lynaUsing vista with 2gb of ram is pretty stupid. Using vista is stupid. get windows 7/8 and you will definetely get a performance boost
I personally think he should upgrade to Windows XP, also XP/Vista/7/(any32bit OS) 32bit can handle 4GB RAM
Also like to state your PC is getting old enough to the point you might as well just buy a new one. They don't make/sell CPUs for that socket type much anymore, same with DDR2.
PokemonAdventureYour issue is not RAM or windows vista. Your issue is not your video card either. TF2 eats CPUs alive. The two things you can do that will noticeably improve your fps are:
XP uses less idle CPU/RAM usage than Vista, he WOULD see a FPS increase.
TwitchTVJohn2639 frames 19.947 seconds 172.30 fps ( 7.56 ms/f) 6.574 fps variability
i5 2500k @ 5.2
2x GTX 680 SC
1920x1080
Chris DX9 frames (shadows disabled)
So I guess TF2 really does like high clock speeds T_T
edit: I'm questioning the consistency of this. I just ran it a second time with the same settings and got 164.4 fps.
I've tested this demo in a lot of different ways, things as simple as moving your mouse or pressing a key effects your FPS. I lost about 2% FPS just by doing those things in that test.
I've also played pubs for about and hour and a half and my average FPS went from 101.8 to 89.6 in that demo.
Point, alot of things effect your fps. Also restart TF2 if you've been playing for awhile and are about to do a scrim/match.
atmoAttempting to run the benchmark after Steampipe gives me a bunch of
Attemped to precache unknown particle system "Explosion_ShockWave_01"!
Doesn't seem to be any increase in FPS.
^This will likely be true for about 99% of people who play TF2, but people with low rpm HDs and/or bottle-necked by their RAM may see a FPS increase.
WaldoBecause of how unvaried the current benchmark demo is, I recorded another one, which includes a lot more camera movement and some places with no action. It's about 2 minutes long, still shouldn't take too long.

My time for it with dx9/shadows off/gibs+ragdolls off8509 frames 89.021 seconds 95.58 fps (10.46 ms/f) 8.416 fps variability
8509 frames 87.177 seconds 97.61 fps (10.25 ms/f) 5.715 fps variability
same settings that were in post #36 difference of about 4 fps
atmoAccording to a guy on Facepunch in 2010, the threading cvars should be left disabled:
//cl_threaded_bone_setup 1 //Causes crashes on disconnects!
Further testing required to see if things have changed in the meantime.
Hmm haven't experienced this yet, I will definetely say something if I do start experiencing this, but how I think cl_threaded_bone_setup works I would not be surprised if this is true if someone had a processor that didn't support to many threads (most likely less than 3, and you will probably have issues).
also like to say adding -32bit to my launch option increased my average FPS by about 3, but this should only help if you're running a 64bit OS.
other interesting results
Pre-SteamPipe
2639 frames 26.708 seconds 98.81 fps (10.12 ms/f) 4.014 fps variability
2639 frames 26.091 seconds 101.15 fps ( 9.89 ms/f) 4.014 fps variability
the only difference between those 2 results, is me moving my mouse around and pressing keys occasionally. (the one with less fps I was moving my mouse/using my keyboard)
meblooks like cl_threaded_bone_setup 1 nets around a 5-10% increase. good catch
guessing it might be unstable though or they'd set it to 1 in the config
I assume the command just makes bone models it's own separate thread completely, I also assume this command will only give an FPS increase for People with at least 3 threads on their CPU. aka Tri-Core and above.
Since MaxFrames and HighFrames were both made for literally the crappiest PCs which are usually Single/Dual Cores which is great for them but most people use these configs with Quad Cores, and was likely just never optimized for the MaxFPS a Decent PC could get.
My Guess on the matter.
-edit-
It seems most people got around 10-15fps increase, and the lowest I could see was mine with 7fps increase.
Most of the editting was pretty good, but some of it like the blood on the screen during melees, and a few of the transitions seemed a bit too distracting to the overall quality of the video. Music choice wasn't bad per se, I just don't feel like it fit the pace of the frags/video.
Still pretty damn good 8/10 would watch again.
crespiComanglia
you demo setting might've got mixed up, idk but if you have and binds that slow demos down you might've pressed it
Nope, I have no binds like that. Literally all I did was press the up arrow in console to re-input "timedemo benchmark1"
perhaps you have a variable clock rate on your CPU, and it lowered the clock rate of everything including your demo... kinda like how people would Overclock CPUs in the past to gain speed hacks in older games.
crespiI'm have a very strange issue. I loaded up the demo and let it play, everything in the game looked normal and my result came out to an average of 80fps.
Then I tried watching it again a few minutes later, without changing anything in my settings, no windows or heavy processes running, and the game looks like it's almost in slow-motion, and i'm getting no more than 30 fps average.
Can anyone guess what's going on?
you demo setting might've got mixed up, idk but if you have and binds that slow demos down you might've pressed it
also noticed that
cl_threaded_bone_setup 1 (it defaults to 0 for maxfps and highframes)
2639 frames 25.937 seconds 101.75 fps ( 9.83 ms/f) 3.899 fps variability
when it was
2639 frames 27.844 seconds 94.78 fps (10.55 ms/f) 3.452 fps variability
I will make more posts if I find anything else that increases FPS at least for myself
rays2639 frames 30.184 seconds 87.43 fps (11.44 ms/f) 3.084 fps variability
Additional notes: Ragdolls on, gibs off. I run two monitors, and am on Windows 8. I also have 8GB DDR3 1866 RAM.
Any reason why my results are so low? I feel like I'm doing something that I shouldn't be.
Disconnect 1 of your monitors and see if that helps, could also disable some aero settings for when you play.
2639 frames 35.798 seconds 73.72 fps (13.56 ms/f) 2.738 fps variability
CPU and overclock: Phenom II x4 940 @ 3.2 GHz (default)
Graphics Card: HD6670 1GB
RAM: 4GB DDR2 800
Driver version: 13.1
dxlevel: 81
Resolution: 1440x900
Full-screen or windowed: Fullscreen
FPS configs enabled: Chris MaxFrames (with texture and light filtering turned on)
Shadows: enabled
aero disabled as well
I ran this test twice got mostly the same results, but the 2nd time I ran another FPS benchmark and got the roughly the same average, but my minimum was like 46fps and max was about 89fps.
-edit- all bellow will have the same setting originally states with only minor differences
same setting shadows turned off
2639 frames 30.000 seconds 87.97 fps (11.37 ms/f) 3.595 fps variability
same settings as Original but with light and texture filters off
2639 frames 34.305 seconds 76.93 fps (13.00 ms/f) 3.692 fps variability
same settings as Original except with mat_trilinear 0
2639 frames 33.573 seconds 78.60 fps (12.72 ms/f) 2.574 fps variability
(oddly enough I also tried texture/light filters off + this and noticed that leaving the filter on and this off gives you more FPS)
ragdolls on
2639 frames 36.929 seconds 71.46 fps (13.99 ms/f) 2.133 fps variability
mat_specular 1
2639 frames 33.963 seconds 77.70 fps (12.87 ms/f) 2.576 fps variability
weird I didn't think this would help fps...
mat_specular 1, mat_trilinear 0, shadows off
2639 frames 28.449 seconds 92.76 fps (10.78 ms/f) 3.515 fps variability
I would like to thank the OP for making this otherwise I wouldn't be able to get a decent minimum fps, and I hope some of my results help people find out what settings they want to use.
oh and I've been wondering for awhile if the file found in this thread ozfortress com/showthread.php?t=39676 (it removes the bullet impact debris) increases FPS or not
2639 frames 27.844 seconds 94.78 fps (10.55 ms/f) 3.452 fps variability
(this is with the last settings I used)
YankeeFog's DM servers are always hella full and hard to get into after ~5 est, so it would be really nice to have another DM server to open things up for more people. Between MGEit, MGEit west and Reddit's MGE server, and MGE servers being higher capacity and a DM server, I think it would be beneficial to have another DM server to choose from.
Not to mention the countless community/team MGE servers
-edit-
If you do go with a DM server can you please make it more than 8 slots? and allow headshot/smg only snipers?
