Via HLDS:
Valve- Updated the Steam Controller config so +attack3 (special attack) can be bound for items like the Medic shield
- Fixed not being able to run a dedicated server and connect to it as a client on the same machine
- Fixed Killstreak icon alignment in the targetID panel when using cl_hud_minmode
- Fixed an exploit related to the Steam Controller and the turn rate for charging Demomen
- Updated the models/materials for The Medicine Manpurse, The Air Raider, and Pin Pals
- host_writeconfig now writes only bindings and convar values that are not default values. If you want a full config, use 'host_writeconfig <filename> full'.
- Mannpower update
- Supernova
- Reduced charge up time
- Increased the amount that damage contributes to charge
- Fixed a bug where outline effect showed on invisible Spies
- Fixed a bug where crit melee attacks were multiplying on top of a base damage increase. Crit melee attacks now do the same damage
- Demomen equipped with shields are now excluded from the across the board 30% melee damage increase
- Added highlight effects to active revenge powerups
- Reduced points for a flag capture now that the enemy cannot return a dropped flag by touching it
Rumor has it:
- More competitive piping was added: https://github.com/SteamDatabase/GameTracking/commit/9b099face6775e9ad95166ef232672a3ed242867
- To play competitive mode, you MUST be on DirectX 9 - DirectX 8 support could be killed off any day now at this rate
- Here's how the new item models will appear in your inventory: https://github.com/SteamDatabase/SteamTracking/commit/86107c893764750486cd83440480399e00ef0cde

I'm personally glad that DX9 is a requirement. DX8 is extremely antiquated (it's from even before the Windows XP days). Sure you might complain "b-b-but my FPS!", but do you see CS:GO players playing on DX8 at Valve-sponsored tournaments? Didn't think so.

Can anyone think of a good reason for them enforcing that?

maybe they should stop skins giving some players 40fps in DX9 before they try to enforce it

There is a LevelProgressMeter hud element in with the comp stuff, potentially for levels similar CSGO?

Yeah but CSGO players make bank and can afford good PCs if they are playing professionally. Also the PCs at Valve events are generally pretty good. CSGO is also better optimized in my experience, I get better fps on CSGO than TF2 even with fps configs and dx8 in tf2 but high settings in CSGO.

I'm just so used to playing on DX 8. I've played in DX 8 for almost 3 years with short breaks to see what dx 9 feels/looks like and some testing.
I'm not terribly concerned for myself at least for the FPS drop because the mean going from 280ish to 265ish. Though their's some people who depend on dx 8 to consistently get 144 or even 60.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DirectX#Release_history
just fyi dx 9 is also antiquated as fuck so saying dx 8 is old isn't a real reason tbh.

I guess the optimization update is gonna be so good it will render dx8 useless outside of looks? (which r_worldlights and mat_phong and other settings somewhat cover)

now I don't play csgo much at all, but I'm fairly sure you can't even reliably use DX8 in CSGO.
personally, I don't see much of a problem with using dx9 IF:
they actually make the game run well
options to disable skins/sheens, etc.
add a setting to enable dx8 style lighting(which will probably never happen)

let's be honest here none of those would ever happen not just the last one, we're talking about tf2 here

What the fuck, why I have to use dx9 to play comp? I don't want to and it's dumb to force people to do that
I mean it's fine if they will optimise dx9 so there will be no fps difference between it and dx8 but I'm so used to shit quality that I'm kind of afraid to play on dx9

Tbh after playing on dx8 for so long dx9 just looks terrible to me. Why on earth would they force something like that

It's possible they just want to use functionality that dx8 doesn't offer somewhere. I don't see Valve making dx9 required for no reason.

Feel free to take shits on me all you want, but the fact of the matter is Valve can't afford to keep supporting your antiquated setups forever. If anything you should be thankful that they even bothered supporting XP and DX8 past 2013.

Yeah except I have a 4670k and a 780 Ti and I don't get 144 fps with a dx9 fps config. That's by no means an antiquated setup. The game is just shittily optimized and removing one of the major ways to get better fps is dumb.

csgo graphics are way less intensive than tf2's from what ive played so theres a reason people are crying for FPS

It's called poor optimisation. 300fps for one person 120fps with stuttering for another

even though dx90+ is broken because they've neglected to optimize the game after the release of skins, I realize that dx80 was merely a privilege; lord gaben has the power to strip me of my frames whenever he wants. knowing this, I think I will write Valve a letter of thanks for allowing me to achieve 120+ fps on dx80, even if it was only temporary. the bright side of this is i don't need 120 fps to spycrab across badwater :-)
see you guys on the pubs
