i think AI (which 5 years ago was called "neural networks" and 5 before that was "machine learning") has use in corrective applications like doing screen replacements for movies and tv or whatever, or correcting your math homework or fixing your spelling and grammar automatically for your essay, but i think if you believe it has any genuine generative applications, like DALL-E and all that type of shit, you are a for real retard

if the best argument you could come up with in a month is "it allows me to do my joke white collar programming job faster, that's worth the energy footprint of entire countries, you just don't get it" then why even bother necroing

claude 3.5 is probably better than most wikipedia as of right now. of course it's partially built on it, so kind of cheating, plus the queries are energy-intensive.

i'm using it as a sort of neal stephenson-style illustrated primer. it'll be a while before it changes my life in any appreciable way.

remember that it's easy to hate things

is it really so surprising that people write ai off completely when most peoples exposures to "ai" are just shitty spam advertisements. Or generating a non-consenting persons likeness, including for use in pornography. Or all the underhanded attempts to get consent (or complete disregard thereof) to use peoples data to train models. Or see memes mocking some allegedly revolutionary chatbot utterly failing to grasp basic common sense. Or see their already trash insurance, internet, bank, etc company replace their customer service (which people already notoriously hate) with some shitty chatbot that serves as noting more than a hurdle to speak to an actual person. Or the fact that so many public advocates of the magic of ai look, sound, and act the same as crypto shills.
add on to the fact that the outputs of generative ai is often so bland and devoid of anything interesting that it seems like the most interesting thing about it is that a computer made it, a novelty which wears off extremely quickly.

dbki think cayorne above makes some really good points, but in response to his first question, AI has massively increased my productivity with debugging and writing menial code as someone working in software development. some of my coworkers use it for help with repeated tasks using templates, i know project managers and assistants who use other AI's to take notes in meetings, its great as a tool for saving the time spent on repetitive tasks in what are otherwise medium-high skill roles.

Exactly, that's literally all I'm saying...

Richarrrrdif the best argument you could come up with in a month is "it allows me to do my joke white collar programming job faster, that's worth the energy footprint of entire countries, you just don't get it" then why even bother necroing

Oh look, another edgy reply just being a little bitch while saying nothing, this surely was another memorable interaction my friend

YrrunfiabooLLMs alone have literally doubled my productivity rateyou didnt have to own yourself this hard in public

As soon as I wrote it I knew another stupid answer was coming, congrats.
Now, let me laugh my way to the bank because in my job more productivity = a looot more money. Thanks LLMs (and more than that), I guess I'll "own myself" extra hard on these tf2 forums by sharing it with you.

My job is not a blue collar job so I don't really know what AI can be useful for in that sector, I suppose everyone just sends each other ChatGPT created content constantly. If you guys think that's what I do and makes you feel better so be it.

Also, Cayorn did make some good points and I actually agree for the majority with him.
I am aware that AI takes a shit ton of energy, and energy is and will be one of the biggest problems and it's nowhere close to being sustainable.
I am aware that AI is a menace for artists. You would be surprised at how much earlier than probably 99% of you I knew of what was coming and of how many small artist friends I tried to warn. I also studied in an artistic field so my pain for what's happening is doubled.
I am aware many artistic jobs being at risk because of shitty AI-generated content(but is it really? are you sure you can spot the differences everytime?).
I am aware the world economy is going in a very shitty direction and the bubble is likely to burst.
I don't really expect anyone here to enlighten me on anything other than high level TF2, just spare me the obvious stuff, cause so far all I could read here was 'the sky is blue' my fellow gamers

I'm glad that you're aware of the numerous consequences of the continued use and expansion of AI, and that you've warned people about it. Surely your heightened awareness compensates for the copious and unsustainable energy consumption inherent to yourself and others' use of the tool.

shouldn't you be doing something else with your free time at work if you're such a forward thinking mastermind than waste time typing genuinely deeply angry sounding paragraphs aimed at us clueless luddites
