in this movie- i dont think they ever explained why his arm was red in the first place?) the little creatures (new ewoks), Kylo Ren destroying his mask- he will probably get a new one for the next movie, new ATAT and ATST designs. All these things allow Disney to make minor changes to figures they already have and sell them again. i am still VERY disappointed that I thought Benicio Del Toro was Johnny Knoxville.
edit: far fetched but the kid at the end who was sweeping with the broom used the force to pass the broom to himself, I think he could become Reys apprentice
