Does anyone have more information on this? Was this IGN's decision or was it from the parent company's (News Corporation I think)?

rQwireDoes anyone have more information on this? Was this IGN's decision or was it from the parent company's (News Corporation I think)?

I kind of do, as I have friends that worked on IPL (David Ting and I talk every so often). I'm not sure anyone has the exact details, but from what I can tell from my contact, the IPL division is getting laid off or relocated; I think they're still figuring it out after the purchase of IGN from News Corp to Ziff Davis. I think it's likely the same team will come back with an IPL-like event, just under a different name. They're all great people that are really looking forwards to eSports established as a legitimate (and large) form of entertainment in today, and in fact, I'll probably play a part of that whenever they decide to come back. And I think they will.

You should also know that we are working on finding a new home for the IPL team and IGN will continue to broadcast partner tournaments in the future.

I feel sorry for the players who qualified. Shootmania, LoL(idc as much), and the SC2(eeehh, it's their life) but their time was wasted for like.... 2-3 months.

so then, whats the next big comp shooter.
as much as we'd like it to, i dont see tf2 ever being big, its just not getting enough support outside of the community.
and since shootmania seems to be a dud, where does that leave the state of the competitive shooter? in the hands of CS:GO entirely?

VALVE doesn't really support tournaments for CS:GO, they might help the competitive scene with updates, but that's it.

People want Reborn to be the next big thing. Sadly the ESR community likes to shit on anything new from what I can see, except Reborn. If Warsow gets greenlit, I hope it get's a bigger competitive scene. If not, then arena shooters are almost out of the question and that CS is the last PC fps game to be seen in competition until something new comes out.

Can a marketing major please tell me why Ubisoft thinks it's a good idea to artificially keep their game alive with a $100,000 opening week tournament instead of 10 $10,000 tournaments throughout the course of a year?

More money in a small period of time = faster growth of interest in a short period of time.

Not really, FPS games have one thing over mobas, not so much RTS (things can be changed easily) games. All mobas have ONE map, but many characters, once that one map becomes boring to watch, and every hits the ceiling, it'll be boring to watch. I'm not saying that this will happen within a few months, but within like... 3-5 years (tf2 might be dead then, but shooters won't be). Just hope that within in those 5 years that one of us (Fog/Lange etc etc) makes a game that'll bring things back.

tf2 won't die ever because it's a completely free-to-play, steam-based game that is objectively a really well-made title

the player base will always be there

I think it's actually like 4-5 100k tourneys + a deal with MLG maybe? Heard from ppl in the SM scene that it is likely to be picked up by MLG, and that ubisoft set aside $1 mil for SM tourneys.

It won't die, but it'll lose popularity.

TF2's competitive scene may die, but TF2 itself likely won't. F2P + hats, it's going to last a long time. I don't think TF2 is going to die anytime soon anyways, as it's been pretty stable (even growing, though I can't say that for 1+ years).

tf2 has done nothing but slowly grow literally the entire life of the game, both competitively and casually

it will continue to do this for a pretty long time

also, you guys underestimate how big the dota playerbase is/how deep the game is

just from a mathematical standpoint there are literally billions different hero comps/builds you could use that would be viable at least SOME of the time

the interest may wane in a few years in na, but as far as sea/china/malaysia/eu/russia those dudes are gonna be playing dota 2 for 10+ years easy

having one map doesnt hurt the game. thats like saying soccer/football or any sport will get old because it only has one field

I'm currently thinking that if iD Software don't make a new Quake game in the next 3 or so years, they're really silly.

Quake Live is still running, kind of, but it's losing momentum and while there are a bunch of good comp players and casters there, it does seem like it's losing some of the appeal it had.

Maybe we're just living in an MOBA age.
