I decided to run Core Temp for the first time in forever and for whatever reason decided to test it while at idle, gaming, and streaming. I feel like the non-idle temps are bad, but I honestly have no idea.

I'm assuming the yellow means I'm running too hot. I read somewhere that an i5 should idle around 40 and should only get up to 70 when doing things like stress testing so it obviously shouldn't be running that hot for very long periods of time. Sorta makes me glad I don't stream very often. Anyone with experience with i5's know If I really do need to cool it down, and if so, how?

Thats pretty hot, try repasting?
I'm not sure what the tjmax is for sandy bridge but it looks like your temps are really close to it if everything was under 100% load.

That is hot. I'm assuming you are at stock clocks and using the stock heatsink and thermal paste, both of which are awful. Solution: Cooler Master Hyper 212 plus and Arctic Silver thermal paste and cleaner. Like $40ish could get down to low 20s idle if you apply correctly. Also check case airflow. Clean out pc, properly, dont air blast everything. Summer approaching, dont die.

Well the nice thing about my house is my basement is freezing year round so I'm not too worried about summer, but yeah I'm planning on cleaning it out and seeing what i can do about new paste. Ty everyone.

Get a aftermarket CPU cooler if you are running the stock one. The cooler master 212 is perfect if you are on a budget.

Technically there probably isn't physical degradation happening at that temperature but it is high. The thermal paste that comes with stock heatsinks is usually really bad, just replacing that might be enough.

I would also recommend the CoolerMaster 212. The 212 comes with paste as well, but you should always have a tube extra lying around in case you need it, Arctic should do. If you are using stock fans (the ones that come with the CPU) it generally isn't recommended to do anything above casual computer use.

i actually use the stock fan with an i7-3770k oc'd to 4.2ghz and have never had an issue with overheating, even when playing games like max payne 3 on max gfx or doing other stuff... still wouldn't recommend it, tho, and i need to get a new fan

i think your volts are just a tad high for that clock, im running an i7 2600k at 4.4GHz at 1.28 volts, im pretty sure most k series sandy and ivy bridge can make AT LEAST 4.3GHz without even touching the voltages.

Your voltage is too high. I would be wary of going any higher than 1.35 volts. I caused instabilities with my 2500k by keeping my voltage at ~1.35v to get 4.5ghz for a few months. I can't even get that high anymore.
