dont expect to be good instantly, this game is hard as fuck to actually get good at unless ur a grinder and do that shit properly

Locals and vary a lot. Like if its in a college town, they tend to be ok. My local is a bunch of weebs that smell bad.
Don't be intimidated though, you will have fun, and you will get destroyed by somebody, possibly everybody. We all started somewhere.
Never been to a major so I can't say, but locals are definitely worth trying out.

Been to a couple locals, if you intend on attending some, remember my sage advice; take a couple bottles of axe or old spice body spray with you. I'll take thanks in tf2 or csgo skins

I play Marth. I've been to a few regionals and they were pretty stellar. The locals though are a different story. One of the first pieces of advice I was given before I went to my first tournament was "if you wanna play melee you have to be a degenerate." I thought of it as a light hearted joke but honestly...
holy shit
But I agree 100% with what geknair says.

I go to a weekly just about every week and usually go to regionals within an hour or so on weekends. I'll probably be PR'd next cycle.
Melee is really easy to get into these days. Get a controller (nintendo brand, either the smash4 ones or original-- 3rd party are always terrible), an adapter, and set up this version of dolphin with an iso of NTSC melee v1.02. Or if you already have it, a GC/Wii and a melee disc works fine.
Depending on where you live, locals can be really good or really bad. Mine are great; we have one weekly that gets 30 people minimum during the semester and the TOs do a good job of making things run on time. Conversely, the region to our west has at least 5 weekly/biweekly tournaments that rarely break 20 entrants and they're not nearly as competitive.
One-day regionals are the most fun tournaments IMO.
Play whatever character you like so long as it isn't absolute trash (think worse than DK/links). Until you at least reach an intermediate level, any character can work.
Don't listen to anyone that tells you that X is broken, Y is too easy, etc. The level of mutual skill required before a given situation actually becomes intractable is far beyond anything you'll accomplish within the first few months of playing at the very least. The best thing about melee is that there is counterplay to almost everything in the game.
Never gone to a major and probably never will until I think I'll be a legitimate competitor at one. Paying >$100 for venue/brackets + needing to get housing overnight is unreasonable for a tournament that I won't make it out of R2 pools in.

Falco/Sheik.
I started off playing Sheik when I started but ended up picking up Falco just for some issues with playing certain Fox styles but eventually just ended up liking Falco's combo game more and Sheik ended up becoming my secondary for just the Marth matchup as I enjoy it better than playing Falco into Marth.
Followed the game for a while but only ever tried playing the game in the past 4 years. I've attended big tournaments near me such as CEOs here and there and Paragon Orlando 2015 and didn't make it far but its still a good time since friendlies are always going on and just hanging out with some cool players.
With today's netplay scene its very easy to find someone with decent ping to become a practice buddy and just grind together. You don't HAVE to go to a local to play the game and practice due to this but locals you can meet some real cool peeps that want to have fun with the game too.
Getting into the game is fun and just learning the mechanics but don't jump into the game trying to be the fanciest player in the world trying to perform some technical stuff like multishines and all that won't be too helpful when learning the basic things like knowing how to move around with your character and neutral/punish game for said character and obviously directional influence (D.I) should come first and the rest comes with it.

I used to play spacies pretty actively before I started grad school. I really don't play very much anymore simply because I don't have time.
If you ever get the chance go to a regional/major. Its a ton of fun hanging with the dudes from your region in a setting where you aren't competing against them like a local, and seeing how you all stack up vs players you aren't as familiar with. Watching sets on site is also cool as hell.

I played a lot of sm4sh with friends for a couple years then got into the competitive scene at the end of 2016. I went to super smash con 2017 and really enjoyed it but I have always found melee to be more enjoyable to watch so I took my cousin's wii, got 20xx and I have been learning the game for a while now. The only people I ever play against are my brother and cousins but they all suck. Hopefully in the summer I can go to a few Xanadus and really start competing in both smash games.
Luigi/Falco main btw.

I main captain falcon because taunt to SD is my favorite combo
only gone to locals a couple of times because of my old work schedule. will probably start going again real soon
I would say 75% of the people I've met thru smash are pretty cool, normal people. The really good people aren't gonna care if you suck, they usually get excited about new players wanting to learn the game and will help you out a bit

fox
locals are 99% garbage players with ~3 people that are decent and 1, rarely 2, that are actually good, that only show up for the free check
majors are fun to go with ur goons
pr means pretty much nothing unless ur top ~3 in a region, considering only about 100 players are actually good, and arcadian players in regions like norcal/socal would easily be on a pr in a weak region like nj or canada
can potentially be the least fun game of all time when u have to play dash dance camping marths w no neutral, falco or a ics/samus player

theres nothing wrong with being a bad player
its just true that 99% of all players are bad, especially so in regions like the midwest or south (except florida) where the top prd players aren't even top 100
outside of top 100, there's probably around another ~50-100 players that are actually good, but can't go to nationals to show how good they are

I play fox, I go to most locals and pretty much any major tournament in the Netherlands(which comes down to syndicate) and plan on going to Heir 5.
If you don't have any experience playing melee you will be getting absolutely trashed by almost everyone you play against for at least half a year depending on your region, so don't get your hopes up because you have competitive experience elsewhere.
And don't go to tournaments to "do well". Go there to get bracket experience and play friendlies against people you don't see in your own region. Experience matters far more than a set win
