Thanks to the efforts of the melee community and the devs at slippi.gg, Super Smash Bros. Melee for the Nintendo GameCube can now be played with less lag ONLINE than Smash Ultimate OFFLINE. There are a ton of resources explaining how rollback netcode works, but in short it opens up all of NA to play with each other with very little if any lag. It genuinely feels like offline playing people across the country, I've even played against someone in SA without experiencing noticable input lag.
It is miles ahead of the previous iterations of netplay and a very exciting time to get involved in the melee scene.
The new FasterMelee launcher, a custom build of dolphin emulator for GameCube and Wii games has released with built in matchmaking, so no need to deal with connect codes! It is quite literally plug and play.
If anyone needs any help setting it up, there are tons of guides on old.reddit.com/r/ssbm on the front page, and you can contact me as well.
I would highly recommend you support the amazing development team by donating when downloading the emulator, but you can always just get it for free too.
Get it at slippi.gg
Exciting times :)

wtf that's actually insane
only excuse I have left now for not playing melee is lack of a good controller

Don't worry! Universal Controller Fix has been baked into the new Slippi launcher so you don't even need to worry about getting a super good controller, I play on a smash ultimate one I got brand new on release and with UCF I can hit all my shield drops and execute techskill.

do you think the Switch Pro Controller would function with UCF + this online netcode (I have a Pro controller already)? Can you play Melee through your PC via an emulator in the year 2020? I'm sure there's a whole lot of compatability shit the community has come up with but I don't pay super close attention to the scene

I just played a couple of games and it's unlike anything else I've played before. Super easy to set up, super fluid, and the built in match matching makes it really easy to just hop in and play.

I'm assuming that the Switch Pro Controller has a USB connection and if that is the case I'm sure that it'll be compatible to plug and play with the Dolphin emulator given that you properly setup the controls. UCF is built into Melee and the emulator itself so again I'm pretty sure you won't have a problem using it.
People have been playing Melee netplay on emulator for awhile now but it always required use of external sites and other steps of setup. This new build is a huge step up making it much easier and accessible to play allowing for a better experience with less setup time.

like kawa said look for a local “retro” game store or any like salvation army type thing. places that sell collectible games and old stuff usually sell refurbished/salvaged controllers for all systems. If anyone in the thread is really pressed on finding an affordable gc controller you know will work, I could link u to this store website and you could have them ship you one (I imagine) or worse case you send me money for the controller and shipping and I could do that ! but if Ur not keen on getting yours in person I’m sure E-bay is fine or whatever
speaking of which I need a new adapter

tamboanyone tried this with wifi ? how is it?
it's very dependent on packet loss from my experience. it adjusts ping more similar to fps games than the input lag comp it used before

I'll gladly take you up on that offer if you have a local store with first-party or Hori controllers available that you want to support, would be much easier than trying to scavenge for one myself.

only real problem is sometimes ebay can be a gamble when it comes to how used/dilapidated controllers are; have had good luck with picking up used gc controllers online but YMMV; if you can manage it in-person is better if you're particular about getting a quality used controller

if you want to play but don't have a gc controller, it is possible to use a keyboard with decent mappings. this script gives you B0XX pad like controls. B0XX being the most prevalent alternitive to a proper gc in melee. Hax$ designed it, and in the last released rakings is #19 in the world using the b0xx so it's not just a gimmick.

to everyone looking for controllers through me this is the place I plan on getting the stuff from. It looks like the dude who owns it doesn't do shipping for anything so I'll middle man it for like $5 extra (on top of the controller+shipping). There is a "Get Quote" thing on the site so you could ask if he would ship you stuff. or add me. idc

I've bought >10 from here and all but one have been perfectly usable.
If you want to try the game, any controller you can use with Windows will work fine. If you want to learn the game at all seriously, get a GCC.
(if you want massive unfair advantages coupled with a few awkward downsides and a weird learning curve, pay hax $200 for his all-digital controller)
