Types of aim- how do you aim?

Well, I've been playing TF2 for about a year or two now, and I'm now working on getting into comp. I'm just wondering how people classify their aiming, how they define it.

From what I've seen, aim in fps games is two dimensional.

The first axis is:
Strafe aim vs mouse aim

Which is pretty self explanatory.

The second is a bit more nuanced, which is:
Tracking vs twitch/'flicking'.

I personally play soldier as my main class, and my aiming style leans towards mouse-aim with a tracking focus- I aim by tracking the player I'm shooting at and slightly leading the shot. This is contrary to a lot of other soldiers I've seen, who seem to focus on getting amazing flick shots.

So, tf.tv forumgoers, how do you classify how you aim?

This isn't the answer you're looking for, but most people with really good aim I've encountered dont have like, some deep methodology behind it. They just look at it as hitting their shots in whatever way necessary.

As for flicks, a lot of times, people just actually consciously aim really fast, and it gets mistaken for flicking. Actual "flick shots" are a product of muscle memory.

First there is also what part of your body you use to aim, some people aim with their arm, I use my wrist only, this means I have quite a high sens where moving only my wrist allows me to do it.

Besides that my aim type grew naturally on me and it depends on the class.

For heavy I use pure tracking for example, and it works really really good, despite heavy being my least played class (10 hours) I feel my heavy aim is probably one of my best class aims.

For demo which I main, well it's basically pipe aim, it works a bit like rockets but not entirely the same, I tend to get twitchy aim on close range targets. But it depends on my flow, sometimes I'm hitting 4 in 4 pipes, while other times I can fail 4 pipes against a medic in front of me.

For soldier I use a mix of tracking and twitching, but I notice when I start to get a bit more stressed on mge or dm I tend to start twitching too much and not really tracking, which isn't necessarily bad because some times it works, other times I just have to take a deep breath and really concentrate and focus where I want to hit instead of mindless twitching. When I do use shotgun I tend to twitch like a mad man vs scouts, because those bastards can't keep steady, I still have pretty bad shotgun aim against scouts tho. Against heavy targets if it's a 1v1 and I'm being pressured I tend to twitch and use the best reaction time I can to land those shots when the mouse is over. If I see they are out of ammo, or not pressuring me I take my time and I usually land every shot over 70 dmg on close range.

I feel twitch aim and flick aim is different or at least I want to say I have 2 different types of twitch aim. Since I aim with my wrist I usually twitch only with it, however sometimes in the heat of the moment or from pure muscle memory I flick my entire arm and hit a crazy shot overhead or 180 degrees behind me, those are the hardest shots to hit for me and the ones that make me proudest.

For scout, well since I have quite a high sens it's all about reaction time, I twitch a lot so I try to react as fast as I can on the mouse over targets, it's not very reliable but it works.

For sniper well, it depends, I aim for the general are where the target is, if they are long distance and I am not being pressured I tend to be patient and track a lot until I feel confortable to land my shot and I think I'm going to hit. For close range targets or when I'm being pressured a lot I tend to aim for the general area of their head and some miliseconds after scoped in I twitch based on my prediction from what I saw, it's really a lot of hit and miss on close range targets.

For pyro I put a rock on my W key and just hit M1 until my ammo is over or I die.

Used to only use my wrist to aim, and my hitscan was fucking dreadful. Recently started using my arm to move the mouse and it makes everything much smoother - the upside is that my hitscan has improved almost overnight but the downside is that I don't seem to have that same muscle memory for quick rockets. Still hitting well, and better from long/mid distance but less quick shots.

I tried playing without a crosshair or viewmodel on scout for a brief period (when that no-hud exploit came to light last year). Hitting twitch meatshots with the scattergun wasn't actually any harder than with a crosshair, but tracking with the pistol was impossible.

Also I find twitch shots to be so much easier with a 120 Hz screen.

Can't beat perfect tracking for an impressive spectacle though, especially on scout where your own position is changing so rapidly.

I kinda track then flick if I need to hit a quick shot, on projectile classes I also sometimes just flick. I usually strafe aim whenever I don't need an amazing dodge for hit-scan, I see no reason not to when all you need is to be sure to hit your shot since it's more reliable for me personally. Trying to improve my tracking because it's really cool feeling when you track well and it improves my scout and sniper so much.

well yeah, tracking is more reliable than twitching, the problem is, tracking is a pain in the ass, I mean, with enough practice you will eventually get it, and it's quite easy on slower classes, like heavy, but on faster classes like scout or tracking faster classes as sniper for example it's not easy and you will find yourself missing more than when twitching sometimes.

Also tracking is much easier with a low sens so, players with low sens will probably be able to track better than ones with high sens, independent of the practice you get.

How was the transition from wrist aim to arm aim? Probably you had to lower your sens as well when making the transition or not? Really curious about this as I have always used my wrist and tried my arm a few times and it's really scrappy, can't hit anything.

Most people do both track and flick. The more you track the less you need to flick before your shot. It's simple physics.

Using wrist or arm is more based on what your sensitivity is and what you're comfortable with.

Also your grip, and consequently the shape of your mouse and hand. Also your posture in orientation between your shoulder and mouse.

I only did it just after lan so I've been playing like this for a week, and I already feel more comfortable this way. My sens was already faairly low for a soldier, 21.3cm/360. I didn't change it but the main difference is how much lower it feels because you're moving everything more smoothly. You have more control with your arm basically, but if you can't hit stuff with it don't bother, it's just personal preference at the end of the day.

I aim mainly with my wrist but I have a very low sens(like 12ish inches/360. Is it bad to have this low of a sensitivity and aim with my wrist? Will I develop any health problems if I continue to do this?

Man, I love the concept of aim so much I could probably write an essay on it. There are so many kinds and forms of aim that it really boggles my mind, in the end though, nothing will be as impressive to me as tracking in its purest form. So many factors add towards aim; posture, mood, arm/wrist, mouse grip, your grip, even latency (I find anyway). I've been working on "improving my aim" for years now, every time launching tf2 with the hope of achieving the perfect tracking. Only recently have I started seeing results I'm happy with, but even then I could be better.

There is no "right" kind of aim, it all works differently for different people. Some people are amazing with twitch, tracking, and the weird-as-fuck "wobble aim" (can't find the video right now sorry mates). Whatever suits you and you find comfortable will eventually work. HOWEVER, I find sensitivity to be a non-factor. I wouldn't even say you have to keep the same sensitivity for a long period of time to have great aim. Over the past few months I've gone through roughly 5-6 different sensitivities, testing them all out, and each time it took less than an hour for me to notice my aim has gotten on-par, or better than, how my aim was before changing sensitivities. I don't really know why this is, so if someone can enlighten me, I'm all ears (eyes).
