Hey Guys!

I recently noticed that my cl_updaterate, cl_cmdrate and rate regularly change when i switch server.
Updaterate is either 66 or 67
Cmdrate aswell
And the rate switches between 60000, 100000 and 200000.
I was just wondering if that affects anything.

And is it normal that ive got a config.cfg (That i cant delete, it gets recreated every time), an autoexec.cfg and a default_config.

Thanks in advance ^^

use 66 in both rates as a vast majority of servers run on 66 ticks anyway
you notice the changes because each server is set up in a different way and they will enforce their own settings (or rather limit)
yes, that's completely normal. config is where you stuff is stored, autoexec executes each time you open the game and the default one is where the default values are stored

Real Update rates and cmd rates constantly fluctuate. Updaterate in general you'll average around 66/s but it can be as high as ~68.x or be much lower if on a overloaded server. CMD rate should be relatively constant provided you have 66+ FPS even then usually a PC still can keep up at 66 even thought the client is running at ~40fps.

The rate switching is due to server configuration sv_maxrate is what's capping it.

so if you have

rate 400000

And you play on server A with

sv_maxrate 100000

Your rate will be capped to 100000

and if you join server B with

sv_maxrate 60000

Your rate will be 60000

sometimes i feel like after i join a capped server, and than without restarting the game and join a different server that has a higher rate, the rate stays the same as low as the first server i joined. is this a placebo thing that i'm feeling or is it that the rate stays capped as the one before?
what i mean is if server A with 60000 and i join server B with 100000 does it stay 60000 or goes to 100000?

rate makes no difference unless:
-its set too low to handle the game traffic
-its set too high for your internet connection

you need higher rate if there is more players in the server. A 32 man pub game is going to send more network traffic than a 12 player competitive game.

realistically rate 100000 is complete overkill. there is no difference in gameplay between 60k and 100k. 60k is also higher than necessary.

however with today's internet connections, high rates will not cause lag so why not.

@op those settings are all pretty good. it makes such a small difference, it does not matter.

@31 when you join a new server, your rates will be updated, check netgraph. for that reason plus the fact that rate changes nothing unless it is extremely low. your feeling is likely placebo or has another cause.

both of you should have rates in a cfg that gets autoexec if you don't already

Rate actually does make a difference. It determines the delay between packets (throttling packets based on bandwidth). Sure, at a certain point, the delay becomes negligible, but it's much further down the line than your conditions.

What's especially not true is 60,000 being higher than necessary. The bytes per packet in TF2 regularly average at around 1000, and even split packets sometimes, so a rate of 85008 to 170016 would technically be the sweet spot, with anything past that helping slightly more but not noticeably.
