See now I've always flicked super hard (soldier main) for most of my comp experience but I think it would benefit my aim more if I started tracking instead of flicking, but everytime I try to track it always ends up devolving into flicking a lot. How do I get it in my head to just track shots more?
Tracking won't necessarily make your aim better, but if you want to try anyway then there are some practices that you can do to build some muscle memory. A common one is to make bots bounce on tr_walkway and then track them with pistol, you can google the rest.
I also found that lowering sens makes it a bit easier to track, you can lower it and build on the fundamentals of your aim for some time before moving it back up to a sens that allows you to react to things faster.

Practice is your greatest asset. Although, finding that optimal sensitivity where it isn’t too sluggish or hyper speed can help a ton. You’re granted with a median, and depending on certain circumstances you have the ability to decide whether to flick or track.
tr_walkway with hitscan can be pretty useful but something I found to be more practical and to learn more realistic movement is to play medic and when you're healing someone who is jumping around like crazy try keep your crosshair on them as much as you can, it'll help you learn real movement patterns of players and how to setup shots better (especially if you track them and then try to arrow them)
forcing myself to use the lightning gun in quake has really helped my tracking a fair amount
as long as you hit your shots within the timeframe that you have to hit them it doesnt really matter how you aim tho

Watch soft Aimers like aim, make a conscious effort to track while playing mge with buddies or dming
Don't be self conscious when playing is a rule number one. I've tried to start flicking less myself and I've noticed there are a few factors irl as well - if I play for the first time but early in the day for example, I'd flick like I have 1cm/360 and I can't stop it, but if I'm tired at the evening and launch tf2, the same sensitivity feels perfect which allows me to aim as softly as I'd like to. Ultimately, you can try to play a jump map for a few minutes just to start aiming more precisely. In my experience, the most consistent players don't play like they have Parkinson, but would just snap quickly and aim smoothly. Flicking is for those mad shots you have to hit in 0.5 seconds and that's why you see it so much in 6s, but the best advice I can give you is to play the way you have always played and don't change sensitivity or huds etc., stick to what you are used to and progress will happen naturally.
all these nerds writing essays lmao just be urself man
i'm suggesting the obvious but either lower your sens or lock your elbow
i've seen a lot of really good soldiers who flick all their shots but on paper it's a less reliable way to do it

dont overthink it just aim flicking or tracking doesnt matter if u hit ur shots
I tried to do this ages ago but I found that my aim suffered heavily, especially with sens change, and that it essentially useless to force yourself to aim in a particular style when it comes down to having good DM. So do whatever is comfortable for you and that's what you'll be best with
