#7 Tips for maincalling? in TF2 General Discussion

Hi, I've never actually maincalled on a team but i love being a tryhard team leader on tf2center.com. I'm not sure what class you play but I'm going to guess pocket.

  • tell your team beforehand that it would help you a lot if everyone could try to follow your calls even if they think you're making the wrong decision. This makes it much easier for you and everyone else to learn which decisions were actually bad and which didnt work because only half of the team committed. Obviously, if theres a big reason for you guys not to push like "i just dropped" or "but they're respawning now" then yeah listen to them, but if its something a bit more subjective like pushing right or left then then they should probably just listen to you.
  • Make sure your commands sound like commands and not like questions and vice versa. In the heat of the moment its really easy to mix up "should we go in?" and "lets go in".
  • Don't just press tab to see if people are with you. Use your eyes to see who's around you and don't be afraid to ask if everyone is ready to push.
  • Since most pushes start off with you rocket jumping to make space, make sure to call it. It helps everyone else know when you're actually in and not just shotgunning stickies on the floor.

#15 Capnfapn lft s24 mid esea IM scout in Recruitment (looking for team)

hi, i think i am sort of looking again. I would like to play scout on a mid-im team but i know its kinda late to be looking so i'll play whatever for whoever. I'm free on standard scrim nights except for tuesday where i might be able to make it back home in time for a 10est scrim/match but I can't make make any promises. For this season at least, i think i would be best suited for a team thats looking to have a good time playing esea opposed to one where the goal is to improve as much as possible. I don't mind playing open at all but i would prefer to play soldier or demo if thats going to be the case.

#1 metal / hardcore / punk / heavy stuff thread in Music, Movies, TV

There's another thread like this but its 2 years old and in another subforum so i figured i may as well make another one here. My recommendations list ended up being a skramz starterpack (the 6v6 elitist version of screamo) for the most part but there's some other stuff mixed in there too. Lately i've been trying to get more into black metal so if you have any recommendations I'd really appreciate it!

skramz(real screamo!!!lol) with a bit of a post/black metal feel sprinkled in, yet still melodic and varied in tone and energy. I saw them about a year ago at a house show and it was probably one of the most intense, intimate, and unfortunately non-sexual experiences I've ever had. If you're into some of the more extreme kinds of metal and want to a place to start from with skramz I'd recommend checking these guys out.
https://ostraca.bandcamp.com/album/last

Here's a really fun and well executed emoviolence (i'm not joking) band. They kinda sound like the band above but more to the point and obnoxious in a good way. To get an idea of what I mean, I ordered a tape from them and they packed it with "thank you so much #dismantlehardcore" written in sharpie on a single magic the gathering card.
https://blacknail.bandcamp.com/

skramz with atmospheric post-rock elements and unique vocals, really artsy and passionate.
https://gilliancarter.bandcamp.com/album/dreams-of-suffocation

Really technical and frantic skramz. This album is at its best when played as a whole and has some of the most creative guitar playing and drumming I've ever heard.
https://ampere.bandcamp.com/album/like-shadows

Not sure how to describe them, but i guess some sort of black metal. Someone on youtube called them war metal.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3NYrnanq-c&index=95&list=LLvotbsHLSQsXUVsrlmecaeQ

jazzy piano + shrieking japanese lady + hardcore. Basically the musical equivalent of Nichijou. this song sounds kinda like system of a down (a band i feel so dumb for overlooking) but they're pretty all over the place.

Can we please stop being so tolerant towards people being shitty to new players before the game even starts? If a captain makes an obviously poor pick let him know but try to phrase it in a "dude why didnt you pick pokemonizepic? he's the best pocket in the game" and not "wtf why did u pick ninjacarl99". I'm not trying to call anyone out in particular, I just want people to be more aware of it because it really doesn't help. I'm all for shittalking within reason and being an edgelord but it really shouldn't be directed at people just because they were unlucky enough to be picked by an ignorant captain. The dumbest fucking thing about people who do this shit though is that they clearly care a lot about winning but are acting in a way that obviously doesn't help. All you're doing is tilting them and making them nervous before the game even starts, making it harder for them to ask you for advice, and creating an environment where everyone is more likely to throw. All you have to do is be nice and most n00bz will let you micro the fuck out of them. It's good to be honest with people about their abilities and where they should be playing, but it's probably best to wait until after the game is over before you suggest mixchamp or faceit or whatever.

PendjiGo back and read the reactions to forced public matchmaking. 'This isn't fun anymore' 'I don't want to try hard to win'. These are people who want to be a minority in an fps game, where they can still get to shoot people and have an impact without being at risk for helping you lose.

I've seen a lot of friends get into OW, enjoy it, then slowly realize it's like any other moba. You play the wrong class, you don't perform as expected of the average player. The same goes for matchmaking. You go from being 1 of 12 to 1 of 6, you have to do twice as well and in most cases also be the only player of that class. That alongside with suddenly having to be on voice and interact with strangers is jarring to most.

Even if you do want to play medic, you're one of the most important components of a team. Can't drop ubers, can't miss arrows. Useless shit scout on the flank? "Oh I'm having a bad day". There's no easy way around this other than to be a ballsy player, and a hat simulator doesn't motivate that kind of behavior.

That said, it's also just not a competitive format. Competitive cs:go? Literally the same map and setup. In that way the new 6v6 MM is pretty nice for introductions, but obviously it's still shit. There really isn't a way to go about this without diving in head first. Playing with other noobs is probably the easiest approach, but hey. Who wants to do that.

I agree that some people just want to screw around and there will always be people like that, but I also believe there's a considerable number of people who say they enjoy screwing around more than they enjoy playing seriously because the current environment makes actually trying to win less fun that it could be. I agree that 12v12 pubs are a bad format for anything truly competitive, but there's a difference between being competitive in terms of what that means to us as 6v6 players and what it means to "try". For example, there are 6v6 players who believe highlander is less competitive than 6v6 but also believe there are people who focus on winning the objective in highlander as much as they do in 6v6. I think whether people try or not has more to do with how people perceive a mode should be played than anything inherit about the format itself. mixchamp and tf2center are both places where people can play 6v6 with pretty much the exact same ruleset and average skill level but you're much more likely to have teammates who play around the objective through mixchamp.

I agree with what you said about people disliking their experience in Overwatch because of the pressure they experience as being one of only 6 players. I think this actually works to tf2's advantage though because lots of OW players are aware of TF2 and since their issue with overwatch has more to do with with feeling pressured to perform or play a certain class than it does with simply disliking trying, pub tf2's 12v12 format could easily attract players who want to try but also don't want to feel too pressured to perform. The problem is that this doesn't take care of the all too common problem where your team has 3 snipers and 4 spies, which is why I believe Valve should make an effort to make medic a more fun and therefor popular class to play. There will always be people who want to play sniper and spy no matter how dumb of a choice it is, but by having a medic on the team you're likely to have less of them because the other classes become more fun to play. Spy and Sniper both don't benefit much from getting healed at the skill level of most people in pubs, whereas classes like soldier and demo become way more fun even if you can't rocketjump because there's a medic there to support you.

#31 what do ya'll do outside of tf2? in Off Topic

I'm a game dev major which I used to think was just a meme degree but then I realized all degrees are memes to some degree and that as long as I work hard I'll be alright. I'm a bit behind in school becuase I was a shitty student for too long but now I'm getting back on track and looking for internships.

I play guitar in a REAL SCREAMO and not FAKE SCREAMO band called Crowning. Our first release should be out early February on unironic cassette and the internet. You can check out one of the songs on it at crowningpool.bandcamp.com. not everyones cup of tea of course but we've been really well received so far by people who the type of music we play :) it felt awesome to hear that the guys in some of my favorite bands are loving the two songs we've put out so far.

I like craft beer and coffee becuase im hipster trash. I'm not into homebrewing or writing pretensions reviews on beeradvocate.com, I just enjoy trying all of the different stuff out there.

I wanna get swole like pankeyman but I'm lazy. I put on about 15 pounds pretty quickly in a couple months about a year ago which I unfortunately lost :< I'll probably get back on it soon since the new year resolution crowd should be gone by now. By the way, if going to the gym intimidates you don't worry, you will quickly realize that nobody cares what you're doing whatsoever and that the hardest part is what you do outside of the gym such as eating right, staying hydrated, and getting enough sleep.
