What was your first experience in competitive TF2?

I started playing pubs in march or april of 2009. In 2010, I made a team with some friends to play the Highlander Community Challenge and get those shiny medals. Then, in 2011, I finally wanted to try some 6v6 because pubs were too easy. I tried to play some br pugs, but it is kinda hard to play it if you don't know anybody, so I went to play some 150ms lobbies. Later in the year I was invited to play a Pubbers vs. Pros and did well as soldier, so I finally joined the competitive scene.

Just to clarify (coming from someone with experience organizing a league with medals...), it is not Valve's job to distribute the medals. They add them in-game and give the necessary information for the league to distribute it (which are some programming shenanigans that I have no knowledge about). So, gotta blame the league for not receiving it.

How did the other countries adapted the "Hold the door" to Hodor thing?
In Brazilian portuguese, "Segure a porta" (which is the exactly translation to "Hold the door") went to "Porta" and then it magically became "Hodor". It made no sense.
I've also seen that in French they used "Qu'ils n'aillent pas au-dehors !" (which means like "Don't let them outside!") instead of "Tiens la porte" ("Hold the door") and it transformed in "Pas au-dehors !" and then to "Hodor". It was kind forced, but at least not as bad as they did for portuguese.
