It's amazing what you can get away with when you're in peak physical condition and leave your Versace dress shirt unbuttoned. For a Milisecond I actually believed in that rape culture non-sense that ugly college girls always blab about because this female server at Cheesecake Factory couldn't stop touching my chest and even tried sitting in my booth with me. All I had to do was snap my fingers and she would bring me an A&W Rootbeer refill and clap twice for napkins. She said that she was working two jobs as a server to pay for college LMAO probably attending the University of Heroin. I told her that I would leave her a tip so big that she wouldn't have to worry about paying tuition this year if she let me smoke a cigi at my booth. Food slave said sure, even though she might get fired and gave me a huge piece of cheese cake with my bill. After desert I got annoyed by the two babies behind me crying from the smoke so I just put the cigarette out on the tip line and wrote "$0 Now that you rubbed my chest, here's my butt" hahaha what a time to be alive.

So I recently left the food service industry. I've worked in institutional and I did a short stent in fine-dining during covid.

Institutions don't care or even want tips. I worked in a hospital, so I was considered a healthcare-adjacent worker. You wouldn't tip your nurse, please don't tip me.

I worked as a chef for Aramark as a chef. The students basically paid a subscription fee for dining. You wouldn't tip any other subscription service, please don't tip me.

Lastly, I did prep and pantry for fine-dining. This is where things get a bit iffy. Some restaurants pay their staff well, most don't. Some restaurants split the tips received among the staff; this is more common than being paid well, but don't count on it. So generally speaking, when you tip, you are paying into a very opaque system that largely serves the owners, sometimes front of house.

It isn't abolished because 2 powerful groups in the industry want it to stay exactly how it is, Owners and FoH. Those opposed are BoH and to a lesser extent the customer, that changes with the demographic.

In my opinion, don't tip. The organizations that highly encourage tipping will lose their good staff if enough people don't tip, and wages don't rise to replace them. It is sadly on the consumer to force owners to price their menus correctly, and pay their staff fairly. Generally speaking, this amounts to shopping locally, no large chains.

???

if you're going to take a moral stance against the tipping industry the solution would be dont go out to eat and give the owners more profit from the system. they dont give a fuck if you tip if they keep making money. in the long term your single actions won't have any impact so you might as well not fuck your server over

your average waiter gets paid minimum wage because they are disposable. anyone can serve food. you dont need to pay them more than minimum wage. there will always be someone willing to work for that price

this is how i know you've never been to an alabama dennys or waffle house in the middle of the night. it is a raw experience. it is like the novel "bleak house" by charles dickens compressed into 30 minutes of weird smells and anger.

sadly the other end of the spectrum but I am thinking about the single moms trying to feed their family

also I lived in huntsville for two months right behind a waffle house

its unfortunate but its the truth. if you dont have any specialized skills you are disposable in the job market.

You're fucking over your server over regardless of what you do. The best option is to force owners into a more sustainable and ethical wage system.

thats accomplished thru large scale grassroots unionzation. you not tipping has no societal impact besides explicitly making it so the person who brings you bread cant pay for gas

yea as if ppl not tipping is gonna make the owners think "aw man lemme reconsider the pay, this waiter really cant make it and i need to be more ethical" they dont give a single fuck and wouldn't even notice if 50% of the population stopped tipping because it's not even on their radar

i delivered pizza in college in 2016 and made $10.50 an hour. if i worked for 8 hours and had no tips, i would've made $84 a day before taxes. i also had to pay for gas.

If you think for a second that management and ownership in any sort of full service restaurant give a shit about the wage and working conditions of its employees you have never worked in a restaurant. Tip your servers and bussers, people enjoy not going hungry.

I remember when i worked at dominos the management just let massive swarms of gnats surround and die in the big open container of pizza sauce that we used for all the pizzas. So that was how much they cared about the customer. Imagine how little they cared about their own workers. I think the tipping system is a stupid extra step in the payment process and that food should just cost more and workers paid more, but I still tip for a single reason which is (this happens more often than you think.) "If I dont tip, this guys literally going to spit in my food or fuck up my order on purpose out of spite." Also even though i embrace the idea of the tipping system not existing, the culture in the US is already this way, and theres nothing i can do about it, so i will also tip because i feel bad for the worker because i know theyre getting screwed by the system where we underpay them. It's like a snake trying to eat its own tail, an endless loop where the cause and effect cause each other. The only good thing about the tipping system is that it allows lower food prices for people who literally cant tip because theyre poor.

They actually get paid below minimum wage here in freedom land because they're expected to get tips to make up the difference. Min wage in michigan is 9.65 regularly but 3.67 tipped. Lots of waitstaff support it since low wage + tips is usually above normal min wage.

They would notice because the majority of their staff would leave for better pay, either to different industry or a better organization.

As for unionizing, it isn't viable in food service for a multitude of reasons. Talking about unionizing in food service is just a fun way to get fired.

how would they all leave for a different industry lol? this hypothetical mass non-tipping movement wouldn't suddenly expand demand for labor in other industries so it's not like they could just all find jobs being hourly-paid janitors.

also how would they join another organization within the same industry if this happens? the entire point of the lots of people not tipping is that it impacts a fuckton of different restaurants so it's not like taking a job as a waiter at a different restaurant would be any better, you're not being tipped there either.

^ Sorry but the argument being made here is precisely that if we all were to suddenly stop tipping, then the underlying structural problems which the act of tipping itself prevents would reveal themselves to be unethical and unpragmatic. Looking at this from an economic perspective only (ignoring the very real situation of many restaurant employees facing sub-standard to downright unacceptable working conditions), we have a system wherein employees are dealing with a less than minimum wage at face-value, and this problem is not solved, but is actually made perpetual through the belief that tipping will make up for it. The act of tipping covers up, masks, a much deeper serious structural problem (read: exploitation.)

Believe it or not, working in food service gives you skills for dozens of other industries that are in demand, at least pre-covid, and transitioning to a different industry is very viable. Lastly, taking a job as a waiter at a different restaurant would be better. Different organizations pay differently; have different wage systems, and the particularly good organizations in the industry don't pay tips, they pay at or above prevailing wage. So yes, owners would definitely notice that they lost all of the talented staff to better paying jobs in the same industry or for other industries.
Lastly, just get the balls to email your state senators and demand that they fix the labor laws allowing this scenario to exist. We don't need everyone in society to magically stop tipping one day, we need everyone to agree to legislatively fix the industry.
