Unlocks and effective strategies?

Has anyone had any successful/effective strategies with any of the unlocks that aren't normally used?

Is there a way to change up the current "metagame" with any of these unlocks and develop new ways to play in the 6s format or are these unlocks too ineffective for what you give up?

Care to share any success stories about using uncommon loadouts in a 6s game?

I've tried just fan jump and strafing in random patterns to delay a push.
It didn't work.
Edit: But is has in the past, I can't find any examples right now.

You can run an engie to mid on gully and set up a level 2 sentry on second point. I've used that for reverse picks and rolling into last after a fail push wipe.

The problem is, unlocks that would potentially "change the metagame" are usually banned.

This doesn't work against competent scouts. Soldiers and demomen are a different story. As much as people hate him, THIEF has decent/good/really good movement and is capable of tying up at least 2 people while just jumping around; I've done the same to a lesser degree in pugs. The fact that you can launch people across a midpoint with a meatshot isn't too bad either.

I've done Scottish Resistance defenses quite often (not as much as I would like though), and it's extremely useful against teams who like to kritz their demoman, for obvious reasons. The only problem with the ScoRes is that it's useless if you're pushing unless your team is capable of pressuring without direct damage from stickies, in which case you can just dump stickies behind them and wait for them to back into it.

Most offbeat strategies usually only work once against the standard 6's team though; its versatility is just too great.

running dh to mid can work, but its an all or nothing strategy. you hit the jumper for 150 and laugh hysterically or miss everything and wipe.

the problem is it takes a few shots (at least for me) to get used to the speed of the dh, so trying to surprise the other team with it is tough bc you dont get that luxury. i suppose you could dm for 10 min before a scrim/match and run it in the first round of the first mid and have more success with it.

also, using scottish to clear point stickies and doing a fast stack immediately after can work on maps like blands, but its way too high risk for the reward

Last season my team was able to get an Engie with a lvl 3 sentry on top of Gravelpit C to prevent spawners from getting to B.

There's also the concept of blocking crit stickies with the ScoRes, but it seems very hit or miss.

I saw a team run all Pain Trains in a scrim years ago on that one lumber-themed map with the badlands-esque mid and the greenhouse in the yard outside second. They let the enemy team cap mid and gambled on the fact that the enemy team would spread out to find where they were hiding and stacked mid. By the time the enemy team caught on, they were already on second and the scouts were going to last.

There was some talk of using the ScoRes on last pushes to eliminate stickies when I was last active but that extra arm time is a bitch, plus you can't jump too well with it. Wish they'd rework the downside to something else.

OH
Pain Train + Charge&Targe for Blands last was something that was fun and sort of viable if there were no fun vacuums on the other team, but since everyone runs a heavy/engie/pyro on last these days it's not even fun anymore, let alone viable.

Depends on how the item changes the meta. Most of them change it for the worse. Jarate causes the entire team to turtle until it wears off. Gunslinger makes it impossible for scouts to push out of last after a hold. A flanking scout with crit a cola can drop half the enemy team before they can even turn around. All of these were legal at one point, by the way. The meta is the way it is because it's tried and true. A lot of people who don't play comp seem to think it's because we ban everything and refuse to try new things.

The current metagame relies so heavily on number of players up and uber advantage. There's really not much that is going to change except for very situational map specific strats that only work a handful of times.

A couple seasons ago Sonmychest used FaN on Gravelpit and really took advantage of the increased vertical mobility defending C.
I also seem to remember a pocket using blackbox on Granary in IM finals a while back and was able to tank tons of damage.

Dead ringer spy disguised as his own teams sniper. Fake death, they assume they have advantage and then comes a stab on the med

Also engy strats can work depending on the map and/or skill level you are playing. Running an offensive engy for a last push can work in 2 different ways. Back in the day on fastlane a lot of teams would put up a lvl 3 gun on the enemy 2nd while pushing last, so if the push failed they could make an attempt at holding 2. This can still work today on a couple maps. Also running into last with a sentry can be effective as well. It's more of a fun cheese strat for pugs but I've done it a couple times in open and it worked as well (I wouldn't run it outside of open tho). Here's an example of the engy push. On granary, push left into last. Engy runs in with a lvl 2 (quicker to rebuild, a 3 takes too long) and throws it up on the big block with the tire. If the gun gets up and starts to fire it'll hit anyone on point or around it which is pretty much going to give you the round. If the other team spots the play they will have to focus the engy to stop the gun from going up, which lets the rest if your team do a lot of damage without taking much which is also very good.

I just remembered. You can bodyblock a kritz as a DR spy also. The confusion is just so entertaining, especially if you disguise as your own demo or med

or in a 6s match, disguise as demo, other team pushes in on pick, won't check for stickies. idk what leagues dr is legal in though.

It's harder to get away with faking a med/demo kill because they know the player by name and can check the scoreboard. Though some people might get caught off guard.

If you really wanna fuck with people, have everyone on the team get SSD's. Any time your med dies, he reconnects so someone can switch to med. THEN you go dead ringer in addition to having a faster med up.

you could just fake dying as a roamer/scout, let them roll in and backstab them.

Why would you be down a player for several more seconds? I can reconnect to a server faster than the respawn timer (and sometimes you don't even have to wait for respawn timers on reconnect).

Also @ Epoch, I was responding to the guy who said demo.
