I was playing a game of Dota and I had a random thought. Let's say big plays (airshot, 4k, etc) were symbolized with a bit of text on the HUD during casting. This would be similar to Dota's "double kill, triple kill, etc" system, but different (maybe no sound, no flashing text, etc).
How do you think this would make casting? Would it distract from the overall experience of the cast or would it increase immersion in the cast? Also, what would you define as a play "big" enough to be shown this way?

I don't think it's a BAD idea but it'd still be a question of implementation and usage. Currently the easiest method of noticing a "big play" is via the killfeed where if a single player goes huge it becomes obvious. But what use would an airshot notification have after the airshot? An instant replay feature would be a lot more useful than a notification system in my opinion. Also think it'd be easier to implement instant replay over airshot notification. Maybe we could do both?

An instant replay feature would be great, probably way better than what I suggested. but it would need to implemented correctly and needs to be shown without interrupting a current play.

What would be the benefit of being notified about an airshot or something after the fact during a cast? Also, how would an airshot notification be implemented to avoid constant notifications about unimpressive shots on someone who was just slightly off of the ground?
An instant replay feature might be cool, but tf2 is usually too fast-paced to replay something without missing other important things, so I'm not sure if it could really be utilized.

I'm gonna use this thread as a way to write down this idea I had one time:
Think of like, a plugin you can put on servers. It collects data around the map as the game goes on. It tells when someone gets a medic pick, when someone gets an airshot, gets kritzed, etc etc
The plugin then takes this info and puts it on a website. Since STVs have a 90 second delay, the info popped up says something like 'medic drops to headshot in 90 seconds' and the timer ticks down until it reaches 0 then the notifier goes away.
This could be used like the Big Status Monitor but in a much easier way. Cameramen can catch any really big moments by just seeing when they come up in the STV.
Of course this would be terribly hard to make and implement, but it's a quick idea I had one time that kind of pertains to this thread.

Maybe we could just get someone in the server who'd just communicate big plays to the casters before it happens on the STV, that'd prevent plugins from replaying twenty inches airshots and stuff. I don't know if that goes against some rules though.

Perhaps a SM plugin on match servers that tracks streaks and DPS? Maybe uber drops and melee kills too. Then it can send something via a web interface to the casters.

I don't think it would be helpful at all for airshots (only thing significant about it is watching it), but it could be cool for 4+kills and uber drops, I guess. Not really necessary though.

if you could go back and show quick replays of big shots during stalemates in postproduced casts, that would be sorta cool

That's be awesome if it could work ingame, nothing more satisfiyng than getting a quadra kill and the lady screams it to all the players(well yeah penta is better but whatever). If I could have the announcer scream airshot that's be so cool

Pretty sure something similar to this exists

People that know more coding than me: couldn't you run a parser on the .txt file being written to the server as the game's going on and have it look for key words?

As in Arie's live stats and logs plugin used currently by vanilla tv?

I think a pop up notification may create a lot of pressure on whoever is working the camera to not miss the shot, since everyone will immediately know if it was missed. And if the airshot or whatever was missed (by the cameraman, the shot itself landed), it'd probably make the audience feel frustrated or like they're missing out because the didn't see the shot.
I think a knowledgeable person working the camera and a bit better spectator UI to work with would be better.

I agree, I could see it being really distracting.

M-m-m-monster kill?
But seriously, while I think the idea has potential, it is important to make it more than just a derivative of those plugins that play Unreal sounds and display text in the middle of the screen. There's a fine line between valuable additional info and clutter that makes everything look more "pubby" and unprofessional.
I know that's not necessarily what you are going for, but that's the first thing that came to mind, given the suggestion of showing some text for something like 4k.
