World Chess Championship 2021

If anyone was interested, the 2021 Chess Championship match has started today and will possibly go until 11/14/21.

Magnus Carlsen vs Ian Nepomniachtchi

Match Page
Match Schedule

Should be a great matchup of different styles and will probably be more entertaining than the last one in 2018.
I have to predict for Magnus to win again. I still don't think the rest of the field has caught up to him yet and he hasn't lost anything in his play. Nepo is amazing no doubt and could find success doing things outside of standard preparation.

Magnus is a cut above, interested to see what he'll play with white. Game 1 wasn't too bad for a draw

zillydoes the format still go to tiebreaks in rapid if every game is drawn

The match consists of 14 games, and a score of 7½ wins the world championship. If the score is equal after 14 games, tie-break games with faster time controls will be played: 4 rapid games with 25 minutes each + 10 seconds increment starting from move 1. If a player scores 2½ points or more, he wins the championship.

It's a moot point really, everyone's going to have their favourites and how can you compare them fairly? Kasparov held the title longer than anyone else and is arguably the most consistently dominant player ever, Fischer could be seen as the most dominant any one player has been, but only for a very short time, but how do you compare them with Morphy, Alekhine, Capablanca, etc. etc. - all of whom would be destroyed by the top players of today, but in their time and at their peak were giants of the game.

The field of players continually gets better, building on the work of players of the past (and now obviously engines). There's just no fair way to compare them.

fischer has the best peak chess has ever seen while kasparov has been the best for the longest. although magnus is coming for that if he keeps this up. bobby fischer was something weve never seen before at his peak before he started loosing his mind

Game 6 going on right now easily the most exciting of the match so far. Magnus has a real chance for a win here but Nepo is just trying to survive.

edit: Just set a record for the Longest World Championship match ever recorded.

edit2: All over, Magnus win. What a fucking game, they are going to be talking about this Game 6 for a long ass time. Nepo was insane with his defense. I am tired as fuck this went over 7 hours.

this is a classic example of a magnus style victory. just grinded the fuck out of a theoretical draw until the guy makes one slip up and wins

I agree, a testament to his greatness no doubt. The constant computer evaluations are exactly what a lot of people think is so wrong with what chess has become. Some (not all) of the magic and ingenuity is being lost or not realized.

Relying on computer programs to train and teach the game. One thing it cannot teach is the pressure and human factor of actually playing the game. Stress causes fatigue and fatigue causes blunders. Mistakes are part of chess and there are way to many draws in today's game that would never have been accepted in past generations.

Viswanathan Anand was the first to truly put computers into his training and he got a lot of negative attention from observers and players alike. He was a preparation player and amazing in his own right but I dislike the computer aspect.

Yeah really close to over but you never know. Nepo can maybe play much more creative now because he has take chances. Just getting a win with the white pieces in Game 9 will change everything.

MoermanPlaying creative isnt really an option in classical chess, that's more of a blitz thing.

Generally true, no doubt. What I mean is nepo has to try to take magnus out of any preparation gameplay if possible. The only way to do that is with some creative thinking. More risky but what he is doing is clearly not working against Magnus right now and time is running out.

Honestly it's already over, Magnus needs 3 draws out of 5 games to win, 3 of which are white & it's very difficult to choke draws as white these days
