my friends often complain about it so I assume it's legitimate, but only one download out of maybe 10-20 are slow for me personally. I live in rural US as well so I'm not sure that it has to do with location necessarily

I think most or even all of the demos are stored on Hetzner servers in Germany. Some ISPs love to fight with them over bandwidth and refuse to set up peerings, causing slow speeds for that ISP's customers.
