The toxicity in this game is as frequent as most other modern titles. What is different compared to lets say LoL or Valorant is that those games have a MUCH bigger playerbase so whilst you will encounter toxic people frequently, its incredibly rare to come against the same person twice in a single night, or even ever again. Plus these games have quick tools to mute or block them, preventing you from ever having to deal with them in the future.

TF2, comp TF2 especially so, does not have this luxury. Its very likely that you'll remember one or two individuals who really ruined your day and unless they get banned or you actively avoid them its inevitable that you'll see them again. The impact one person has on a players experience in comp play is far higher than in other games. Even worse are these circlejerks these people find which form groups big enough that you're always going to encounter someone from them at some point, which is especially bad if you are someone they've labelled as someone to target specifically.

Yet, that same system allows you to find groups or communities that are the complete opposite. Leagues or platforms have large power to prevent such individuals from competing on their sites, which by proxy can outright ban them from taking part in competitive play. So whilst each individual has more impact, they have more accountability. Ultimately its not a matter that TF2 is more toxic than other games, but rather about those you surround yourself with.

brodyu cite 4 guys as toxic but 2 of them are just straight up pedos and all 4 are already banned. what else did u hope to accomplish with this thread?

banning people from rgl doesnt mean they disappear from the community, they still pug and are still toxic

I want to give credit to the jumping community. I have seen people use hours on a tier 3 map, and when they finally finnish multiple people congratulate them on the run. People in the jump community also just likes giving tips for people to improve. Never experienced toxicity in a jump server.

Jumping is just inherently blame-free. Can't exactly blame your team if you suck at jumping. I guess you can blame your pc/connection/server/gaben but those who do that won't be very successful and not stick around for long.

Though at least on tempus there are top-50 and top-100 servers specifically because some top jumpers were very annoyed at having someone's 5 hour run keep the server on the same map

leave the community if you cant take the heat. this isnt some playground for children, this is Team Fortress 2. what else do you think happens in a hyper-competitive environment? do you want to be coddled? do you want people to give you a heart to heart when you die in game? no holding hands, no nice talk. this is a mans environment and you better get used to it or pack your fuckin bags and go roof houses.

I dont think a healthy competitive environment would make people super toxic or racist bro

Rockosciriosso this guy got cut cuz you moved up a div and he wasn't good enough for the new div, you didn't notice any toxicity on that team, but now he's making a thread about toxicity?
Honestly this thread wasnt super inspired by that team but I mean it all plays a part in it.

How old are you bud? I had a point in my life where I wasn't very good, was playing this game far too much and let a lot of shit get to me.. but to be honest with you bro it is all completely meaningless. If someone is genuinely a toxic asshole to you, mute them and if there is a report feature on whatever you're using then do so.. but hyper-focusing on things and watching a VOD of your team you just got cut from is just going to get you more upset about shit that doesn't actually matter.

If you enjoy the game, play it. If you don't (whether that's because of the game itself or the people in it) then step out and go do something else. Trust me, it's not worth continuing something that makes you miserable unless you fix what's making you miserable.. and it isn't gonna happen by doing this.

Before I played tf2 comp I was a valorant player (cringe!) and it is a significantly more toxic environment. In high ranks or w.e it's still not a ton of people, and assuming you play on the same servers roughly the same time, you do still see a ton of repeat names similar to tf2, yet unlike tf2, people often play Valorant as a hope for a career, which is not the case in tf2. This means basically every single pug/ranked game you even start to lose in valorant does the blame game any%, so it is a legit disaster every time you lose, potentially from pistol round even (first round of the game). Also, valorant games are typically much longer than tf2, so you're being held hostage by potentially degenerate players for 45+ minutes. Knowing this, tf2 is significantly better, since the environment, even at its worse, is more chill, at least in pugs. Scrims are different, but you have way more choice who you scrim with so I feel it's an unfair comparison.

Young_SanityRockoEvery competitive video game has toxicity.

TF2's seems to be specifically bad.

I've been playing tf2 since 2013 which i understand is a late entry compared to others. I'm not some famous competitive player, youtuber, streamer, whatever, but I do love this game.
It's been difficult to get into competitive and I know for a fact that many of my friends alongside people who used to play comp with me just dont want to touch the game anymore. Which just leaves me with so many questions.

If you're playing with toxic people, why? Isn't it better to try and grow as a player around other people who make you feel welcome and compliment your growth? If you're a toxic player, why? Does it make you feel good to belittle rando's online cause your life sucks irl?

Obviously this is addressing players that go beyond your usual smack talk in games, this is about harassment and true toxicity.

We are all part of an extremely niche community, if you decide to be a toxic person what you are telling everybody around you is "I want this game to die and I'm so obsessed I'm pumping in thousands of hours because I'm a no-life."

Can people please try to cut toxic people from their teams or discord servers. Me and all of my friends actively avoid toxic people and its working out pretty good for us but if you dont have access to teams or discord servers that cull awful people (or you are new to competitive and wanna try it out for the first time) it is extremely easy to run into rude people and instantly get turned off.

Anyways you can disagree with this all you want but idk felt like making a thread and hearing if other people in the community have experienced what I have.

Take care out there in this pandemic. Love you all!
Im extremely toxic. Im toxic if you arent putting in the same effort Im putting into a game. I know when to not cross the line at times but, at the same time you can just fucking turn off your monitor. I don't let toxicity affect me if I can most toxicity comes from shitters that are in an extremely low div.

Based young man.

This is the least toxic game i ever played, i played Dota 2 for many years in competitive and it's far far more toxic than TF2. I've been playing TF2 since 2010 on and off and the community is the nicest, nothing compared to the stress inducing community of Dota 2

all of you hating on me for stating facts... I learn from the best. Larry Bird was a trash talker, and one of the greatest to ever do it. Kevin Garnett, Tim Duncan, MJ. The list goes on. I take from those who understand that toxicity is a part of domination. You bunch of mary's want to high five the other team after getting 5-0'd? Go right ahead. I will be finding out where they live and exacting revenge. Don't start with me you little children.
