didn't know people used vegas for editing anymore, thought most people did it in premier/after effects.

I do a combination of the two.

If you could somehow survey all the editors in the tf2 community I bet you'd find the large majority still use vegas. In terms of simplicity and the learning curve it's still probably the best program for beginners.

Since you're using Vegas, my guide is for you - http://teamfortress.tv/forum/thread/3521-how-to-make-videos-for-tf2

Though you can do some things in AE that you can't do in Vegas, the majority of stuff you can do in AE, you can do in Vegas easier. It doesn't take a whole lot to make a video for TF2 that will be awesome in the eyes of its audience. Regardless of what you use, if you can make that awesome video, what you use doesn't matter.
Rekuso, if you ever need any help, just message me on Steam whenever I'm on.

bearodactylholy shit vegas looks so overly complicated
Vegas is really clean, it's hard to put many functions easy accessible into an applications and Vegas does this well. Any application looks complicated if you resize the window that small.

I think it's either what thee5orrow stated or youtube's x264 encoder doesn't like the file you gave it. (I'm presuming because scene changes)

Instead of masking, you could've also have used this:
http://www.mzzt.net/tf2/
I've used it in the past to replace black banners with white ones for recording from STV
