I really don't like scary games, but I decided to have some fun and play Amnesia: The Dark Decent. Some of you guys may been watching, but I thought this moment was pretty memorable.

In my experience, streaming made it less scary.

Man up and record it, THEN stream it.

FEAR was good, but it was almost all just jump scares. Amnesia and Penumbra before it were really good at building up tension, basically forcing you to do things you really don't want to do, simply because you HAVE to to proceed. Even after you figure out that the monsters are predictable and in Amnesia's case completely disappear from the face of the earth after not seeing you for a minute or two, the game just paces itself really well and doesn't completely burn itself out with one or two *big* in your face "scares." You're also much more vulnerable, in FEAR you're a super soldier who can slow down time and scissor kick people five football fields away to instakill them. In Penumbra you can barely fight, and in Amnesia you can't fight at all so you're only option when confronted with monsters is to run the fuck away and hide. Don't get me wrong, I loved the original FEAR and still do, but I feel that Amnesia is vastly superior in the Horror department. I don't really like the whole let's play culture that developed around it though, while it did provide the game with many deserved sales and is probably a huge contributor to the fact that a sequel is being made, but I feel that Amnesia is something that's best played alone in order to get the intended experience out of it.

All in all I love Amnesia, as a fan of old school survival horror games it's definitely the best horror game I've played in the post Resident Evil 4 era of horror games.

I felt FEAR 2 (dunno about 3) was more jump scares tbh. The first game was actually very akin to Japanese horror, focusing more on the tension building that you so liked in Amnesia & Penumbra. The sound effects in FEAR were so nope.avi inducing it was ridiculous.

I was completely contrary where, since I had nothing to protect myself, the game was a lot more predictable in itself and as a result wasn't necessarily "as scary" for me. It was funny that, despite having all this high-tech weaponry in FEAR, you could still get scared shitless and still feel near helpless, compared to Amnesia where the whole point is you have to go by with nothing.

When it comes down to it, Amnesia becomes just as predictable as any other horror game to be honest. It's like it almost uses some of RE's horror scheme - give you useless as fuck controls so when shit comes at you, you feel helpless. Eventually it kinda turns into run run run, hide hide hide, puzzle puzzle puzzle.

Once again, just me I guess. Despite some of my negativity towards it, the atmosphere was good and enjoyable, and I look forward to the sequel

Edit: it's the fucking ladder. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fo7HA7Y89XI when it first happened: "nope".

I thought Penumbra was scarier than Amnesia and FEAR, though all the games had their fair share of scary moments. The problem with Amnesia was, as mentioned, the monsters (most of them) disappear immediately after your first encounter with them. So you get the initial scare of seeing the monster, you hide for a while, and then you're relieved that it's gone. Penumbra had more of a sense of helplessness that come with constant patrolling enemies. I feel that stealth moments in general build tension and when you add horror elements to it those become the scariest moments.

Some of the really memorable scary moments in games came from games that weren't even horror games. The Shalebridge Cradle in THIEF: Deadly Shadows was one of the most eerie experiences I've played in any game.
