CapuI don't know if this is dead, since the last comments answering stuff are from too long ago, but maybe I can get some answers from Setsul (or anyone else who knows more than me):
- I'm thinking about getting a new monitor soon. What are the recommended ones nowadays? I personally don't care too much about color fidelity since I'm colorblind and I already have a monitor which will probably be better than most 144hzs at it. I'm looking at the 250€ range (could maybe go a little higher if it's worth it).
- I don't mind having to configure the monitor myself (I've heard the xl2411z is pretty popular even though you have to install drivers and set it up). However, I'd prefer it if I could do the same thing in both Windows and Linux (Debian in particular).
- Is the FreeSync/G-Sync situation still the same? I already have a 1060 and I'm not planning to get rid of it anytime soon, so FreeSync is worthless. Should I look into G-Sync monitors or is it still not worth it?
- Anything else I should know that has changed/is about to come out/etc?
About the only things that are about to come-out that are worth talking about from a gaming perspective are some Ultrawides, the 27in 240Hz panels rather than the 24.5in ones, and HDR panels most if not all of which are going to be outside your price range.
Gsync still costs a bit extra and if it's worth it is down to how much do you want it. Do you play games that are regularly below the max refresh rate while also being above the minimum refresh rate (I believe typical is 144Hz to 48Hz)? How important to you that those games are butter smooth?
As for recommendations, depends on what you're going for.
Samsung CFG70 (24in) their's also a 27in model. 144Hz; 1ms; VA Panel. Has a slight curve good color, and an amazing contrast ratio. VA panels tend to have inconsistent GTG times though but if you're playing mostly for smooth gameplay and having a great contrast ratio I'm not sure if their's a better option.
BenQ XL%%%% basically any of the benq 1ms 144Hz TN panels. Good features, decent customer service, 24in and 27in models. 1080p or 1440p, some have Freesync some have GSync, some neither. You'll probably find something that fits your requirements from 1 of their gaming monitors.
Asus VG, MG and PG line ups more or less the same thing as benq, but with a few more options like some IPS models. Personally I think they have some issues with QC with their flagship monitors. PG278Q has roughly 20% 1 star/egg rating on Newegg and Amazon (BenQ equivalent XL2730Z was around 10% 1 star rating) PG279Q is a similar story.
AOC and Acer also have several models but tbh I never paid much attention to them due to either ASUS or BenQ offering a similar product with a higher quality or a lower price with similar quality for the time I was looking.
