So I'm stuck on my macbook pro (shoot me now) for a little while (on vacation and also without internet for long periods of time) and I've been spending the hours in the middle of the night when I can't sleep (when I usually play tf2) making custom crosshairs and new configs and stuff. I was fiddling around with GIMP (basically a free photoshop) to make images to use as crosshairs.
However, now I'm running into trouble converting my crosshairs into vtfs and vpks as the GIMP vtf plugin and VTF edit are custom executables and don't work on my mac. Any easy way to convert my crosshairs into vpks and vtfs so I can use them in-game? If not I could always upload the images themselves and people can convert them with photoshop if they're interested in what I've made

It's shit
tl;dr: is there an easy way to convert images to vtfs/vpks on a mac?
Thanks for the help, and sorry for the long-winded explanation.

Basically, no. You gotta run windows with something like VMWare/bootcamp.

Can you run them with wine? The normal vpk .exes and vtfedit

I'll give wine another try, previously hasn't worked but I'll see.

I can't stress to you enough how much I think you should install windows via bootcamp. Macs can run windows beautfully. The hardest part is finding a windows install disk or an ISO file. After that it's as easy as 1-2-3. Osx has a native application called bootcamp assistant and it virtually installs it for you as it guides you through the process. I know this isn't a quick and dirty fix but once you have windows on your Mac you can have the best of both world's and things will be easier.

Well there you go mr brolo. Looks like you have all the tools you need at your disposal.
One word of advice. When [if] you decide to do this, make sure you create enough space on your windows partition. When I first installed windows on my mac (I place tf2 on my mac, on windows) I made the mistake of making my windows partition too small - only 80gb. I don't know how big your hard drive is, and how much free space you have. But make sure you allot enough space, and consider your use on down the line. You may just be using this for certain tasks, so you may not need a lot of space.
Either way though, if you ever need more space on your windows partition, it's actually really easy to increase the partition size. You don't even have to reformat. Using the handy bootcamp assistant application in OSX, you literally just use this slider bar to increase the size.
I'm probably speaking way too far ahead of myself lol. But anyway, good luck.

Wow thank you guys so much for all of this. I had no clue that installing windows on a partition was so easy. Thank you loads for that link jp_, I'm going to begin installing windows 7 on my mac as soon as I have the time. Now I can finally use direct x! I really do appreciate this.

No problem man.
You will be amazed at how well Windows can run on your mac, and even more amazed at how well tf2 runs in Windows vs OSX.
After you install Windows, if you need help making your copy of Windows "genuine," feel free to add me on steam.

Allright I might take you up on that! I can't wait to run a playable version of tf2 :)

What model of MBP do you have? What are the specs?
I have a 2011 15" MBP
8gb ram
6750m radeon 1gb ram
Regular HDD 7200rpm - 500gb
i7 2820qm with 8mb L3 cache
Runs tf2 @ minimum of 130 fps.
I had a problem for a long time; about a year after I had it, my fps in TF2 started dropping, and continued to drop, until I had on average 50 fps. I fixed this by taking the MBP apart, cleaning it, and applying new thermal paste to the shitty job that Apple did when they put their shitty paste on my cpu and gpu cores at the factory.

mine's also 2011 macbook pro
2 gb ram (fml)
i have no idea what any of my other computer specs are, looking through system profiler atm but have no real clue where to find other specs. regardless, tf2 runs at high fps but very stutterily and inconsistently. looking forward more to a smoother game (hopefully)

Windows would definitely run tf2 better, but you should really look into upgrading your ram. You don't have a lot of RAM to run video games, but I'd said having at least 4gb would give you more head room and would definitely help in other ways.
I don't think ddr3 ram is that expensive anymore either.
Should look into it.
Easiest way to look up your specs, is to get your model/serial number. Type that into google, and it should return a link to your mbp with all its specs. Easiest way to get that number is to click the apple at the top left of your screen, go to "about this apple" or something like that. If the first set of information isn't your serial number, click the area inside that box, it'll change what info it displays. Keep cycling through until you find your serial number.
But anyway, the big reason I wanted to know your specs, is so I could give you an estimate of what kind of performance you can expect out of it once it's running windows.
