"half the content available for free to play" is a bit of a lie. you can play all the maps, sure, but the game literally doesn't let you equip gear above common rarity unless you pay 30 dollars

You can only use common or lower gear in normal lobbies which is all you have access to as a free account. The highroller lobbies which you have to pay for is where you can bring in your enchanted gear, so I'd say that's about half. Wasn't trying to be misleading, the normal lobbies are way better for learning the game anyway so I don't really see the issue?

there's virtually no point in playing if the loot you get doesn't matter unless you particularly enjoy the stiffest melee combat i've experienced in years

They just patched it so you can take gear up to Legendary into Normals
