watching dota and sc2 and lol and whatnot i wonder how they can have sooooo many viewers and players when matches like i46 and last night's game are literally amazing shot after amazing shot. there's far fewer slow moments in tf2 than in moba games. really don't understand what's holding us back :/

i think its simply because the newer games appeal to the younger gamers, you cant really hit the top of games like cs, quake, tf2 etc unless you've had experience playing for a long time. this probably draws away new comers more than anything. if someone just picked up a game like league of legends they would probably have a chance of playing at a higher level than just picking up cs and starting out at the bottom. i know all games require intense thinking, but shit lets be realistic here i think it takes a lot more practice and dedication with fps...if u get rusty or take long breaks your dm suffers pretty bad and most players will just pass you up.

dota and starcraft have scenes 10+ years old while lol is massively promoted by riot (aka they spend $$$ to get leagues to host their game because it's not good enough on its own merit). TF2 has none of these things. TF2 was also unfortunate to come out right around the time that shit shooters (cod) were becoming massively popular: this type of gameplay isn't appealing to the general audience anymore.
FPS is also much harder to spec than RTS. Every time I watch a TF2 cast I'm mostly watching the kill tracker and the health bars because the camera usually watches something irrelevant. And that's not usually the caster's fault: TF2 has so much shit going on in many different places that it's really not possible to capture all of the action.
Comp TF2 is also so much more different than pub TF2. When I play a dota match I play more or less the same type of game that the top players do. When I pub TF2 it's nothing like 6v6. dota/starcraft/lol players can more easily follow the comp scene and also look up to the comp scene because they essentially play the same game. In most pubbers' eyes we are elitist no fun no item final destination faggots who ban everything and hate spy.

In general nobody wants to watch 30 minutes of slow, methodical, well timed pushes. You'd have to be VERY into the game to understand and appreciate watching that, and you need a good eye to be able to spot WHY things are happening. I'd go as far to say that most of the TF2 community wouldn't find watching 6's entertaining except when watching something like i46 where you're somewhat emotionally invested in the teams that are playing; other than that, I just wanna see frag movie worthy events.
I think that's why fighting games will be the ultimate game to stream. Matches last a couple minutes, they're easy to watch, it's easy to understand who is winning and who is losing, and watching people pull off crazy ass combos and make awesome comebacks that happen in a matter of seconds makes for a hell of a spectator sport.
Also yesterday the championships broke 500,000 at one time, so that's pretty cool. I think regardless of whether you hate LoL or not, we should embrace it. Anything that brings more sponsors and money into competitive gaming makes me happy.
It's more that competitive fps as a whole is dying, I mean look at cs and quake nowadays. Everybody I know irl has pretty much played a moba whether it be lol or dota and next to nobody has ever played quake before. The extent of most people caring about fps now only goes as far as the newest cod or halo game and they play them on consoles.
A big difference is the game you play in LoL and Dota are exactly the same as the one played at the top level. No one plays 6v6 in a pub.

i think new viewers would have an easier time understanding tf2 than they would a moba game. the learning curves for those are fucking ridiculous.

DotA was an investment. Putting that money into it really started it off strong, since it would pull a profit. Doing that to TF2 would just put them $1 mil in the hole.
#7 an extreme minority care about being good at video games. aside from that cs/tf2 are easily approachable games.
fps is a played out genre that's been around for almost 20 years now. when you innovate a new genre and people love it, there's less people scattered across games.
the big difference between the 20 years ago is constantly producing lots of new content rather than making new titles every few years. each new title splits your community, making those sub-communities more likely to switch to a new game of the genre. This is why the old generation of fps games died off, but giants like wow continue to dominate the mmo market and league/dota will always dominate the team rts market despite games like titans/smite trying to ride the coatails and free money of a new genre.
It's more than just gameplay that affects why these games are popular; it's the ease of getting into it.
Let's say you're just starting League for the first time. You load up the client, make an account, and go through a quick tutorial. You don't really understand the game at this point, but you've got a rough idea of the controls and are put into a queue that matches you with 9 other new guys so you can get right into the game.
It's a three step process: 1) sign up 2) do the tutorial 3) play the game.
Breaking into Team Fortress 2? I don't even know where to start these days. The game's free to play, so that's cool, but as people have mentioned, pubbing and competitive are two completely different games. If a player wants to get into competitive, there's no easy way to do it. There's no tutorial mode at the start, there's no matchmaking for 6v6, there's no in-game way of playing with other new guys; essentially, unless you know somebody or happen across a game cast, there's no easy way to start playing comp. TF2.
The newbie mix guys are doing a great job, eXtv and the other streaming guys do a lot for games and highlander, but because there's no support from Valve, there's no easy way to attract the gigantic fanbase of TF2. As for learning the game, it's no harder than anything else; I'd say Starcraft and DotA are incredibly more difficult to pick up. But because there are in-game ways to play and get better, people just won't play the same game we do.

I watched the stream for a bit just to see how it actually is at the top and dear lord, it was not fun.
The awkwardness from every single player was just painful to watch. The terrible pun. Also, like 3 gank kills throughout the entire game and all the rest is 2 teamfights.

Watching aggressive laners, high level cheese, constant ganks/jungle control and map control is pretty fun. Then again you may be right; 500,000 people are watching the wrong game while 5,000 at one point were watching the right game.
