#133 TF2 benchmarks in TF2 General Discussion

CPU: i7-4790k @ stock (4.0ghz)
Graphics Card: AMD Radeon HD 7850 2GB

dxlevel: 81
Resolution: 1920x1080
Full-screen or windowed: Full
FPS configs enabled: Chris maxframes
Shadows enabled/disabled: disabled
Additional notes: 2 monitors..and I probably need to update graphic drivers. I carried my HD over directly from my old system w/o re-formatting so who knows how optimal this is running.

cl_threaded_bone_setup 0: 2639 frames 14.277 seconds 184.84 fps ( 5.41 ms/f) 10.502 fps variability
C

cl_threaded_bone_setup 1: 2639 frames 12.915 seconds 204.33 fps ( 4.89 ms/f) 10.658 fps variability
C

Quite the improvement over the ole core2duo...and holi hell i've never seen windows boot so fast. Feels like 5 seconds.

#190 PC Build Thread in Hardware

Hey Flatline,
For the LGA 1150 motherboard- Do you think you would ever do SLI or crossfire, or are you more of a single GPU person?

If you're likely to only use a single GPU this is a good budget option- has killer NIC and very good onboard sound quality for the price point:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157501&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=

You also get an M2 express slot, Asrock IMO is the best for budget boards. I'm actually doing a build right not using this, and it seemed like the best bang for the buck feature wise.

the i5-4690k is what you would be looking at for processors if you're looking at the latest unlocked i5.

#104 Boeing 777 Shot Down in Ukraine in Off Topic
Dr_HeinzPeople, I just want to remind you all, statistically flying is still the safest way to travel.
The only reason is that people think it is dangerous is because if something goes wrong a lot of people die at the same time.

With vehicle travel you have some control or at least the illusion of control over situations. It's that feeling of complete helplessness with air travel that puts fear into people. When I'm driving I can treat every car as not seeing me and trying to kill me, and do other things to try and minimize my risk. With air travel you just have to sit back and hope that extremely unlikely dice roll never comes up, because it's completely out of your hands to influence the situation. That is a very unsettling feeling for a lot of people.

This is terrible...like 80 were children as well. Judging from some comments here I guess this also serves as a time to reveal you're a sociopath.

shadowplay is also a pretty nice feature on nvidia from what I've seen. Bang for the buck is usually solidly on the AMD side but there are compelling reasons to go Nvidia.

#43 New pc is laggy in Hardware

Just be glad that Intel has built in damage protection on their CPU's (it automatically throttles to protect itself when overheating). Basically the only way you can kill chips nowadays is to manually provide too much voltage..it didn't used to be that way!

#50 Competitive shooters? in Other Games
trogPheeshTitanfall is supposedly going to be free to play this weekend.

CTF is a lot of fun, just needs more players.
That actually looked pretty fun. How come titanfall doesn't have a lot of players?

On PC it basically boils down to:
[*] EA was the publisher, many people avoided on principle.
[*] very high initial price on release, as it was primarily focused as an xbox one title
[*] multiplayer only...but lacked some basic multiplayer features on release (didn't even get the ability to host private games until later)
[*] terrible matchmaking, which is the only option to find games. This drove away lots of players in the first months as it did a worse than awful job at matching skill levels and would actually drive players out of the queue. (Note they are FINALLY getting some basic autobalancing in the upcoming patch and re-doing how they match players in a couple of days, along with much some other weapon balance tweaks that look almost perfect, so I'm finally optimistic!)

That said the movement mechanics are really, really fun. The maps are amazing overall...you can chain wallruns for speed and bunnyhop to maintain momentum, and they managed to balance the gameplay as a pilot very well with that as a titan. CTF is seriously the most fun I've had playing capture the flag since TFC as I'm a sucker for advanced movement.

A decent number of TF2 guys have been playing it. Yaug, Rep, pyyour, blink, surefour?... dunno I forget the others.

Alaric- is there a typical time when the pugs are most active? I think you guys should do another round of advertising the channel.

#1077 MAJOR TF2 update for 6/18/14 (6/19/14, Love & War) in TF2 General Discussion

They tried to bring back the tfc sniper rifle (and botched it..so far)...clearly now it's time to bring back the tfc green pipe launcher to fill the niche left by the sticky nerf!

New (classic) green pipe launcher:
[*] pipes can bounce and slide somewhat on the terrain (do not use same physics as 'rollers'.. would need to tweak the physics and friction of this carefully)
[*] fires at consistent arc/power...(instead of charging stickies you use the geometry of the map to vary your minimum attack range as there is still a minimum arm time)
[*] No damage ramp up

sticky launcher will remain superior at setting traps and have farther reach, but the green pipe launcher would be superior at pure damage and aggressive area denial...also using geometry in your attacks is fun as hell for some reason. Make it happen!

#16 The Classic - Demo in TF2 General Discussion
dummyYo pheesh, does fatal still play in those tfc.invite pugs? wheat asked me to play one and fatal didnt get first pick so he just straight up left and we had 7 people sitting there waiting for an 8th for like 30-40 min and then the pug died

hah...sounds about right for him. Don't think he plays too much anymore from what I've seen. The cheaters/aholes are kind of why they made the #inhouse chan which is invite only. I'm sure you could get added if you want to jump into some games more reliably. Blink you should give it a whirl again sometime too :)

#9 The Classic - Demo in TF2 General Discussion

Yeah we still do pickup games in NA. There's #tfc.invite on gamesurge, but mostly they happen on #inhouse which you would need to be invited to. So idle in tfc.invite and you can ask amir/wheaties or akw (akwid) if you would be able to join. Assuming you're not a dbag and have some idea of what you are doing or are willing to learn/listen it should be cool. Generally from what I've seen they happen most often in the 8pm-11pm PST time range in the US. Euro tfc pickups are very regular on #tfc.pickup on quakenet on the weekends with NA folks joining those midday US time. There's even some argentina pickups on #tfcarg on gamesurge as well.

League wise though I don't think there's anything in the US anymore. The catacombs (old community forum) being hijacked did not help.

#483 MAJOR TF2 update for 6/18/14 (6/19/14, Love & War) in TF2 General Discussion

Imagine demoman was like it is now since the beginning and the meta game developed for 7 years around it...and then valve released a patch to remove the damage rampup. What would the reaction be? People would be professing the end of comp tf2 as demoman would begin dominating exchanges just putting out stupid amounts of damage...even after people adjusted.
And don't even look at outrage in pubs which would be a joke as demoman can single handedly turn a 20 person pub game.

Change is hard to deal with and many will just keep trying to play the same way they were, and it won't work. Others will adapt and look back in a year and realize this is a good thing and that it actually will end up giving the game more life. Right now the sentiment is that valve is fucking with what you like and are accustomed to, which is understandable. Give it a real chance though, it's a blessing in disguise.
