At first, i thought it was shit. but like, it starts getting thought provoking later on. I know most of this community is in college, in high school, or too early in their careers of choice to really get moved too much by it. But, some times it's hard to look past yourself in the long term.
Just fucking watch it.

I read this speech in my rhetoric class a year and a half ago. Whats really interesting to me is how an 8-year old speech goes viral now.

Welcome to the internet. There's so much information, you can't pick and press all of it the instant it's posted. Hell, people still use happy negro from 4chan back in '07. And that's a shitty meme.

it's a lil melodramatic. "maybe she's been up for three nights holding the hand of her husband who's dying of bone cancer" "maybe their therapist says they need a giant suv b/c they've been in a horrible car crash" yeah maybe. but i'm pretty sure i can't spend all of my time coming up with soap opera scenarios for every annoying thing in my life

That's not really the point he's trying to make though. The point is when you view yourself as something apart from the rest of humanity and make assumptions about other people based on the little information you have about them, you often make life more miserable for them and yourself and perpetuate some kind of ignorance/hate/bigotry/uneducatedness that an educated individual shouldn't. You should use your education to consider the other person, not yourself. That's what I got out of it anyway.

yeah i got it. but it's still stupid. if the only way you can be empathetic is by imagining that someone's mom has cancer or is an orphan or that something catastrophic has happened to them then something is seriously fucked up in your head. i think it's much more humanitarian to be empathetic of banal normal things that cause people to act the way they do as opposed to this nonsense. it's a good concept but it's all warped and twisted the way he framed it. and he was fucked in the head so that explains a lot

Those examples just show how horribly incorrect assumptions we make of people can be, or how there is no capital T Truth in our supposed knowledge, as DFW may put it.

Also, discrediting someone's work due to a mental illness is seriously fucked up and is probably the type of thing this speech aims to steer people away from.

Chiiiiiiiiiillllllllll, I didn't discredit his work at all. Mental illness is all about connotative dissonance and twisted, for lack of a better word, logic. I think it's fucked up that it has to be a catastrophe. Anyone who's ever dealt with mental illness knows how much it fucks up your thought process

If you've never seen the great dictator dingo, you should check it out - it's a pretty excellent film - especially given the events that occurred during and immediately after the film's release.

Makes me wonder how far you can push pathos before it becomes ridiculous. Obviously some are okay with it, and others find that all the hypothetical melodrama makes the underlying meaning come across as forced and cheesy, regardless of whether or not they agree with it. I'm leaning towards the latter.
