I'm always interested in talking to other people about music I like, since there aren't many people who can. I figured since a rap thread came up, I should try one like this as well. Stuff like Of Mice and Men, A Day to Remember, or even Beartooth is what I like. Anybody else?

don't trust anyone who says an entire genre is terrible and then links van canto in the same post, opeth is cool tho
I listen to a lot of stuff these days but I had a pretty long metal period (mainly into melodeath) so I got links bro
these are two instrumentals I like - nice if you know people who don't get extreme metal cause of the "screamo" vocals, people can see the appeal of this more readily:
In Flames - Man Made God
Woe of Tyrants - Sons of Thunder
Not an instrumental but one of my fav songs and if you tell someone to start the song at 2:10 (2:15 in this link) there is a solid 2 minute stretch without vocals that destroys
Arsis - The Face of my Innocence
More random favourites:
The Black Dahlia Murder - A Vulgar Picture
Arsis - Failing Winds of Hopeless Greed
Carcass - Heartwork (this is old school one of the bands that really brought a melodic sound to death metal)
The Black Dahlia Murder - Moonlight Equilibrium (BDM have the best videos)
At The Gates - Slaughter of the Soul (pioneers of the gothenburg sound)
Arch Enemy - I Am Legend / Out For Blood (female vocals, p unique)
Decrepit Birth - Dimensions Intertwine
Into Eternity - Eternal (canadian band holla, mix of death growls screeches and clean harmonies)
3 Inches of Blood - The Hydra's Teeth (more canucks, cheesy as fuck such a guilty pleasure tho)
Obituary - Chopped in Half (real oldschool, death metal's infancy. little chuggy for my taste greatest start to a song ever though CHHEHEOOOOOPPEDD IN HHHUUUAAAWWWWWW)

Yeah when you add -core to any genre it makes it shitty. It's a hard rule when it comes to music.
Been a metalhead since I was 9. Some good mentions so far, Opeth is always great. Recently though I've been really into Vektor, they're definitely my favorite band as of late. Imagine combining the speed and ferocity of Metallica, the atmosphere of something like Emperor, and the themes of Asimov, since their lyrical content is based on deep space/science fiction. Incredible stuff.
Both their studio albums can be found full-length on youtube:

It's hard to pick a favorite to present, but if you just want a taste maybe just check out this song:

Here's some metal to check out if you're new or not quite sold on the idea but don't worry it doesn't actually sound like metal. You see there's clean vocals and synth and string orchestration and you gotta hear this guy he's such a guitar virtuoso and don't forget that all the lyrics are about Vikings and pirates. Oh! And the wacky time signatures and jazz influences too.

The heaviest band I know of isn't even a metal band. They were more sort of an extreme noise-rock kind of thing.
Also, Godflesh. I fucking love Godflesh.

I generally listen to anything Hard Rock, Metal, Funk, Jazz, Prog, and some House, but im gonna post just some of the more metal-like bands.
King Crimson is generally a good listen, always have good music and also Robert Fripp is a straight up musical genius. Bruford's drumming is incredible as always. The Crim has not always been metal but when they have been they are good at it. THRAK is a perfect example, especially when played live, the middle of it is open improv and the beginning and end are generally extremely heavy.
Devin Townsend is probably my favorite solo metal artist ever. He has such diversity in his records, but Hevy Devy's heaviest album is by far Deconstruction. A tale of pain, suffering, and cheeseburgers, this album starts off slow but it gets absolutely nuts when Juular begins. By then it is just another 45 minutes of brutal metal that is always grating and dirty. Planet of the Apes is the best track off the album however.
Another one of my favorite metal groups is Meshuggah. This group doesn't need much of a description as they are legends when it comes to metal. Absolutely one of the best metal bands ever, they are brutal. Rational Gaze.

Some of my favorite music is technically metalcore. but I've gotten really picky. I tend to stay away from clean vocals, synths, and stuff like that.
Misery Signals - A Certain Death
August Burns Red - Beauty in Tragedy
Or for not-really-metalcore (progressive metal) I love Between the Buried and Me
Between the Buried and Me - Silent Flight Parliament
I'd love to find more death metal like this but I tend to get bored with death metal

You'd probably like Necrophagist and Spawn of Possession because they're also tech death wankery that is hard to listen to more than 1 minute of.
