Thoughts on a new practice map?

I sort of had this idea for a new map, mainly catered towards anybody who mains demoman and would like to work on their pipe aim. To anyone who does main demo, you can understand how frustrating 1v1'ing a scout who has good strafing skills can be. The main idea is to have a room, sort of setup like tr_walkway. There you can use buttons to select the class, number of classes, and other options. You can then open a door or w/e and enter the main fighting room.

I understand this has been done before, but what I want to do to make it different is have the enemy bot shoot at you, making you flinch as though it was a real match, and strafing realistically. There could be different levels you could choose of strafing, as in have a low strafe where they just move side to side slowly and jump occasionally, moving up to more advanced ones you would see in MGE or matches. You would have unlimited health, so you could keep practicing, and sort of having the pressure of being shot at like you would playing, but able to keep going and working on your aim.

If this has been done before, please tell me and I will have this taken down. Otherwise, i'd really like to see some further ideas on this and ways to improve, possibly have it made.

I mean if you did make a bot with realistically good movement, it's still not actively dodging pipes. And if it is realistically, why not just keep dming?

tr_newbots

It isn't possible to have completely realistic bot movements, as the actions of humans are impossible to predict.

tr_newbots is sort of like this, except a little simpler than what you have in mind.

Either way, it would be nice to have something similar but with a bot that strafes for longer as well, because the newbot one only makes small strafes.

Edit: ninja'd by like 500 people.

If I understand what you are saying, it's to keep doing it. Often times in DM you will have some moments where you can truely practice your aim, but often you are being bombed or flanked and killed. I want to simulate the feeling of being shot at, flinching, but with the ability to keep playing and continue to practice timing.

I don't mean completely realistic, but for the advanced settings have the bot hop as often as possible, and possibly strafe in air as often as possible? Double jump often? Are these possible?

I'd assume so.

If I remember correctly, this has a room with bots that strafe back and forth, not sure if it has options though.

So if it's possible, then this could be at least of some use. Anyone have some additional thoughts on little things that could be added to make it stand out more?

Technically it might be possible to program a bot to have amazing dodging skills, but it would require that you have some kind of random number generator that corresponds with 360 degrees of movement. Then program it to always attempt to stay as far away from your crosshair as possible by choosing a direction at random and moving in that direction.

Then again, that might be a little too difficult. I dunno. I'm not a programmer.

That doesn't simulate human behaviour at all, though. There's no pattern to learn. It just makes it frustratingly difficult to hit.

4812622wait so what's the difference between this and mge / ammomod?

as many bots as you want, varying degrees of strafing abilities, NOT DYING, ability to keep practicing without having to pause to respawn and find the fight again.

I had the idea a while ago of having a bunch of good tf2 players rocket jump on flat ground, and try to strafe away from someone shooting them, like on the crates on badlands mid MGE. They'd do it a hundred or so times, and you would somehow record their movements. You'd then make the bots mimic their jumps and strafe pattern, and set it to randomize between 100 jumps.

I'm not sure if that would be silly and of no help whatsoever re getting better, but an interesting idea I guess.

Isn't this basically ammomod with bots? I guess there are some upsides to not having to play real players, but I don't think it warrants the work you'd have to put into this.

Why do we need to have these threads about getting better and making mods to attempt to accelerate the learning process when there are already plently of mods out there. If you can't hit a scout with good strafing skills in ingame, then you can either mge versus a lower skilled friend until you both get better, play tr_newbots and pipe the scout, play one of the other billion training maps or just PLAY THE GAME.

People need to stop asking people to make maps for them and help them with aiming etc and just play the game. I swear some people only want to be the best and don't even enjoy playing the game. YOU WILL GET BETTER. Just keep playing tf2... if you don't enjoy it then stop playing.

tl;dr YOU DONT NEED A MAP TO LEARN HOW TO PIPE A SCOUT ESPECIALLY WHEN THERE ARE TONS OF TRAINING MODS. PLAY THE GAME and you will get better

Don't know if this was directed at me, but I mainly thought of this to help new demos practice one of the most dificult parts of the class. Also, I never asked ANYONE to make a map. The title is "THOUGHTS" so it was just a discussion.

4812622wait so what's the difference between this and mge / ammomod?

Bots are better than the average MGE player.

But seriously, it's nice to have something similar to ammomod for when your net is acting up or you just can't find anyone to ammomod with (more likely).

i dunno man i'd take 90%-95% of my time spent on realistic practice rather than 100% of the time with unrealistic practice

not discouraging anyone from making one of these because i have an irrational hatred of losing in mge too
