So.... My tf2 just crashes right to desktop. I receive this error message in the console right before it goes to desktop:

KeyValues Error: RecursiveLoadFromBuffer: got } in key in file (null)
items_game, items, 245, 1, (*visuals*), (*use_per_class_bodygroups*), (*cannot trade*), (*value*), (*3*), (*name*), (*model_player_per_class*),
KeyValues Error: LoadFromBuffer: missing { in file (null)
(*community_market_item_remaps*), (*Decoder Ring*), (*Nice Winter Key 2012*), (*2*), (*quickplay_type*), (*tags*), (*map_has_deep_water*), (*conditions*), (*0*), (*required*), (*model_player_per_class*),
**WARNING** Failed to apply item schema!
Required key "attributes" missing.

What I have tried:

Verifying Integrity - Completed to 100% in the standard way after a few attempts no dls
Restarting steam
Restarting PC
removing all custom CFGs and Huds

Help? lol

When does it crash? Demo playback? Server initial join? Random?

It just loads the main menu (I've got my console set up to immediately display which is how I see the error message in the console) it will function normally for approximately 10 seconds and crash right to desktop with no error message - if I attempt to load a demo or join a server within that 10 seconds it immediately crashes to desktop with no error message.

usually the time it takes to troubleshoot the problem and find the culprit is longer than just re-installing the game. have you tried re-installing TF2? obviously saving media, maps, replay, screenshots, your HUD, etc...

I'd assume your sound/video card driver are updated? Does it crash in Windowed mode as well? Have you tried with no launch options (if you have any)?

I also tried deleting items_game, it did validate and reacquire that file, but the crash persists.

Reinstalling tf2 is the nuclear option because it would take me 1-2 days to dl it (very shit download)

I also doubt that it's a driver option since there wasn't an update during the night and my tf2 worked fine only a few hours ago :( lol

have you tried a system restore? Restore your computer back a week or two. If that doesn't work, try a few restore points. And when you say "there wasn't an update during the night", are you referring to Windows Update? What type of Graphics card do you have? Radeon, Nvidia?

No I'm referring to tf2, literally nothing has changed in regards to tf2 since I played only a few hours ago lol. My video card isn't even really supported anymore so I doubt that it did anything randomly either lol. I also haven't had any windows updates.

My guess is some file is randomly corrupted but I can't figure out which one - nor can steam apparently lol.

Just do a System Restore. Restore it back a few days ago, at minimum.

I dont think that's a viable option either since I doubt I've ever actually made a restore point lol.

unless you turned system restore off to begin with, the restore points get created automatically. if you did turn it off, you kind of fucked yourself over there didn't ya? Time to reinstall TF2. Find a life for the next few days ;)

Ok I believe I've fixed it - i'll start reapplying stuff.

Step 1. Delete C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Team Fortress 2\tf\download
Step 2. Delete C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Team Fortress 2\tf\downloadlists
Step 3. delete C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Team Fortress 2\tf\materials
Step 4. Delete C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Team Fortress 2\tf\scripts
Step 5. remove all custom cfgs, launch options etc
Step 6. restart computer
Step 7. verify integrity

errors are gone game works as intended

I shy away from system restore because the only time I actually used it was like back in 2001 and it made my problems worse - I take it they've made it not a complete waste of time over the last decade?

lol, so you used it a decade before Windows 7 even came out. Lord help your soul. Yes, it's very useful and actually fixes many issues. It's obviously best to find the root of the problem but at least you'll have system restore as an option if need be.
