#35 Nominees for Community items in TF2 in TF2 General Discussion
glassnot sure who already has one, but what about people who made the most used huds?

Huds would be weird. Do you give it to people like rays who made arguably the most popular hud ever but hasn't played tf2 in years? People like hypnotize who do a great service but not really their own stuff, people like colly who hardly releases anything but is widely recognized, or people like me (was gonna say wiethoofd but he's already on the list) who contributed a lot to the technical side of huds but didn't make the best actual huds? The whole hud scene has a lot of deserving areas, and I'd love to see people get community weapons (hud devs put in their effort to the community for nothing in return and that's exactly who should get community weapons), but realistically there's too much different people who could be given one.

What I would like to see is comanglia getting on the list, comanglia's cfg was standard for competitive and pubbers with bad computers for years.

Hildretheven as a casual observer I can name you every league admin for ESEA and UGC

Who do you think is deserving of a community weapon then? Should save a lot of headache for everyone.

#8 Fix for lingering HUD animations on death in Customization
SentinelOr just wait till someone that's not as clueless as me comes along and tells you what to do

edit - i checked flathud and the animation names are the same so they're probably the same in every hud so i guess all you gotta do is paste the code in your hudanimations file

This is true, since all those animations are called by the game automatically, so a hud that doesn't use them wouldn't work. Their stop events may run more events, but even then this would work. Only exception is stuff that uses the bonus cross as the healthmeter (magnum hud, or the many horizontal healthbar tournament IDs) where this fundamentally doesn't apply anyway.

Could also include it in its own file and have hudanimations_manifest point to it, if the hud in question uses that system already. Just makes it easier whenever an update eventually hits and animations need to get updated.

#4645 HUD editing: short questions, quick answers in Customization
pancake_stacksAnyway to display text vertical?

Not a standard way.

You can set the label width to be low and wrap text, but each individual letter will remain normal. You'd need an entirely edited font if you want it to look like it was actually rotated 90 degrees, but even with that kerning will be completely fucked.

Only other way is to just get an individual label for each letter/number. But that takes a lot of work, is resolution & potentially system dependent, and (without tons of workarounds) won't work for things like health that aren't fixed text.

eeeapt refuses to hire anyone, im broke, and im moving in a few months so im not gonna save up for that

IANAL and it depends on the state/city (look up your state laws first), but assuming that your contract doesn't say you're responsible for infestations or it was very obviously your fault (leaving trash and food everywhere), your landlord is responsible. And by refusing to deal with it, they could face fines or could get sued or you could get the cost from dealing with it yourself deducted from your rent, again depending on the local laws.

Something to look up because it might fix your problem without costing you anything / be good threatening material.

#32 modern art in Off Topic
4812622i have decided to live my life under the assumption that modern art exists so rich people can give huge sums of money without being taxed and everyone who says that they understand it has no fucking idea what they're talking about

Why would they gift some random artist money
Why would they go to auctions for it, where someone else can outbid you
Why do they need a new art medium for that, why not just trade around with Rembrandts or whatever
(afaik taxes still apply to art auctions too anyway)

#4606 HUD editing: short questions, quick answers in Customization
maniacalDoes anybody know how to remove the negative sign from the damage numbers? check grape's videos for an example.

You need to edit the font itself to have a blank glyph instead.

  1. Download fontforge, birdfont, or any other font editor of your choice
  2. Open the font you want to use
  3. Edit the "-" glyph to be blank and have a width of 0
  4. Rename the whole font from within the font editor
  5. Export as .ttf or .otf with the new name

From there you'd just install it like any other font, and use it for damage numbers.

#11 linux advice in Off Topic

I had good results with lubuntu and got a sizeable fps boost, enough to boost it from jittery to smooth on my laptop (I don't have the exact numbers because my laptop stopped booting to windows 7 and 10 entirely). Also comes with other benefits like windowed borderless having no input lag, which is a leg up over ubuntu since it has a desktop compositor.

I'd imagine any lightweight environment distro would be great for fps, and any decent distro at all should still be better than windows.

#9 we esports now? in TF2 General Discussion
All_Over_RSit also wouldnt be possible to include as just a single sport.

This doesn't necessarily exclude it. An olympic sport can include different disciplines that are basically unrelated, which can themselves include different events. For example, 10m platform diving is one of the events under the discipline of diving, under the actual sport of aquatics (which also includes disciplines like swimming and water polo, which are obviously very different). Odds are the same with esports, the sport itself would be the broad category and each specific game would be their own event.

Olympic video games is dumb for a lot of reasons, but it's not as different from traditional sports as far as olympic categorizing goes.

#3 Biology Major in Uni in Off Topic
ilikesheepAlso what you want to get out of it, there isn't that much work specific to a biology degree. Out of the many people I know who graduated a year ago in biology/marine bio/zoology only about half of them have graduate jobs.

Just on this note, there are a few things you absolutely should do during university to help with this.

If your university offers a co-op program for your major (or anything else that's just work terms under a different name), you should take it. It's the easy way to get work in your field during the year, and as long as you do good at your jobs it builds the connections to get hired there after graduating too. It just makes getting your foot in the door so much easier. In my major (cs, which is pretty good for jobs) the worst I've heard is some people not getting a job for one work term, vs people out of the co-op program who potentially don't get a job in the field their entire time there.

Your professors are one of the best ways to get a job relevant to your major too. Some do research at your university and need helping hands, and some work in the industry and know how to put in a good word for when their company is hiring. Meeting them during their office hours or after class, asking insightful questions, showing interest in the subject, and just talking to your professors is good for a lot of reasons (learning more, potential grade bump-ups, usually they're also just nice people in general) but also because they're a good connection to have.

Getting involved with your major's society, or hanging out in the lounge if you've got one, can be a great help. Again it can help your grades (you might become friends with the people marking your work, you'll likely meet other go-getters in your courses that can help / do group projects with, and you'll certainly meet someone who already went through your courses) and it's good to get involved in general. But these are mostly people also looking for work in the field and could tell you about places you've never thought of, or give you a good reference for the places they're working. On top of this often being where aimed-at--university-students jobs get posted, and often meeting your professors there too.

For bio in particular, do labs would be my advice too. One of my friends is a chemist who gets involved with their company's hirings, and a surprising amount of their graduate employees are bio majors who had more lab hours than their chem counterparts. They can teach the chemistry needed faster than they can train competence in labs, and I'd imagine it'd be the same for many other jobs.

rocketslaythis game looks pretty damn cool but i kinda doubt ur gonna get $64k in a month

Diabotical got $215k USD on kickstarter and Reflex Arena got $64,500, it's not unheardof by any means.

#6 What are the best HUDs for 4:3? in Customization

http://huds.tf/ lets you filter out huds that don't support 4:3 (or any other aspect ratio), and even then a fair bit of the non-4:3 ones still work fine for the most part.

Huds are 99% personal preference so it's better to pick what you think looks nice than what's most recommended.

Laptops are incredibly useful for university no matter what you take. You pretty much need access to a computer given how much homework gets put online or how much projects require computers to do, so you may as well get one that you have with you all the time. If you don't care for paying for textbooks too, you can usually get them for free on your laptop and actually save money (if the professor's nice they might even give you the link directly) as long as they don't require stupid activation codes. And being able to kill time can be a godsend if your classes are spaced out much.

I can't really comment on difficulty directly, I'm not taking it but my cousin is a professor in it. What I've heard is that a few courses are bio-level difficulty that make-or-break most students, while others are bird courses you don't need to worry about.

How universities organize labs would depend on the university. Generally they'll want you to review notes or lab instructions beforehand, but usually you don't actually need to if you remember most of the recent lectures. You can (but shouldn't) be late for classes but always try to be on time for labs--no one gives a fuck if you're late to class but your lab instructor and partner(s) will get pretty annoyed by it.

#215 mastercomfig - fps/customization config in Customization
osvaldoCould you please explain what the following commands do ? I didnt understood everything from the comments you left in the config. Especially for that last one, I'm genuinly intrigued.

cl_yawspeed makes +left and +right faster or slower. Generally used to make you spin around in circles quickly. Mastercom's comment there is wrong, it has nothing to do with the mouse.

cl_pitchspeed is the same as cl_yawspeed except there isn't an up/down alternative to +left/right so it probably doesn't do anything. Maybe for controllers, but controllers already have their own more direct way of doing this.

m_yaw changes your horizontal mouse sensitivity. Some people like to set it to 0.0165 if they're running 4:3 stretched, but it's preference then, and you probably should leave it at 0.022 otherwise.

m_customaccel and stuff should be obvious, it's ingame mouse accel.

cl_idealpitchscale comparison: 0.8 (def) and 1.3. I can't notice a difference within tf2 though.

#142 mastercomfig - fps/customization config in Customization
joshuawnwithout using sillygibs, what would be the best way(s) to hide the gib effects? would it be possible to preload custom files (e.g. textures and/or scripts relating to gibs that are pointed to null or missing files) such that they work on all different sv_pure server types?

You should be able to preload null models to hide them. Should work with both regular and silly gibs. I forget if clean tf2 does that for gibs or not, but it'd just be a matter of copying and renaming the model files. Same thing as the no hats mod basically.

Don't commands already disable gibs though? Sorry if I'm mistaken but I thought that was an option.
