#56 rewind 2 shoutouts in TF2 General Discussion

Oh man where even to start.

First of all, shoutout to ESA and especially Wade. We as a community have had other homes over the years ESEA GXL, FITES Insomnia, but nothing comes close to the level of dedication and interest expressed by ESA. They really make us feel special and, in a way, Rewind is the primarily TF2 event we've always deserved. Special shoutout to ESA's server guy for coming in on his day off to help answer a few of my questions, their technical guys for always having a solution to whatever batshit request or need we had next, and their production team for fitting in seamlessly with the workflow.

Extra special shoutout to Wade for hosting the after party. I'm 90% sure he'll never make that mistake again, but it was a great time.

Shoutout to Dreamboat, Smithsonian, Turbotabs, Cornpop, Ma3la, Tino, Row, Ombrack, Nuze, Dashner, silentes, getawhale and all of the production people my hung over and jet lagged brain is forgetting. Production was amazing this year and really set the bar for TF2 events imo.
Shoutout to Kenneth for being genuinely awesome and somehow being the only tournament organizer in TF2 history to not have the entire event run extremely late.
Shoutout to tsc for min/maxing pepperoni levels on pizza until it is too late to order. Secondary shoutout to Dreamboat for it being his fault.
Shoutout to Samiface for once again showing her insane dedication to our gigantic family and for being a real friend. <3
Jasbutts for the airbnb, never again will I want to fit 6 to a hotel room. Everyone having a bed is amazing. Also for being a friend even though she probably had no idea who I was before the event. Your kindness is appreciated.
Kevinispwn for seamlessly doing any job asked, for being my LAN partner, and for being my absolute favorite person in TF2 <3
Extine and his roommates for hosting a chill little get together on Saturday night. I couldn't make it out to the main gig at Sami's because I had to be up super early, but I had fun chatting with everyone.
Sideshow, Bren, Muma, and every other gamer that made it beyond our little community for coming back and being hype as fuck
Pete, showstopper, griff, slicerogue, and everyone else that came up and said hi, you guys are all awesome.

Shoutout to all the invite teams for being cognizant of our time constraints and really following admin requests with almost no push back. I know slamming through 3 games with 5 minutes between each and having to swap sides in between sets is hard, but your patience and professionalism shone this lan (yes even se7en)

I am 100% forgetting people but I'm fried from 24 hours of travelling and a weekend of working such an amazing event. Thank you to everyone who came, watched, donated, or even just plays this stupid little hat game. I cried on the way home because every year this gets harder and harder for me to pull off with my real life and I know that one of these will be my last. You guys have been better than my family for the last decade and I can never thank everyone in the community enough for that.

#24 Every time so often in Off Topic
ArguedOysterAlong with this thread, what if someone saw all these clues and actually called the police?

Then they would have been doing something in an attempt to save a life. I have been in the position to a. make that call, b. have that call made about me and c. I am fortunate enough to work in a position where I am one of the people who gets sent when those calls are made.

I can tell you without a doubt that the actions of a concerned friend, acquaintance or bystander absolutely 100% saves lives.

How many people did you frighten with what might've happened? These are very sociopathic tendencies and hopefully professional help will make things easier.

I'm not sure calling someone who is clearly hurting and in need of help a sociopath for reaching out the only way their illness would let them is a good strategy. It's also factually confused about what it means for someone to be a sociopath.

I'm a nobody to scold you like this, but part of being human is realizing that you're always part of a much larger system and everything you do affects other people. You're never truly alone and there are many people in the world going through the exact same things and feeling the exact same feelings.

This would have been an excellent sentiment.

Puo, I don't know you and you don't know me, but from one internet stranger nerd to another, you can fight this. Behavioural therapy is incredibly effective and helpful to many many people. Never be afraid to ask for help or to admit that you need help. Mental illness isn't some special class of illness that means you have to face the problems alone and without the aide of family, friends and good medical help. We don't ask it of cancer patients and we shouldn't ask it of those that suffer from illness of the mind. I'm glad you are okay. Keep fighting. <3

#83 Las Vegas shooting... in World Events

I want to give a giant shout out to all the every day people, off duty medical professionals and other people in the crowd who thought quickly, helped those who they could, commandeered vehicles and drove hundreds of people to the hospital and rendered first aid. These incidents give me so much hope and love for the human race because there was one shooter, but there were dozens or more people willing to risk their own lives to render aid to complete strangers in their time of need. I'm supposed to say that bypassing the triage system and just rushing that number of people into the hospital isn't the right move, but the important point is that they tried and did their best to help with the knowledge and abilities they had. That is the solidarity that we should be focusing on.

I also want to thank the hard working police, fire, EMT, paramedic, nurse, doctor and other hospital staff colleagues who did they best they could and saved countless lives. Las Vegas has 1 level 1 trauma center and they performed on a level that my own city (which has 3) would be envious of.

trippa it must take a lot of restraint to get over a food addiction, but blaming it on genetics is wrong. the most "luck" involved in staying at a healthy weight is having parent figures who raise you with acceptable eating habits

I was with you until here.

Absolutely 100% its calories in/calories out (some people quibble over the idea that fat calories vs carb calories determine how the body ultimately processes excess caloric intake and effects like insulin resistance and metabolic syndromes caused by carbohydrate overconsumption. I agree with this research but you can still overeat the 'right' calories and end up overweight) but the genetic basis and heritability of addictive type behaviors is pretty well established by the medical literature.

Food is good [citation needed] and consumption of fatty or carb rich foods is known to stimulate the dopamine pathways via the D2 dopamine receptor, which is one of the primary reward pathways in the brain. These reward pathways emphasize and accentuate "good" behaviors, or ones that we have evolved to favor. There is a certain polymorphism of one of the regulatory genes that control how these D2 receptors are formed and how many are formed. These polymorphisms have strong relationships to addiction of other substances (tobacco, alcohol and opiates are the most commonly studied) and in Stice et.al (2010) they were shown to have both an effect on activation of parts of the brain either known or thought to have an effect on decision making and reward pathways AND was associated with downstream weight gain.

That is just one example and the actual clinical picture of obesity is almost assuredly multifaceted and nuanced with a combination of multiple genes and environmental (including being raised with good eating habits). However, saying that there is no genetic involvement at all does not follow currently well established science.

I run into this problem at work where I see many opiate addicted patients. There is a strong empathy gap between care providers and addicts, many people are of the opinion that the users could "just quit". It isn't that easy and failing to have empathy for the unique difficulties that a very real disease like addiction presents will fail to capture huge parts of the population and increase overall morbidity and mortality of things like opiate, alcohol and yes, even food addiction. I try and remember "there but by the grace of God go I". What separates you and me from the crippling alcoholism and opiate abuse is tenuous and paper thin.

#7 HELP! PC Crashes from TF2 in Q/A Help

It sounds like 1 of 3 things.

RAM: you said that you rebuilt everything so maybe/prolly not. If you haven't changed out RAM, try out removing all but 1 stick and see if your TF2 is more stable. You would probably be having other problems if this was the case.

SSD: I had a similar problem when I was loading TF2 from a dying drive.

Video drivers: I've heard of this problem with certain versions of video card drivers. Try rolling back the drivers to before you were having this issue.

#5 HELP! PC Crashes from TF2 in Q/A Help

What exactly is happening during the crash? Fans go crazy? any error? black screen or freeze frame?memory use through the roof? Happen with other games or just TF2 (source games?). What parts have you replaced exactly?

Completely removed TF2 and reinstalled? Set everything to default (no gfx config, no hud/custom folder at all)

#19 Fun Facts!! in Off Topic

In (healthy) people, the primary urge to breathe is not due to low levels of blood oxygen, but instead elevated levels of blood CO2.

The hand is supplied by two arteries on opposite sides of the arm, the radial and ulnar artery. In healthy people, you can totally occlude one or the other and still have adequate blood flow to the hand.

The original treatment for syphilis was to infect the patient with malaria (to kill off the syphilus) then administer a drug (quinine) to induce a fever to kill off the malaria. (Bonus fact, Julius Wagner-Juaregg, the physician that won the Nobel prize for this, is the only psychiatrist to have ever won a Nobel in physiology/medicine)
