#175 Watch: College Kids idea of identity in The Dumpster

The impulse isn't conscious but the decision to act is.

Suicide is very much a decision. To not want vision is to want blindness. To not want life is to want death.

Did I say I was comparing cutting of one's own legs and blinding oneself to getting medically and scientifically supported surgery to correct gender dysphoria? Cool your jets.

I'm attacking the idea of "If it makes them happy and doesn't hurt anyone else then it's ok."

MelonTFthere's nothing wrong with doing what makes you feel happy as long as it doesn't hurt anyone else, regardless of what you may think of the people want to be different

Meet Jewel Suping. She has had a fascination with blindness since childhood. She'd try to blind herself by staring at the sun. By 18 she was wearing dark glasses with a cane. Eventually a "sympathetic" psychologist poured drain cleaner into her eyes granting her wish.

Next up we we have this brave and beautiful women who decided to cut off her legs. "I didn't want them. My brain just kept saying get rid of them... so I got rid of them."

Do these people effect you or your family? Probably not. Should they be able to do whatever they want? Within reason. Should we encourage such destructive behavior because it's something they truly want? Do we encourage a suicidal person to kill themselves? Why not? Shouldn't we try everything in our power to prevent these people from doing such harm to their bodies? Can you even argue for these people's sanity?

How would you feel if your daughter told you she won't be happy until she cuts off her legs or blinds herself? Would you be okay with that? Would you encourage and enable her or would you try to make her happy another way?

Don't patronize me. I'm merely pointing out the cultural difference not reminiscing or whatever you think it was.

MagikarpI remember how back then, all this shit was never really much of an issue and humanity wasn't as this disappointing. It is a true wonder on how things will be in a few years at this rate.

Yes, it's funny to think back to this scene. This movie is 14 years old and would've been torn to shreds today.

saturn_If you think getting SRS is going to form a forcefield to stop being from being bigoted towards them then I think you're seriously kidding yourself.

No, transitioning isn't going to solve all trans people's problems. They're still going to have a mountain of violence against them. It's almost as if people are happier when they're allowed to be themselves! #woah

My last point is that not every trans person pursues or even wants surgery. It all depends on the individual.

I don't know what SRS but my point is that transgender people who do the surgery are at very great risks. Considering you don't walk around with your genitals exposed nobody would know that they've done the surgery meaning these suicides are caused by the biological/hormonal damage of the surgery. People don't always know what's best for them and the argument of "I want it so it's good for me." is not very sound. I don't claim to have a solution, just that we should try to treat it rather than enable it.

harvestas do gay people, it's almost as if society's awful treatment of trans people leads to a high suicide rate, on TOP of the already established gender dysphoria and internal conflict.

I posted the swedish study to demonstrate that sex assignment surgery often won't make the subject happy and can easily lead to suicide. Patients became 20x more likely to commit suicide. It is very significant and perhaps an indicator that an answer lies in a different direction.

The statistic is for post op patients so the way society treats transgendered people does not have a significant effect on the suicide statistic considering society can't see what's in your pants.

Persons with transsexualism, after sex reassignment, have considerably higher risks for mortality, suicidal behaviour, and psychiatric morbidity than the general population. Our findings suggest that sex reassignment, although alleviating gender dysphoria, may not suffice as treatment for transsexualism, and should inspire improved psychiatric and somatic care after sex reassignment for this patient group.

OUTCOME:
There was an excellent response to pimozide 2 mg daily, with a cessation of both cross-dressing and the wish for sex reassignment. When, after 1 year, the dose was reduced to 1 mg daily, there was a rapid return of the cross-dressing and the wish for sex reassignment. An increase in the dose again led to a remission which has been maintained since then.
CONCLUSION:
Pharmacotherapy with pimozide should be considered in cases of doubtful gender dysphoria.

fatswimdudei hope youre not trying to say that gender dysphoria isnt real because a few people misdiagnosed themselves

Of course it's real but it is a treatable condition that doesn't have to involve hormones and sex reassignment surgery which can actually make the condition worse and can potential lead to suicide.

I'm not trying to discredit science just refuting "at the end of the day trans people are stuck with their feelings about their own gender". Often times people don't really know what they need to do to become happy.
