I was there for a half hour of this in a utility ship that was ultimately useless. I say useless because it's a ship that does a really good job of preventing your enemies from running away, but since our side was losing the fight massively, the enemy didn't really WANT to run away.

Some background - I play for the reddit-based TEST alliance about once a week. The Clusterfuck Coalition (CFC, headed by the SomethingAwful-based Goonswarm) has been invading TEST's space and pulling bigger numbers for every fight. This battle was set up not as a real defensive objective for TEST, but as a "last hurrah" to provide a good means of closure for TEST, who's lost the war at this point.

Also, Skyride plays in TEST so make fun of him for being as big of an internet spaceship nerd as me.

They slowed down the time clock to 10%? I find that the most insane part.

It's better than the alternative, which is for anybody past the 400th person to just black-screen and never be able to activate anything on his ship.

Time dilation (TiDi) was introduced last year as an automated, equitable lag-compensation mechanic. 10% TiDi is normal for fleet fights of 750+.

Aww, this makes me miss Eve. My character is pretty old as well, I just don't have the time and money anymore.

I found a good way to play only one hour a week and still have a lot of fun. I fly only interdictors, and I fly them for an alliance big enough to have a 100% replacement program for them. When I see a global ping on jabber for a fleet that looks interesting and I have an hour or two to kill, I'll join it, deliberately fly as risky as possible, die, and be satisfied that I bubbled something. Then I just request reimbursement, get a new dictor, rinse and repeat whenever I have free time.

It definitely makes sense, but I never thought of it being actually used in an MMO setting. That's what's pretty cool to me. I mean once there's over 750 clients connected I'd imagine the processing power can't be enough on a single server instance.

My brother played EVE for quite a while, and it was so slow I couldn't watch even though he was involved in some huge ops. I've always been more interested in CCP and how they solve problems, expand, communicate with their player base, and such rather than the actual game. Fascinating company.

Yeah, the TiDi makes it unwatchable. Everything happens in slow motion. The only reason to subject yourself to that level of lag is if you're interested in being part of a "momentous" battle of some sort. "I was there, EVE is real" stuff.

Even as slow as things were going, I knew it was gonna end badly for us when our 5 fleets warped into the middle of their 8. They were positioned in a perfect sphere around our station, where they could apply maximum damage in any direction. Our fleets all arrived at once, balled up, in the enemies' optimal range. It was not a battle we planned on winning.

Yep, that pic is what it looks like with the "all objects" tactical overlay enabled. Normally, you reduce the clutter on-screen by filtering out player-launched drones, and any shiptypes you don't care about shooting or watching.

I used to play a lot several years ago. Turns out, running a 1000-player alliance is a lot of work and it took too much of my time, so I stopped doing it. I got back into it a couple months ago to do what I said above, play 1 hour a week.

I must say I miss that game a lot. If I were to go back to it I would have to stop playing any other games competitively and just play that. It was really fun tho.

What's the point of playing 1 hour a week? Just to maintain your skill queue in case you decide to play more sometime down the road?

No, it's to enjoy flying interdictors in big fights. I just don't have to commit the amount of time that I used to, but I still get to fly one whenever I want, which is a nice thing for me. It's turned an MMO into the equivalent of logging into TF2 and playing a few rounds, which I always thought was not a good way to play MMOs.

SalamancerAlso, Skyride plays in TEST so make fun of him for being as big of an internet spaceship nerd as me.

:(

Shit man, I was there too flying logi. Tidi is fine when its actually 10% :P. Was taking like 2 minutes irl time to lock a target, then your reps would take like another minute to actually start cycling. I ended up just putting reps on the drone trigger and browsing reddit for 2 hours. :P

EVE is a fun game.

And yeah, the way Sal plays is totally viable. Aside from earning money, there's no grinding in EVE, so there's no real requirement for time input. You only ever do something because it's fun or because it makes money (which in of itself is a fun process).

Randomly hearing Sals voice with a different nick while guessing if it was him was a pretty surreal experience.

I just like hearing fleet commanders call my name, so I volunteer for scouting and suicide duties often.

"Ok, Farmstink, what's in the next system?"

huehuehue

edit: Also, your avatar on the test forums is the same style as mine. I took the googly-eyed thrasher. Obviously, our tastes are influenced by TF2/Twitch a little too much.

revenge of the edit: ALSO, I hate grinding for anything. That hatred started when I read about the psychology of the Skinner Box and other addiction mechanics as they pertain to video games. Two things about it really turn me off: 1) that companies know these psychological mechanics and are blatantly using them; and 2) that grinding doesn't actually light up pleasure centers of the brain. Rather, it lights up hoarding/collection centers, which are closely associated with addiction, but not fun. So long story short, I deliberately gave up on grindy bullshit a long time ago for philosophical reasons.

bride of the edit: ADDITIONALLY, if you were taking 2 minutes to lock things, are you sure you weren't sensor-damped by 15 FuckYouFleet Celestises?

The Goons ruin everything fun in Eve :( I stopped playing years and years ago but reading about all this brings back good memories. Its pretty awesome when the big 0.0 alliances flex their muscles. Too bad this one didn't go your way Sal. Good luck finding a corp that is getting into big fights for you every week.

TEST is still around, there will still be big fights. We just lost one of our two regions. And Goons didn't really ruin much of anything - they gave and will continue to give a lot of good fights. Also, their leadership structure is superb. Good diplomacy with their allies, good strategy overall. They deserve to be smug about winning :P

CCP should take a page out of Valve's book and let you add customizations to your ship. You could have some be as simple as a paint job, others be misc-type items like googly eyes or shark teeth for specific ships.

If they added these items as an optional graphics package (something you can turn on and off to mess with performance, like the rest of the gfx settings), I don't see why it couldn't happen.

Nope. Was like, you'd get the 2 sec lock timer, then you know the flashing LOCKED thing it does, it'd sit at that for a solid minute irl time. All the guys in DPS ships were having the same problem. You and your silly bubbles!

...And if you showed a non-TF2 player a picture like this, they would react the same way. Kind of trite to hear all the "lol idk what is this" coming from a fairly hardcore gamer site.

EVE is complex, but those pictures are just pictures of starships and their effects. Some shoot lasers, some repair each other. The pictures actually don't do a fantastic job of displaying this, just like the picture I linked does a poor job of showing how TF2 is played.

SalamancerSome background - I play for the reddit-based TEST alliance about once a week.

Don't even understand HOW you could stand being in test for more than 6 months at a time.

I wasn't really there for the fight but I've been paying attention to everything pretty closely. Can't log in because I'm on an extended vacation but that's aside the matter. Honestly as far as the war goes, TEST needs to do something as their INDIVIDUAL separate entity. Being ex-TEST, and a long time player, I can pretty much tell you test has never taken any solo venture that's turned out the way it's supposed to.

Anyway, j o i n p i z z a. Awoxing guarantees citizenship.

Can we please at least leave the pathetic internet dick flailing to EVE-specific forums?

Also Zwolf, you can't have been paying attention very closely. We publically announced that we were giving up on defending Fountain right after the 6VDT fight and started moving our stuff back to Delve within hours.

Drop sov move to NPC null. You still have commitments while holding (unprofitable) space. Adjusting leadership could be a bad move in those circumstances if goons want to push into delve. Just my 2cents but point is delve is a bad option ect. ect. ect. would be cool for you guys to stay there for us to get some free carrier kills. I know you were moving to NOL tho, I got 2-3 pings when it was announced.
