#168 RGB LAN 4 + TooManyGames in LAN Discussion

Apparently the rentals don't come with Ethernet cables, can anyone let me borrow one for lan? The one I have at home isn't long enough and doesn't even have the little lock things to secure it so it'd probably get knocked out at lan lmao
edit: thx console

DubThinkmarmadukeGRYLLSi think halftime is crucial, have definitely won/lost games because of a momentum swing/adjustment made during half time.sometimes you just get fucking rolled 3-0 in 10 minutes and gotta wake up at half time and try to claw back into it, and removing that would be pretty lame. i think there needs to be a time limit to ready up at half though, have had like 20 minute half times which is a majorrrrrr cooler and really lame.
On the flip side of this, playing ozf I've had a couple matches where we've lost the first map, but are able to readjust and turn around to win the second (or vice-versa). It's not quite the same thing, as it ends up a 'tie', each having won one map, but you don't miss out on the half-time thing completely with 2 maps/match.

Though this is totally true, I also think there's something to be said about analyzing your and the other team's play and readjusting in the second half and adapt on that specific map. If a team is able to come back from being rolled 3-0 on the first half it definitely shows that they were able to properly adapt their playstyle and showed themselves to be the better team. Losing one map and winning the next is one thing but bringing it back on an even playing field simply due to halftime adjustments is so much harder and I think the esea two halves system rightfully rewards teams like froyo who are able to do this.
On another note I feel like in a competitive game it's kind of lame to have the possibility of ties with one team winning map one and another winning map. I guess maybe it would be nice to be able to say "yeah we took one map off them" versus the sad "we were up on them on halftime and then choked and lost", but at the end of the day I definitely think it's worth it to have a definitive winner.

alfa@Sigafoo if you could disallow teams like FROYO do what they did in ESEA Season 20 and literally BE ALLOWED TO RESCHEDULE MID PLAYOFF MATCH, that would be great. Either use a sub or play with 150 ping, it just makes 0 sense to reschedule a match in the middle of it between maps because one of your players is lagging.

sounds like someone's fishing for a cheap win...

#22 Most embarrassing thing you've done in tf2? in TF2 General Discussion

I once popped uber by accident in an invite match (new mouse in my defense fuck logitech that shits way too sensitive) in a tied game vs froyo black and then we lost the round and went into half time and me and my whole team were so demoralized that we ended up getting shit stomped in the second half :/

Another good one is I went afk for a minute to talk to my mom and came back to find that the map had changed and I lost all my progress in the 5 hour run I had been doing of jump_baqu (hadn't done any tier 6's yet and I was on the last jump, #62 I believe, which is a quint to prefire triple ceiling sync but I was mad close, it was so sad)

Yea exactly that's why I said what I did l lol, having a pause able to be effectively as long as you want let's you go to the bathroom or do whatever and can be an easy way to kill momentum if a team is winning and everyone's in the zone and then can't play for 5+ mins and get less focused/hyped up

Corunsonalso idk if this would sound crazy, but how about teams switch sides when a team wins a round? I feel it would a way for both teams to play red and blue side equally

This would be way too confusing both for spectators and for players as you're just swapping colors to shoot at each round I'm sure someone could space out and forget for a minute and then shoot the wrong people. The other thing is most maps are sufficiently well made that neither side has any real advantages so it doesn't matter much. Gullywash has the lamp that you can hide on that favors one team but other than that there's not much. Default badlands has the antlers in house to hide on and the vent in the sky for red side so that's just a strictly better side but it seems the new league will be using prolands instead (the antlers are a cool hiding spot that is actually hard to get up in consistently and doesn't offer much value but can reward you for knowing the map and knowing how to do the specific low jump right, don't see why it got removed in prolands but that's beside the point, the vent is mad dumb tho lmao)

Another thing that we should figure out as a community is the ruling on using wallbugs on invisible clipping in the skybox as a hiding spot. I think it's really lame and unreasonable for everyone in the league to go around the map learning every single one, not to mention that they give soldiers such a crazy advantage. There's a reason the map makers didn't add random ledges in the sky above snake choke or process rollout, cause that shit makes no sense and gives the player too big an advantage. It's not hard to do consistently as people like laz and kaptain have shown (just look at boshy he does it in speedruns and consistently hits wallbugs every single time) and doesn't add anything interesting to the game so I think they should be banned as if they're an exploit. Using a wallbug to avoid fall damage is negligible and I've only ever seen it done once but I see it like doing an edgebug to avoid fall damage, so irrelevant but props to you if you happen to do it (you can also jumpbug and avoid fall damage too but I've only ever seen it done in mge)

In the survey it asks which playoff ban order you prefer but these all seem a bit silly, I think it should just be one ban each, pick pick, then alternate bans down to the last map so both teams get a say in it. I think that's the most fair way of doing it and only doing 5 total bans and then one team picking at the end seems like it just gives that team too much control over the deciding map.

Maybe the second seed should have more control over the third in playoffs though to reward them a little, as is the seeds really don't matter at all because you just play the other one with equal footing as far as I know (you do get to choose if you want to be team A or B if you're the higher seed I think but they don't make much difference)

I think if they had like 90 second tac pauses you could do in between rounds that would be a really good feature, or just allowing a pause of whatever duration, and allowing them to do that for a tac pause (technically I think you're not supposed to tac pause in esea but ppl still do. Having a shorter one for both teams to discuss shit and figure out what they wanna fix would be good versus the 'oh lemme go to the bathroom' or get a drink or whatever that u will do with normal pauses lol

Noo don't do away with the halves rewind ruleset was good for lan but the half time is super good to allow teams to play strategically and comfortably while still having the possibility to come back and change their approach in the second half. With no halftime the first point that is won is easily the most important and it let's teams easily park the bus and force the other team to do crazy stuff out of desperation with the little time left.

With the half time the team that wins does so because they have actually cracked the other teams defenses and shown themselves to be the better team rather than simply getting lucky on one mid and wiping them and converting it to a round just to park the bus 1-0 with a sniper for the next 20 minutes.

Maybe I'm in the minority but the amount of comebacks I've seen enabled by the half time ruleset completely justifies the downsides (having to play a little longer I guess). Hopefully there's something in the survey though to gauge public opinion on it versus just going with what botmode suggested he wanted and sigafoo said he agreed he liked.

#207 Announcing RGL.gg Sixes - Season 1 in TF2 General Discussion

Idk why nobody has brought this up but these map selection systems seem really poorly thought out. In invite it has one team ban a single map and then the other team chooses from the remaining. On the one hand this means Kalinka and cp_coldcut will literally never get played which is a relief but it will also make it so every single team gets to choose one of their two best maps in one of their matchups.

This just encourages people to play the maps they are already good at because they can always pick their #1 or #2 of their competitors and secure a win that way. The current esea system allows for one of the best of three maps in playoffs to be like that for each team and the other is chosen by each team progressively banning down until there's one left, which is a much more fair system. The reg season way of each team banning 3 maps that may overlap and cancel is much better because it at least puts games on an even playing field where both teams have a say versus in RGL just getting dicked by the system and having to play either propaganda or viaduct vs ascent for example (in fairness they are really good at a lot of maps but these two most teams are not good at and do not frequently practice).

The weekly map system would be a fine option too esp given how much people were asking for it but they removed badlands and granary for some new koth map and kalinka (which most invite teams thought was bad and severely flawed in the invite new map cup btw, my team's even preferred cp_auschwitz as phlps calls whatever that prison themed map is called) so it would just be two weeks of upsets on these new maps nobody has played which would definitely fuck up invite standings and be too much. Idk why he doesn't literally just copy esea rules and shit to get people to jump ships without question and then slowly change it to his own personal brand of aids over time like he's clearly already planning to do.

Also Imma have to agree with twiiku here even if his leagues are successful, the way he frames it is disingenuous at best (for example, just on this thread he edited the op to claim sign ups have been great and they have "up to eight invite teams" but I'm fairly sure only a couple teams have actually decided they will play and the rest of us are on the fence (I know my team and ascent are both hesitant to say the least but he has us both down because Ma3la and sandblast asserted they would make teams and want an invite slot in case, but that's by no means guaranteed)

sandblast apparently told sigafoo that he intends to make a team and to reserve a slot but it's definitely misleading to say the least lol (dunno maybe the rest of the team will stick around hard to say this early)

im really curious to see what went through sigafoo's head that led him to the decision to take this map thread from a year ago that nobody even played or really gave proper feedback about and go 'yep, this one's a keeper'
even the lucrative new map test thread says it was untested like why on earth did they choose it lmao
