Watching the Tip of the Hats stream was a really awesome experience. Seeing a group of people take something they love, and use that passion to raise money for those truly needed it was really inspiring. I mean, this is a group of people who came together because of a video game, and raised 35k for kids with cancer.

Up until now, I've been a pretty passive member of this community. I've commented a few times on some threads, tried to introduce a few people to competitive tf2, donated, all that stuff. But now, I really want to help. And i think I'm not the only one with this attitude, either. Plenty of people would love to help, but lack guidance or a goal.

So, my question is this: What can I do to make a difference, and to help this community grow?

The best thing to do is to spread the word. If you are a part of a pub community, ask if they can put a little message for the upcoming LAN or for Teamfortress.TV.

One thing that would help is that youtube videos on www.youtube.com/teamfortresstv get a lot of basic questions asked like: which hud is being used? why is there a wallhack? where can i find this map etc.

It would be helpful to have someone go through some old videos and answer some of those and continue for videos that will be updated in the future.

content production, not even joking

you want to help tf2? host tournaments, make maps, make site/game ideas into reality, creates funny/informative videos, write guides, work on a solid stream, use your inbred computer knowledge

and if its not content, it's spreading the good word of 6v6 jesus. ENCOURAGE WILLING PARTICIPANTS, call sponsors, call your friends, call your mom, promote things, give money

nothing makes me happier than finding a complete bad in MGE and explaining to him just how he can get started if hes interested.

Mostly what #4 said, learn to use Hammer (It's not really that hard, and free, I managed to make a shitty map once), grab Vegas and start making frag clips, get more people in the community, etc.

If you want to make the quantum leap from content to organization, you'll have to hit up Lange or Whisker Biscuit or any of the other awesome people who got Tip of the Hats working, they were completely swamped. Extra people helping them would have made the whole event flow better, because they wouldn't have a semiconscious Lange dealing with piles of spreadsheets, while having kurt talk for like 5 hours straight.

Spread the word, tell your friends.
Create content and be entertaining.

I know so many people at school and real life that think that TF2 eSports was and is a joke, but after showing them the charity event, as well as streaming what I do, many of them say that it's some of the best fun they've seen watching video games. Basically, just show people that TF2 is awesome, and it will grow.

Because it deserves it.

Er, this is a bad time to pick up mapping. Valve is about to kill access to the TF2 configuration of the SDK with the steampipe update, and no one knows what will replace it, or when it will be replaced.

I was always interested in running an offseason tournament for non-esea teams where the prize would be freemium. I tried a few seasons back but there wasn't enough people interested in helping. Maybe now that people want to help the community grow, I can actually make it happen.

Uh, can you elaborate on this? I'm in the process of making a map right now, and from what you said it sounds like all my work is about to be trashed.

That seems like a fantastic idea. I'd definitely try and help out to get something like that going.

I can't see how Valve could decimate mapping. Custom content is what's bringing in money, and people on games like L4D2, which is on SteamPipe, are still cranking out custom maps as fast as ever. Even if they have to be packaged into .vpks, the maps themselves are still .bsp's.

Keep working on that blog, looks amazing so far!

As for anyone else, I think one of the biggest things you can do to help is help out with Newbie Mixes!

I'd love to either help out with the tournament or participate in it. You should definitely do it, I think a lot of players need more tournament experience!

I'll start tomorrow (too busy ATM). Should the info be in a comment, or what? Seems like something like a FAQ in the description of each vid would be great, and I think you can't put links in YouTube comments.
