For a casual viewer, things get quickly confusing with all the aliasing.
First mesr was just a "-", then "spacedog" is mason, and now they're saying that "joonna" is downpour.
Is there an easier way to figure this out? Is it just something I should live with? Perhaps casters can be more clearer in calling out aliases?

Avatars, who's on your friends list and who isn't, possible position they're playing, etc. There are a few ways that may help you figure out easier

easiest way is to go to their esea profile and click the 'history' tab.
It gives all their previous used esea aliases, which usually includes their most known one.

You just have to live with it.
Some players love to change their name.

I don't have invite players on my friend's list.
I've seen some of my own friends do that, but I feel that I'm just bothering them needlessly when I'm almost certainly not going to talk to them anyway.

The players aliasing are just basically making life a lot harder for the casters. It's kind of a lose/lose for them. For example, if someone casting always refers to mason as "spacedog" then the people who are already familiar with competitive TF2 scene will be like "who the fuck is spacedog" while on the other hand you can't alienate potential new viewers by casting with names that the people aren't aliasing by. If you're saying "mason" and he's not aliased as mason then people will just be really confused.
The players are just having fun with aliases, but for the sake of casting you should probably just stick with one alias at least for ESEA matches. I can't think of another popular game that has this problem. I alias all the time but my ESEA name remains consistent, and I think that's true for a lot of other games, I've never seen players change their names in tournaments and casted matches as much (or at all) as TF2.
If you haven't noticed I'm really bored so I'm making tons of huge posts today.

This is the easiest way, except mason for example has only used his real name once, and he has even used grape.

reminds me of casting im playoffs last season when all of ostrich poachers changed their names to some different kind of STD. that was fun. anyway yeah i dont understand peoples fascination with changing their alias to some kind of injoke that only they get. nobody else cares about it and it just makes it harder for everybody else.

ETF2L has a nice rule for this. Players in prem submit a name in the beginning of the season that they have to use in every match. I presume ESEA could have something similar in no namechanges during season if you're Invite or something.

I honestly think the ETF2L rule is a good one which should be applied to ESEA, too. makes casting easier and makes understanding the game/teams easier on newer viewers.

The worst is when two players will swap aliases for a match.
I really never understood why this is so exciting for players to do other than that they are trying to get a laugh out of, "oh I bet they will call me the wrong name, won't that be hilarious?". No. I'm fine with name changes, or having similar names like in the legendary craig-smith lineup, but swapping names with another player is just annoying and problematic.

Isn't there a simple way to get a server to assign a different name to people based on Steam IDs? I've seen a bunch of pub servers where admins could assign names to people, where offensive names are automatically changed, etc. It might be a Source Mod, but I would think that it wouldn't be very hard for ESEA to just clamp names at the start of a season. Don't they already limit name changes to a certain number per month?

To be fair, Downpour's real name is Jonah.

esea servers automatically add the tag and the esea name of the user connecting. however you can change your esea name whenever you want.

aliasing in an ESEA match is kind of silly. especially if you're the new hotness in town like downpour(joonna). you have to think about branding, baby. some viewers/fans will only tune in to a match to spectate their favorite player. why make it difficult on them, the casters or any potentially new comp players?
however, i agree that aliasing outside of matches is sometimes necessary as unwanted attention in pubs/pugs/mge can get annoying.

Not for all that long, and it doesn't invalidate his point.

I remember watching a DOTA match where the game was literally paused until one of the aliasing players changed their name back to what they had registered as. It probably won't be enforced by ESEA, but I think the community should take it upon itself to ease up on the aliasing, not just invite but intermediate and open as well.
It's always been a pet peeve of mine. I had to explain to some people new to competitive TF2 what aliasing was and what their actual names were. I dunno, it's kind of dumb.

i guess ill just spell my name backwards or add carats or somethign :<
OK just for you i switched it to masonarium i hope this does not further confuse you in mathches
