I don't even play tf2 anymore and I still want to see s37 in the autumn.
Not just because I'm gay but also because I am in fact very fucking gay (but really please don't let me be gay without tf2 for 6 months)

Obviously I only speak for myself, but having the main season 5 months away is enough reason for me to quit tf2. Of course there's the possibility I'll start playing again when the main season starts, but without actually trying and having regular scrims (which most teams understandably won't do for map cups), there's not a lot of motivation to aimlessly add to your hours count.

i guess it adds some input to the topic, so i'll copypaste my comment from etf2l
I think making a 6s season is more beneficial than doing 6s cups, I’ve been talking with Gubbins on his stream and he made a good point: majority of games seem to not care about the cups mostly because a lot of people do meme stuff on it, there are no prize pools nor medals for one night cups other than pixel trophy on the ETF2L team profile.
Also a lot of people are isolated/working at home (like me) and more available than usual since this whole coronavirus outbreak which makes me think it would be actually a good time to push more games than usual while this plan makes people play less games than usual.
The only reasons I think it may be understandable are staff changes (sorry guys :D) and the server failure and data recovery attempts which I know it’s really hard task to do since you need to merge old data with new portion while a lot of people recreated their profiles, so their profiles differ with their ID and potential data, so basically in order to not dig in all data manually it needs some app to be written to compare and insert correct data. That’s some sort of rough stuff.
And of course please respect admins, I believe they’re doing their best to make European TF2 competitive as much fun for everyone as possible. If you place your opinions here, it’s highly likely they’re gonna read it and draw some conclusions.

So in a scene that is hanging by a thread, during a period with a quite literal once-in-a-lifetime set of circumstances allowing for an uptick in activity and motivation, ETF2L genuinely don't want to have a season for the next 6 months? For the purpose of loosely aligning with a LAN that may or may not happen, and one that there is no reasonable way of determining whether it will happen until 2021 itself? This is honestly a new level of mismanagement and self-harm from ETF2L, and that's coming from someone who went through a triannual cycle of bemoaning the questionable decisions taken in the past - all of which now seem completely trivial by comparison. Were it not for the fact that ETF2L have set a long-standing precedent for "questionable" decision-making, I would honestly suspect foul play.
I'd be very interested to hear exactly why aligning the timeframes of a hypothetical LAN and an ETF2L season justifies putting the scene on hold for half a year. Don't get me wrong, I can see the benefits but they are nothing more than a novel convenience, while the consequences could be absolutely devastating. We've had countless seasons in the past with poor overlap to their corresponding LAN events - it's not ideal but it's a hell of a lot better than having literally nothing for six months. Cups do not count, if you are going to purport the argument that they are an apt substitute for a season then I propose a simple solution to you: have an autumn/winter season, and then have a cup which corresponds with CHG 2021. Following the logic that cups are a fitting replacement for seasonal play, surely this is a completely acceptable solution with a far more optimal schedule.
We actually had a similar situation once where the admins did not want a season but the vast majority of the player-base did. The reasoning back then was that ETF2L did not want a season that ran through summer due to the interruptions vacations etc would cause, so instead we had an "interim" season. It wasn't a numbered season, instead it was just called AFS (all fucking summer) if I remember correctly. It wasn't recognised as an official season, but it was functionally the same and allowed the players/casters/viewers to maintain their usual habits. If ETF2L really won't see sense and revert their current decision, maybe some sort of modified season could be put in place akin to AFS, potentially with a shorter timeframe required. Either have less teams per division and therefore less matches, or trim play-offs significantly, but for the love of god just have some kind of season for people to play while you still can.

To add to this, if you really don't want to have a normal numbered season and want to run cups instead to test things like for example med scout speed changes and so on, just run the shorter season as a testing season. Have the winners get a signed 8x10 of twiikuu or something

I couldn't have put it better than Kaidus. For the first time in years I've not had to take the early shift at work, rush home, skip food or shove something down my throat in order to play games. Friends who have been considering quitting the game or have recently given up have come back due to the amount of time they have and overall I find people are just enjoying the game more. I know that a large percentage of these people and even those who have been keen to play for the longest time will not keep going for half a year without the idea of structured competition. Cups will not keep people motivated, they never have worked that way and yet ETF2L have deluded themselves into thinking it's what keeps people active during seasons.
Honestly at this point it feels like an overwhelming amount of the community disagree with this and even if not directly malicious, the choice of the admins here is so neglectful to the point where it feels as though they would like a huge chunk of the playerbase move away and the competitive scene take a massive hit in terms of numbers and quality due to what I can only describe as stubbornness.
Also that second post doubling down on what seems a poorly considered decision is terrible. What community projects could possibly be so important and interesting that 6s players will be engaged for a full 6 months? A cup with new maps? A cup testing Scout-Med speed changes? A "promod" that hasn't been created yet?
The tl;dr of "We want to be able to test some things community members have been asking for" is nonsense. The community has the time for TF2 and want a new season, maybe not immediately but there's no way the majority would want to keep scrimming for the potential of cups and 2 day tourneys. Don't pretend this is for the people, you know it's not.
There's so much more I want to say but at this point, it seems like it's falling on deaf ears. I haven't considered my opinion, or the opinion of the community to matter to ETF2L admins for years and this is currently proving no different. The scene is going to suffer, potentially fatally or to an irreparable degree and the organisation that has a say in it, doesn't seem to care. I hope they prove me wrong.

Admins in any case should be approachable and open to compromise, especially when the overwhelming ammount of feedback to a proposed change is negative, ETF2L Admins however seem to be following a trend of doubling down on their stance with extra blog posts instead of opening themselves up to the option of simply changing their schedule and working out a solution with the community that is needed for their league to operate.
But instead of just admitting that the proposed dates are just not a good idea and moving forward with a regular schedule (as kaidus already said: during the time with the highest team count ETF2L has seen in a long time due to covid) they double down with an entirely new post, while debating with users in the #feedback channel in their discord, even going as far as to banning people that voice their opinion in wanting the season to be moved into 2020, what kind of league is this?
Even in the past ETF2L Admins acted almost randomly, citing rules like the "Admin discretion" rule as a wildcard to justify any behaviour of the leagues staff, banning users for stuff that has nothing to do with the league, or just generally doing sloppy work.
I don't know what kind of league ETF2L is meant to be, I can only hope that the league either improves and learns from their mistakes or that a new league comes along in the future once ETF2Ls legacy comes to an end.

zxpObviously I only speak for myself, but having the main season 5 months away is enough reason for me to quit tf2. Of course there's the possibility I'll start playing again when the main season starts, but without actually trying and having regular scrims (which most teams understandably won't do for map cups), there's not a lot of motivation to aimlessly add to your hours count.
ikr? You'd have to be really motivated to grind with no return for 5 months.

Maybe another idea would be to swap the nations cup and the highlander season around. This way there aren't three different things overlapping and the main seasons and group stages are separated. The only thing you can't really avoid is the playoffs of a season/cup overlapping with the main season of the following season. But I still think people would rather have things overlap than no 6s season at all.

ETF2L The season would have to start late January to match up with that schedule and thus in a best case only leaving slightly more then a month break for playoff participants.
Clearly, some sacrifices compared to ideal scheduling will need to be made in the coming months. The Nations Cup, extensive map/ruleset Cups, "decent downtime" between seasons and a full Autumn 6s Season - we cannot have all of these. What I don't understand is the order of priority ETF2L has decided on.
6v6 seasons are the bedrock of of competitive TF2. They are what we care about the most, what get watched the most, and what teams work at the most. So it's inconceivable to me that we would sacrifice our flagship tournament for a handful of sideshows that inevitably won't carry the interest, passion or prestige of a proper 6s season. Not to mention that players returning to the game due to lockdown means the scene is as competitive as ever; let's not spit in the face of their renewed interest by palming them off with a few cups.
Don't believe me? Have a poll! I say this almost every time ETF2L is about to make a questionable decision with poor reasoning - this is a community league, so let's ask what the community thinks. We've already got plenty of evidence in this thread for what people want. And if playoff players only get a month downtime between seasons, then so be it. Maybe the minority involved in playoffs will grumble at the small interval between the seasons. But at the end of the day, we (especially those in playoffs!) are here because we love playing competitive 6v6. If it means being able to play the game we love, we will get over it.
