fixed by using #29's method except i put it in a folder that you can download and unzip and put in custom (remove your custom hud first)

edit: this breaks creating parties and inviting people to your parties

TO FIX YOUR HUD:

go to:
custom>HUDNAME>info.vdf
inside info.vdf change "HUDNAME" { "ui_version" "1" }" to "HUDNAME" { "ui_version" "2" }

all credit to deldongo
it killed the lag and got my hud back

Ive been playing with friends for a bit and the party system does seem to work with the steam overlay using the join game option.

anyone else have a broken server browser?

I click "find a game" and nothing happens, and at the top of my screen is a black bar with the phrase "this match is safe to leave- disconnect" on it, and if I press disconnect nothing happens either
