#66 TF2 update for 12/2/15 in TF2 General Discussion

I mean it sucks if we have to use dx9 and people that don't want to see skins have to, but you're not allowed to complain about TF2 not getting support from Valve if you refuse to support the methods they use to earn money and promote awareness for the competitive community with skins like they do in CSGO.

I can understand complaining about performance hits, but if you're complaining about something like skins which you aren't forced to buy and will likely support the competitive community/infrastructure of the game then you are really dumb.

#401 Overwatch, who got in? in Other Games
Foxthe only thing i'm bummed about is missing out on getting onto a really good team early on since the beta is so elusive

i already bought the game so i'm planning on playing it regardless, but i think that really is the worst part for me

Though it is lame that people in the beta now can start getting onto teams if the game actually takes off it's pretty far fetched to pretend any of the current "top" teams will really the best teams considering all sorts of players with different backgrounds and skill sets will jump in and the talent pool will be exponentially larger.

Really to even call the current teams the best teams is a misnomer considering the population of not only total players but actual competitive players in OW is very low.

I mean if you're playing from day one of the actual open beta/product release you'll still very likely to find a team and establish yourself.

#27 Knuckles LFT in Recruitment (looking for team)

Dedicated gamer, will show up to scrims, and won't kill your team all while looking to improve.

Is also already pretty good, easily strong enough to be on an mid/upper IM team.

In fact, those first three criteria alone should grantee anyone mid-IM in this game.

Pick him up!

the301stspartanshruggerechanical skill = more decision making. Making a game easier mechanically doesn't make it the smarter game, take CSGO for example. Maybe you are countering his phrasing but I think it was obvious he wasn't referring to "dumbed down" as a less cerebral type of play, you are just arguing semantics at that point. He just meant that the mechanics have less depth to them
Huh no I was only arguing the general practice of calling a game "dumbed down" on the basis of DM mechanics. I'm not saying Overwatch involves more or less decision making than tf2. From what I see, I wouldn't even agree on the mechanics front. But I'm completely unqualified to make any statement about any of that because I've never played the game.

I'm glad we have a useless semantics argument over a simple phrase that everyone knows the meaning to which wasn't in any way incorrect.

#38 ESEA S20 Grand Finals: Ascent vs. Team SoloUber in Matches

TSU can definitely beat Ascent.

But thinking that the state of Froyo in the LB Finals is comparable to the current Ascent is not at all true.

It always confuses me when people write sentences like these and don't notice they're oxymorons

SheepylolOK so is overwatch actually any good? Is it worth me pre-ordering and do they give out beta keys to people who pre-order? I haven't seen much of the game so I don't know if its worth me buying now or not. Also will it actually kill TF2 I have noticed a lot of top tf2 players are gonna move to it. I think Tek even said at lan that he's going to overwatch now along with many others. I feel like i'm not done with tf2 yet like I still have 2 more seasons in me but I don't want all the top players moving to OW yet so I can still have solid competition for the next few seasons.

As a pub game on its own its very fun and has the potential to be a very solid esport that could be what TF2 wasnt.

Notice the world potential. If you've been watching any of the early tournaments it is currently a TOTAL clusterfuck. There's no way to tell who is killing who, what the state of the objective is, and who is doing well.

There's also a ton of visual clutter and many of the basic settings needed for good FPS competition like more fine-tuned sensitivity and graphical settings are pretty much absent.

Overall, the game is very fun as it stands with lots of potential to be a very good esport title.

It needs a lot of work though and it really depends on if Blizzard is going to pull their heads out of their collective asses or if they'll essentially abort another potential esport title from the get-go.

Edit:
Also I'll go ahead and say if you're looking for that super high skill ceiling mechanically based class shooter like TF2, OW is not that game. It will never be like TF2 outside of the classes and their similarity to TF2 design points.

The quake-like movement and aiming components are simply not there. There are OW unique mechanics that can be learned but in terms of the pure level of mechanical skill needed it is very very dumbed down.

This will please or displease a lot of people but it's simply the truth. Games are made to appeal to the widest audience possible and it's likely that a true class based shooter will likely never exist as an esports title due to the complexity needed.

#64 2015 black friday / cyber monday deals in Hardware

I'm running a 280x and my brother a 290x and he can run Fallout 4 on Ultra with a constant 60 fps pretty much and I just had to tweak some settings down while keeping textures at Ultra and can run at around a constant 45-50 fps as well.

Pretty good card if you don't want to drop more than like 250ish
