im pretty sure this has something to do with my huds since i dont recall it happening with default hud, and im sure that i have it more frequently with certain huds than others. any help?

You can try to reduce CPU usage by trying out mastercomfig and setting lower priorities, but the increased CPU time of TF2 won't be harmful unless if it is constant CPU usage.
