My phone doesn't have enough space to put all my music on it, and I'd like to be able to listen to all of my music in one place with good battery life. What do you guys use? I've been looking at the new iPods but can't help thinking there must be other options. I also run a lot so it'd be nice to have something easily used for running and can track miles.

I have a used 3rd generation ipod nano that my friend gifted me back in 2009. Still serves me as perfectly as the day it was bought (I assume, since I didn't have it then) after the 10000th time I dropped it and sat on it and crushed in under my fat ass

Old reliable

I used to use the sansa clip with a 16gb memory card, and it was great. Only like $50 bucks for the two, can play FLACs, good battery life, pretty much all I need. But eventually it broke and I got an ipod touch.

Ipod classics are unbreakable bricks, the earlier generations are pretty cheap (40-50 dollars) and can have a lot of storage (20-40 GB).

your best bet may be to pick up an old phone from either a friend or on ebay or swappa (android) -- run cm10.1 on it and go from there

Small, cheap, and expandable memory is all you really need.

I'd shy away from iPods, as that really marries you to itunes. (you'll have to buy all your stuff in AAC on the itunes store, which doesn't have great support; also a real drain on system specs)

In my experience, iPod classics break after 9-12 months of regular use (been through 4 of them). Given the classics have moving parts (and especially if you're running with it regularly!), the nano's are preferable. After you get a replacement, the warranty is only 90 days, which isn't great. Perhaps I have just had bad experiences. Also, I've never felt the need to carry around my entire library, but perhaps others do.

Cowon make some really sexy mp3 players, but they are quite expensive. iirc they do support aac (one of the very few that do) so would be a good transition if you have used iPods exclusively beforehand

I have also heard good things about the sansa clips.

I've had a 160GB iPod Classic for quite a while and haven't had any problems with it.

I loved my Zune, but it died and they no longer make them.

When I was shopping around for a big storage mp3 player the only option I really was left with was the iPod Classic. It's nice and all but if you can find an alternative for cheaper you're probably better off.

I decided to get a Sanza Clip Zip ($35) and a 64gb microSD card ($45) for it. Thanks for the suggestions everyone, helped a lot.
