RGL got a newcomer div which i believe is similar to Fresh Meat cup, all about brand new league players playing against other brand new players

NA has much better onboarding for newbies in general with all their newbie pug groups afaik

I think this would be great for europe too

New HL season literally has a newcomer div (called "Fresh"). I agree though that some newbie pug groups would be great for onboarding new players, since currently it doesn't really exist. I spent much of last season and offseason mentoring a mostly completely new team to comp, and feel their pain in the difficulty of finding places to play.

Wandumsorry if im being dumb but isnt this literally the functionality of open

Open is the lowest div but its not restricted to new comp players

The idea here is a div restricted to completelly new players with little to no league experience like Fresh Meat Cup ruleset

  • Maximum 10 matches in ETF2L Open played
  • Cannot participate if you played in ETF2L Open playoffs or above, or above ETF2L Division 5.
  • Cannot participate if you played in UGC Silver or above (the number of UGC Iron or Steel matches will not be counted with ETF2L Open games).

it may feel less threatening for newcomers if they're told they're gonna play against other newcomers too, plus it would genuinely feel like a "new generation" of tf2 players rather than a mix of older open players and completelly new ones, and the influx of new players to the league could be easily measured

BenplI [...] feel their pain in the difficulty of finding places to play.

Most places I've seen over the years would happily accommodate them at least in some way. Most Euro's I've tried to work with flake pretty much every time. My speculation is that there isn't a large enough pre-existing history of on-boarding new players so those that have a little interest fizzle out because they feel isolated even with help. Maybe it's a viscous cycle.

I know Newbie Mixes and TF2CC would welcome them if there were EU coaches and runners respectively. There used to be an EU Newbie Cup alongside the NA one until the Euro staff just disappeared so it was consolidated to NA only.
